This inauguration was for the second period of the 2024/2025 academic year. The event took place at the G.P.H. Haryo Mataram Auditorium on Monday (17/2/2025). In addition to the inauguration, the university introduced new students to campus life. This initiative aimed to prepare them for their academic journey.

Overview of the Graduate Student Inauguration

The Vice Rector for Academic Affairs and Research at UNS, Prof. Dr. Fitria Rahmawati, S.Si., M.Si., provided details about the newly admitted students. She shared key information regarding their enrollment. They are spread across 45 Master’s programs, 18 Doctoral programs, and 2 Professional programs.

“The total number of new graduate students for this period is 616. They have successfully completed their registration and fulfilled all academic requirements,” Prof. Fitria stated.

Rector’s Message to New Students

During the ceremony, UNS Rector Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., extended a warm welcome to the students. He also expressed his appreciation for their decision to pursue graduate studies at UNS.

“I warmly welcome all 616 new graduate students to the UNS academic community. We commit to supporting you in your pursuit of intellectual and professional growth,” Prof. Hartono said.

Prof. Hartono emphasized that graduate education goes beyond obtaining academic degrees. It also plays a crucial role in shaping students’ character as intellectuals. He encouraged the new students to cultivate critical thinking, innovation, and responsibility in their academic endeavors.

UNS — The General Lecture held by Master Program in Biology Education Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta discussed the integration of science and art in the learning method. The online lecture was held through the Zoom Cloud Meeting platform on Friday (29/10/2021), inviting Assoc. Prof. Dr. Haniza Hanim binti Mohd Zain from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris Malaysia.

The general lecture was led by Meika Apriyani and Dr. Baskoro Adi Prayitno as moderators and was opened with an opening remark from Prof. Dr. Slamet Subiyantoro, M.Si., Vice-Dean for Academic, Research, and Student Affairs, followed by an opening remark from Dr. Bowo Sugiharto, M.Pd., as the Head of Master Program in Biology Education UNS.

In the general lecture, Prof. Haniza shared her experiences in teaching science using various methods that were rarely applied by other science lecturers. One of the methods applied by Prof. Haniza is a play assignment for her students that is integrated into anatomy and histology materials in the Biology course. Song and Lyrics is another method employed by Prof. Haniza, in which students were asked to create a song based on Biology course materials.

Collaboration between science and arts is proven to create exciting learning methods. The contradictory characteristics between arts and science create harmony in attracting students’ interest to participate in science-related courses and facilitate students’ comprehension. The combination was inspired by Prof. Haniza’s experience as a science student in which arts helped her to comprehend science materials that she thought were difficult. Such integration is also a solution for students’ boredom in learning, especially amid the Covid-19 pandemic that limits people’s mobility.

“With exciting learning situations, students will be happier to participate in the learning process,” Prof. Haniza stated.

Arts assignments are also still possible to complete for students even though they need to be extra creative in conducting distanced collaboration among them. Continuous assessment, through essay, mind mapping, bridge maps, self-learning module, virtual lab, and virtual field work could also be incorporated to reduce students who cheat in examination. Prof. Haniza also gives her students assignments with strict deadlines in the Myguru app as a form of the monitoring process. Prof. Haniza’s explanation could become examples and options to be implemented by other educational practitioners in creating exciting learning programs for their students. Humas UNS

UNS — The Master Program in Management (MM) Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta won the Indonesia Digital Popular Brand Award (IDPBA) 2021 as a MM education institution with the best digital media management in Indonesia. The award was handed online through the IDPBA ceremony on Thursday (28/10/2021).

Retno Tanding Suryandari, S.E., M.E., Ph.D., the Head of MM FEB UNS, explained that there are three assessment criteria in IDPBA: Search Engine Based, Social Media Based, and Websites Based. The Search Engine Based criteria were assessed through brand discussion on the internet pages and the average monthly brand search on the internet. The Social Media Based was assessed through the engagement in Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Lastly, the Website Based criteria assessment was based on the website traffic, website access speed, and mobile user-friendliness. Ten MM programs were selected from these three criteria with early selection criteria of university reviewed in more than 10,000 search engine pages, which UNS was included in the category.

“One of the factors that I think make UNS included in the Best 10 (is because) UNS actively uses its social media besides formal media at internet pages in introducing UNS and its programs. The utilization of social media, such as YouTube, Instagram, Twitter that become an assessment criterion for university or program traffic,” Retno Tanding Suryandari, Ph.D. explained.

She also explained that besides the website, currently MM UNS also utilizes other social media such as YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook to communicate with its stakeholders, prospective students, students, and information seekers. Several contents in MM social media are related to business contents, how to manage a business, and the challenges and solutions that can be taken by decision-makers for problems faced by business management and organization.

The content shared in MM UNS social media is expected to benefit students and other information seekers, such as business managers and other parties. According to Retno Tanding Suryandari, Ph.D., this award is the result of the Team’s hard works, not only the social media managers but also website managers, faculty contributions, and promotion conducted by the university for all programs in UNS. Humas UNS
