The general lecture was held to understand the current condition of the television industry in facing the disruption of industry 4.0 and media disruption. Agus Mulyadi, Director of Program and Development Metro TV, was invited as a speaker at the event.

The Head of Communication Science Program FISIP UNS, Sri Hastjarjo, Ph.D., mentioned in his remark that the general lecture is the first event as the implementation of the collaboration agreement between UNS and Metro TV. “There are many activities in the agreement, including expert lecture. So, our fellows from Metro TV will provide experts or professionals as speakers in providing lectures or discussion with faculty members, especially in television broadcast,” he explained.

Representing the faculty, the Vice-Dean for Academic, Research, and Student Affairs, Prahastiwi Utari, Ph.D., greatly appreciated the general lecture held by the Communication Science Program. The Vice-Dean hoped that the general lecture could inspire students in the Communication Science Program and Diploma Program (D-3) in Applied Communication to observe the current state of the television business in Indonesia. “Because this is a part of our dreams that need to be achieved,” she added.

In his material presentation, Agus Mulyadi stated that before discussing the strategies for television to survive in the current competition, it is vital to understand how television differs from the old television industry. The most striking difference lies in its broadcasting technology. Television used to broadcast using analog technology, which shifted to digital broadcast recently. “This year (Indonesia) has started the transition and stopped analog broadcast,” he explained.

Discussing the current competition in the television business, Agus explained that television competes with other television companies and other cross platforms of media. In eleven cities, the internet is the most used media after television due to the increase in smartphone usage. Among the strategies implemented by television to compete in the current environment are developing monetization policies, building viewers’ interest, and understanding viewers’ needs. Humas UNS

The collaboration between Metro TV and UNS will synergize three activities, education, research, and community services. The collaboration also covers the implementation of Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM), instructed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemdikbduristek).

The Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, Business, and Information Affairs UNS, Prof. Dr. rer.nat. Sajidan, M.Si., who represented the Rector of UNS, attended the signing ceremony directly. Prof. Sajidan stated that this collaboration is a means to align the academic, business, and industrial worlds. Prof. Sajidan also thanked Metro TV for the collaboration and the opportunity for an internship for Communication Science Program faculty members.

“In the digitalization era, we need to continue our self-development. In this context, the MBKM program has brought campuses closer to the business and industrial world that is expected to equip university students and faculty members to accelerate the education 4.0,” Prof. Sajidan stated.

The collaboration that will also provide an opportunity for faculty members’ internships is essential to improve faculty members’ capability in various fields and follow the current development. The Director of Program and Development of PT. Media Televisi Indonesia, Agus Mulyadi, who also attended the signing ceremony, mentioned that his station wants to strengthen the relationship with UNS as a means of information on communication science transfer between UNS and Metro TV.

“We have a long partnership with UNS, and we hope the collaboration agreed this year could contribute and improve the synergy. Metro TV is fully aware that in the media era, we could not stand alone; we could not sit still with our resources. We need to build synergy and collaborate with many parties to help each other,” Agus stated.

Besides the partnership in Higher Education Tri Dharma and MBKM, this partnership will also focus on broadcasting, socialization, and publication through digital and other media. The agreement will be effective for three years with the Communication Science Program UNS as the collaboration target. Humas UNS
