UNS — The Plenary Meeting of the Council of Professors from Legal Entity State Universities (MDGB PTNBH) was held at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta from Thursday to Saturday (7-9/11/2024). Four commissions within the MDGB PTNBH developed key recommendations to address national challenges in preparing a superior generation ahead of Indonesia Emas 2045.

The meeting began with a keynote remark by the Director General of Higher Education, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Abdul Haris, M.Sc., who discussed the role of professors in advancing science for national progress. Additionally, Prof. Dr. Nunuk Suryani, M.Pd., Director General of Teachers and Education Personnel (GTK), and Prof. Harkristuti Harkrisnowo, S.H., M.A., Ph.D., Chair of the Council of Professors at Universitas Indonesia (UI), shared insights on ethics and academic culture in developing outstanding human resources from a policy and conceptual standpoint.

The plenary meeting produced several recommendations from the MDGB PTNBH commissions, including the need to strengthen ethics and morality across all PTNBH institutions through guidelines based on Pancasila and local wisdom. One notable recommendation was to eliminate honorary professor titles granted under the current Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Permendikbudristek) Regulation Number 44 of 2024. Additionally, they emphasized the integration of ethics into the curriculum and its implementation in teaching.

“For the past three days, the discussions led to various recommendations formulated by the UNS Council of Professors, attended by 90 professors from 17 PTNBH universities. The strategic issues addressed, particularly those related to creating a superior human resource pool, often overlook the importance of ethics in academic and political spheres. As explained by the Director General of Higher Education, this need must be addressed starting from universities to prepare a young generation that is both ethical and grounded in academic culture,” Prof. Harkristuti conveyed to the media on Friday (8/11/2024).

The UI Council of Professors Chair, Prof. Harkristuti, also highlighted concerns about the recent surge in honorary professor titles, noting many do not meet established criteria. “The title of professor is an academic rank achieved through significant contributions and strict requirements. However, many recent honorary titles are given without clear achievements or contributions,” she remarked.

Prof. Drs. Suranto Tjiptowibisono, M.Sc., Ph.D., Chair of the UNS Council of Professors, noted that obtaining a regular professorial title requires a lengthy career progression, from assistant professor to associate professor, and finally to full professor, with stringent requirements such as publications and teaching hours. “In contrast, honorary professor titles are sometimes granted suddenly without the same rigorous process,” he pointed out.

Prof. Dr. M. Baiquni, M.A., Chair of the MDGB PTNBH for 2024-2025 and Chair of the Council of Professors at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), emphasized the main focus of the MDGB PTNBH is to advance national education. Collaboration with policymakers is crucial given this constitutional duty.

“We aim to foster educational excellence across the nation. Collaborations are planned with the government, from the President to ministers, as this is a shared constitutional responsibility. The Council of Professors intends to provide policy briefs and implement concrete actions based on fundamental education to address existing problems. A critical step in advancing national education is revisiting field realities,” Prof. Baiquni explained.

Prof. Dr. Andi Pangerang Moenta, S.H., M.H., DFM., Chair of the Council of Professors at Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas), highlighted the importance of maintaining the Council of Professors in university governance. He argued that eliminating this body would significantly impact the academic and moral governance structure.

“One of our recommendations is to maintain the existence of the Professors’ Council, which has long played a crucial role in upholding academic and moral values. Therefore, we urge the Professors’ Council to be retained within PTNBH. Eliminating it would have significant consequences regarding moral values, ethics, and strategic thinking needed to address national issues. The dissolution of the Senate of Professors and similar bodies would effectively silence professors from voicing their opinions institutionally,” the Chairman of the Professors’ Council at Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas) added.

The discussions held during the MDGB meeting align with the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), which focuses on Quality Education to enhance future generations’ competencies. It also corresponds with the seventeenth SDG, Partnership for the Goals, emphasizing that achieving quality education requires effective collaboration among various stakeholders. This highlights the importance of multi-party cooperation in realizing educational improvements and sustainable development. HUMAS UNS

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta hosted the prestigious meeting of the Professors Council (Majelis Dewan Guru Besar, or MDGB) of Legal Entity State Universities (PTNBH). The event was officially opened by UNS Rector, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., on Thursday (7/11/2024) evening at the Ki Hadjar Dewantara Tower Ballroom, UNS.

The meeting “The Role of Professors in Preparing a Superior Generation for Indonesia Emas 2045” gathered representatives from 17 of 24 Professors Councils (Dewan Profesor, or DP) of PTNBH universities across Indonesia. Chairman of the UNS Professors Council, Prof. Drs. Suranto, M.Sc., Ph.D., extended a warm welcome to the distinguished delegates and expressed gratitude for their participation. He highlighted the meeting as a valuable opportunity to discuss key issues, including the newly implemented Ministerial Regulation Number 44 of 2024 on Lecturer Profession, Career, and Income (Permendikbudristek).

Prof. Suranto noted a significant change brought by the regulation, where the appointment of professors is now under the authority of universities. “This is our responsibility. We bear a great duty in nurturing future professors. I urge all of us to reflect on whether we are prepared for morality, ethics, and propriety. Let us contribute our best efforts to advance education in Indonesia, particularly concerning our role in developing professors,” Prof. Suranto said.

The Chairman of the MDGB PTNBH, Prof. Dr. Andi Pengerang Moenta, S.H., M.H., DFM., highlighted critical topics that deserved focus during this meeting. He emphasized the essential role of the Professors Council as a moral and intellectual authority within universities, shaping and maintaining academic quality, scientific integrity, and institutional character. Prof. Andi stressed that the council’s responsibilities extend beyond upholding academic standards; they also involve driving scientific innovation to address contemporary challenges. He regarded Ministerial Regulation Number 44 of 2024 as a transformative policy for university governance, particularly in the areas of academic policy and organizational structure.

The MDGB PTNBH meeting was officially inaugurated by Prof. Hartono, who, in his opening address, underscored the strategic importance of this gathering. He emphasized that it serves not merely as a platform for exchanging ideas but as a critical moment to reflect on the central role of professors in navigating global challenges and the evolving dynamics of the times. He stated that the theme of the meeting is both timely and essential. “As we aim to realize a golden generation for Indonesia by 2045 and beyond, we must focus on several key aspects, including enhancing educational and research quality, fostering character and leadership development, and contributing to national policy,” Prof. Hartono noted.

The three-day event, running until Saturday (9/11/2024), includes a series of activities. On the second day, the professors will hold leadership meetings and commission sessions, with each commission presenting its findings in a plenary session. The event will also feature a cultural performance, the Wayang Orang play titled “Gatutkaca Winisudha,” at the G.P.H. Haryo Mataram Auditorium, UNS, on Friday evening, November 8. The final day will conclude with a visit to the Manusia Purba Sangiran Museum in Sragen, Central Java, offering an opportunity for the delegates to explore local heritage and history.
