UNS – Students from Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held an eco-enzyme workshop in Jatisobo Village. The event took place in Polokarto District, Sukoharjo Regency. It was part of their commitment to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production. The initiative was also part of the Community Service Program (KKN), funded by the Independent Learning Grant (Hibah Pembelajaran Merdeka).

The event occurred on Sunday (4/5/2025). It involved 72 members of the Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) group from RT 2 RW 4 of Jatisobo Village. The UNS student team included ten members. They were Arief Kurnia Pambudi, Arilistya Kurniawan, Alifia Nadiatun Najiiha, Debby Asti Septina, and Eka Tias Ambarwani. Other members were Endyas Miftakhuljannah, Mohammad Nauffal Dzhiyaul Haq, Nurista Ayu Soutul Haqiqi, Yumna Alhay Munajaeti, and Zefanya Widyasari.

The workshop opened with a presentation highlighting the importance of managing organic waste through sustainable and eco-friendly practices. One effective method introduced was eco-enzyme production. This fermented liquid, from fruit and vegetable scraps mixed with brown sugar and water, offers multiple benefits. People can use the resulting liquid as a natural cleaner, organic fertilizer, and a plant pest repellent.

Promoting Household Waste Management

A live demonstration followed, where students guided the participants through each step of the eco-enzyme production process. They explained how to select ingredients, measure the correct ratios, and store the mixture in fermentation containers. The participants responded enthusiastically. They asked questions and actively joined the discussion.

In the next session, the team explained how to apply eco-enzymes in daily life, particularly for home gardening. For example, 30 ml of eco-enzyme diluted in 2 liters of water can serve as a natural fertilizer. This practical knowledge aims to reduce reliance on industrial chemical products and promote the reuse of household waste.

To mark the event’s success, the student team presented a bottle of fully fermented eco-enzyme to Ms. Ika, head of RT 2 RW 4. This symbolic handover served as an example for the community and encouraged them to begin eco-enzyme production at home.

“Thank you for the knowledge you’ve shared. We used to throw away kitchen waste like vegetable scraps and fruit peels. However, the eco-enzyme process gives them new value. I hope the women in our neighborhood can try this at home and benefit from it,” Ms. Ika said.

Community Enthusiasm and Long-Term Impact

This activity is part of the broader UNS KKN Hibah Pembelajaran Merdeka program. It aims to bridge academic knowledge with real community needs. The program uses a scientific and participatory approach. It promotes university research and strengthens local capacities to address environmental challenges.

Furthermore, the initiative supports SDG 12 by promoting sustainable behavior at the grassroots level. The students introduced simple technologies like eco-enzyme production. This has laid the foundation for a long-term shift toward environmentally friendly and sustainable lifestyles. HUMAS UNS

The Chairperson of the Central Java Family Welfare Movement (PKK) Nawal Arafah Yasin, M.Si., was present. The Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., also attended.

The program underscores UNS’s dedication to supporting strategic initiatives led by the Central Java Provincial Government. It focuses on improving community welfare.

Strengthening Community Empowerment

The Central Java Government launched the Kecamatan Berdaya Program to empower communities at the district level. The program targets vulnerable groups, including women, children, persons with disabilities, and creative youth. Its success depends on collaboration between local governments, universities, businesses, and community organizations.

UNS Rector Prof. Hartono highlighted the importance of cross-sector collaboration, which is at the heart of the program. He noted that the initiative aligns with UNS’s strategic values of “Together” and “Active.” This is part of the university’s commitment to the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (Three Pillars of Higher Education).

“This program focuses on improving the welfare of communities, particularly children, women, and persons with disabilities. As it aligns with our values, UNS will fully support this initiative,” Prof. Hartono said.

UNS’s Role in the Program

Prof. Hartono further explained that UNS will contribute to the program through its commitment to education, training, and community service. The university will deploy community service teams through its Institute of Research and Community Service (LPPM). It will also engage students through the Thematic Community Service Program (KKN Tematik).

She also serves as the Chairperson of Women and Child Protection House (RPPA). She stressed the collaborative nature of the program. She emphasized that it brings together resources from various sectors to build a safer, more inclusive, and empowered society.

“The Kecamatan Berdaya program unites the efforts of government institutions, universities, and businesses to empower communities. It focuses on supporting women, children, persons with disabilities, and creative youth. We hope this initiative helps reduce poverty and supports the development of Central Java,” she explained.

Inauguration of Key Initiatives

In addition to launching the program, the event inaugurated the Women and Child Protection House in Jebres. It also introduced the Zilenial Card. These initiatives aim to provide youth with better access to entrepreneurship training, sports facilities, and digital literacy resources.

UNS’s Impact on Community Empowerment

UNS aims to make a significant impact on community empowerment and the protection of vulnerable groups. The Kecamatan Berdaya Program offers a collaborative model for regional empowerment efforts. Other regions could replicate this model to support their communities. The program builds strong partnerships between universities and local governments. It addresses key societal challenges and strengthens the role of higher education in regional development. Various stakeholders support the Kecamatan Berdaya Program in Jebres to make it a model for sustainable, community-based empowerment. The program also reflects UNS’s commitment to applying its Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi in addressing critical community needs.

Prof. Doddy emphasized that the KKN program serves as a platform for students to apply the knowledge they have gained during their studies. He detailed the student distribution: 39 students in Mejayan Sub-District, 40 in Madiun Sub-District, 30 in Jiwan Sub-District, and 11 in Kare Sub-District. He also called on local leaders to guide and supervise the program’s activities in their respective regions.

“On behalf of UNS, I express my deepest gratitude to Madiun Regency for welcoming our students. We truly appreciate the learning opportunities provided across these sub-districts,” Prof. Doddy said.

Interim Regent Tontro Pahlawanto encouraged students to make the most of their KKN experience by learning about community life and exploring the local potential of villages in Madiun, Jiwan, Mejayan, and Kare. He also urged students to actively participate in the Musyawarah Perencanaan Pembangunan (Musrenbang), or Development Planning Discussions, at the village and sub-district levels.

“This is an extraordinary learning opportunity. During the Musrenbang forums, you will directly observe the processes of discussion and development planning with key stakeholders,” he stated.

UNS Rector, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., conveyed a message to the students, highlighting that KKN is a vital implementation of the Tridarma Perguruan Tinggi (Three Pillars of Higher Education), specifically in community service. This program is expected to provide invaluable experiences in character development, leadership, and social skills.

“Through KKN, students are not only expected to apply the knowledge they have gained in class but also to learn from the social and cultural dynamics of the communities they serve,” Prof. Hartono said.

He emphasized the importance of carrying out responsibilities with creativity, innovation, and a sense of accountability. Students were encouraged to build good relationships with local communities, respect their traditions and cultures, and become agents of positive change in their respective areas.

“They will be deployed across seven provinces, from central to eastern Indonesia, carrying programs designed to address the specific needs of the communities,” he added.

KKN is one of the ways that UNS contributes to community service. The program activities can encompass various aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), depending on the types of initiatives carried out. KKN UNS program aims to address social, economic, and environmental challenges in the participating regions, making a tangible contribution to sustainable development.

During the visit, a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was signed between UNS and Pemkab Lombok Utara regarding the implementation of the Tridharma of Higher Education and the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program. The signing took place in Meeting Room 1 of the dr. Prakosa Building at UNS.

The delegation from Pemkab Lombok Utara was led by the Regent, H. Djohan Sjamsu, S.H., and was warmly received by the Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr. M.Sc., along with other university leaders. Prof. Hartono welcomed the guests, expressing his happiness and pride in hosting the North Lombok Regency delegation at the “Pioneer Campus and Fortress of Pancasila.”

North Lombok Regency is already familiar territory for UNS, as we have been sending students for community service (KKN) to several villages there. “Since 2018, UNS has been actively involved in Gumantar Village, Kayangan District, North Lombok Regency, especially during the earthquake’s aftermath, contributing to economic recovery efforts alongside other stakeholders,” Prof. Hartono said.

Prof. Hartono expressed hope that the partnership between UNS and Pemkab Lombok Utara would continue to grow beyond KKN and MBKM initiatives, including opportunities for students to study off-campus. “We also look forward to conducting research and community service projects, intending to make North Lombok Regency an official partner of UNS. We are ready to collaborate in developing human resources in the regency, leveraging UNS’s expertise and resources,” Prof. Hartono said.

UNS also provided invaluable assistance during the recovery efforts following the earthquake,” H. Djohan said.

With the signing of this cooperation agreement, H. Djohan hopes the relationship between UNS and the North Lombok Regency will grow even stronger. He emphasized the enormous potential in North Lombok, from tourism to agricultural products, which could be further developed through collaboration with UNS. “North Lombok has great tourism potential. I hope through this partnership with UNS we can optimize these opportunities for the future development of the region,” he added.

H.
Gawan Village, located in Tanon District, Sragen, is prone to flooding due to its proximity to the Bengawan Solo River. Recognizing this risk, the KKN UNS team initiated the “Disaster Resilient Village” socialization to equip the community with knowledge and skills to handle disasters.

The event was held at Gawan Village Hall and attended by various community representatives, including village officials, local leaders, and representatives from the Sragen Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). The main speaker, Danang from BPBD, delivered a presentation on disaster management, risk mitigation, the importance of preparedness, and actionable steps that residents can take to minimize the impact of flood disasters.

Sutrisna, S.Sos., the Head of Gawan Village, expressed his appreciation to the KKN UNS students for organizing the event. He hoped the establishment of FPRB and the socialization activities would enhance the village’s disaster resilience. “I highly appreciate the initiative of UNS and the KKN students for organizing this event. I hope Gawan Village can become more prepared to face any potential disasters,” he said.

Izabel Kalina, the Chair of the Socialization Committee, stated that the event was just the beginning of a broader program initiated by the KKN students. “I believe that Gawan Village is a safe place, but it’s still essential for us to continue learning and preparing so that if a disaster strikes, the village is resilient and ready to respond,” she told uns.ac.id on Friday (13/9/2024).

During his presentation, Danang emphasized that building a disaster-resilient village starts with individuals and families, and is strengthened by community cooperation. “Preparedness is not just the government’s responsibility, but everyone’s. With the right knowledge and preparation, we can reduce the risk and impact of flood disasters,” Danang said.

The event also included an emergency evacuation drill involving all participants. This simulation demonstrated the steps residents should take in the event of sudden flooding. The community’s enthusiasm was evident in their active participation during the drill and their questions about technical aspects of disaster preparedness.

A significant achievement of the event was the establishment of the Gawan Village FPRB. The forum serves as a coordination platform between residents, the village government, and relevant stakeholders to improve disaster preparedness and implement sustainable mitigation efforts. The forum also aims to ensure that the knowledge and skills gained from the socialization can continue to be applied and developed by the community.

During the formation of FPRB, Gawan residents agreed to appoint representatives from various neighborhood units (RT) to serve on the forum’s management team. The forum will collaborate with BPBD and other relevant parties to implement disaster mitigation plans, such as drainage management, flood-prone area mapping, and routine simulation exercises.

Beatrix Datu, the head of the FPRB formation committee, expressed her hopes that the event would not end with the forum’s establishment but would lead to concrete actions taken by the community to address disaster risks. “We will continue to support the Gawan Village FPRB, and we hope that our efforts will bring sustainable benefits to the village,” she added.

The event concluded with a collective commitment by all residents and FPRB members to actively participate in disaster mitigation efforts. Residents were also given brochures and disaster mitigation guides as references for everyday life.

With this event, Gawan Village is expected not only to become resilient in facing disasters but also to serve as a pioneer in disaster risk reduction in the Tanon District and surrounding areas.

UNS – Students from Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta conducted a socialization event titled “Efforts for Environmental Conservation and Household Waste Management into Compost.” This initiative is part of the Student Community Service Program (KKN) by Group 155, held in Plumpung Village, Plaosan Sub-district, Magetan Regency. The waste management solution aims to raise community awareness about environmental conservation and provides practical household waste management solutions in Plumpung Village.

UNS students carried out a series of socialization activities and demonstrations on how to turn household waste into compost. The program is designed to reduce waste starting from the smallest scale—households. The knowledge gained from this program is expected to lessen the burden on landfills and reduce environmental pollution in the future.

Aligned with the KKN UNS theme, “Education, Assistance, and Community Empowerment,” the program aims to help the community understand the environmental impact of waste and develop skills to turn waste into valuable products like compost. The initiative received a positive response from the residents and the Plumpung Village government, as it contributes to environmental conservation efforts.

The series of socialization programs was held at the Plumpung Village Hall. The event began with opening remarks from the Head of Plumpung Village, Wahyudiarto, followed by a speech from KKN UNS Group 155 coordinator, Wardiman Deva. The session continued with a material presentation and a demonstration of compost production.

“The materials needed for making compost include household organic waste and EM4 solution, which accelerates the decomposition of organic matter,” Deva explained to uns.ac.id on Friday (6/9/2024).

The KKN UNS initiative encourages active community participation in waste management. This effort also strengthens cooperation between residents, the village government, and environmental organizations. The program aims to create positive changes in daily waste management practices by fostering collective awareness and responsibility for environmental cleanliness.

The collaboration between KKN UNS Group 155, the community, and the Plumpung Village government is expected to continue. The community’s limited knowledge of effective composting methods is anticipated to improve following the socialization of this program.

“Turning household waste into compost is a practical solution to the waste problem in Plumpung Village. Through the efforts of KKN UNS Group 155, we hope that the community will take part in implementing composting in their own homes,” Wahyudiarto, Head of Plumpung Village, said.

The program targeted the youth of Giriroto Village, Ngemplak Subdistrict, Boyolali Regency, working alongside the local community to make tangible efforts toward improving well-being.

The KKN program represents one of the pillars of higher education’s Tri Dharma, namely community service. It is also a testament to the success of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) initiative at UNS. The KKN activities carried out by Group 35 took place throughout July-August 2024.

The group comprised UNS students Lutfi Ikhtiar Fauzy, Lintang Nora Andani, Marchelia Nindya Fadhilah, Azrul Laila, Kalvin Alwi, Neha Oktaviani Astuti, Atadila Berliani Daniswara, Tiara Hasna Salsabila, Annisa Dewi Sakuntala, and Renny Indah Setefani. Under the guidance of Prof. Ir. Ari Handono Ramelan, M.Sc. (Hons), Ph.D., as the Field Supervising Lecturer (DPL), Group 35 worked in synergy to address the theme “Smart Village and Education,” striving to gather and disseminate accurate and relevant information.

The digital era has brought significant challenges, particularly for the younger generation, who face risks such as online loans (Pinjol), online gambling (Judol), and sexual violence. These issues require increased awareness and vigilance to ensure self-protection. Based on a problem-mapping exercise, the group found that there was a lack of awareness and understanding among residents about the importance of digital literacy, especially regarding the dangers of Pinjol and Judol. In response, Group 35 organized an awareness session titled “The Dangers of Online Loans, Online Gambling, and Sexual Violence.”

“This activity aims to raise awareness among the village’s youth about the risks and negative impacts of these three critical issues. The event was attended by young men and women from Giriroto Village, who are particularly vulnerable to these digital threats,” Lutfi Ikhtiar Fauzy explained.

Pinjol, which often comes with high interest rates and unethical collection practices, was highlighted as a major concern. Participants were reminded that relying on online loans can not only deplete personal finances but also lead to psychological and social problems. The issue of online gambling also received significant attention, with UNS students stressing that Judol can lead to addiction, resulting in financial loss and personal and social damage. Additionally, the UNS students addressed the ongoing issue of sexual violence, stressing the importance of recognizing the signs and knowing how to protect oneself and report incidents.

The awareness campaign was well-received by the local community. One of the participants, Risnanda, shared that the session opened his eyes to the dangers surrounding online loans, gambling, and sexual violence, helping him better understand the risks and the importance of self-protection.

KKN UNS students hope that through this initiative, the youth of Giriroto Village will become more prudent in resisting the temptations of Pinjol and Judol, and more vigilant and proactive in combating sexual violence within their community. In the future, it is hoped that similar campaigns will continue to build a more informed and protected society, resilient against various social threats.

The primary goal is to stimulate local economic growth by creating new job opportunities. The development is expected to improve the quality of life for residents, build a positive image for the destination, and raise environmental awareness among visitors and the community.

“We hope this tourism development will drive economic growth for the local community and increase environmental awareness among visitors and residents. Achieving these goals will ensure that the project delivers significant long-term benefits to the community and its visitors,” Elma Dwi Puspita, one of the students from UNS KKN Group 333, explained in an interview with uns.ac.id on Monday (2/9/2024).

This business plan was presented on Thursday (8/8/2024) at the Blumbang Village Hall.

“Some of the attractions that our team planned and presented as efforts to develop tourism at Bukit Mitis include a cable car, an 88-meter Ferris wheel, and a hot air balloon, which could potentially be the first and only one in Indonesia, offering breathtaking views of the hills,” Elma added.

With the tourism development initiated by KKN UNS Group 333, Bukit Mitis is expected to become a premier destination for tourists seeking unique experiences such as hiking, family camping, glamping, cable cars, and hot air balloons.
