This international conference invited three main speakers, namely Indriya L. Sukomono, Ph.D., a Bahasa Indonesia Study lecturer from Yale University, New Heaven, USA; Yacinta Kurniasih, Ph.D. (cand)., another Indonesian Study lecturer from Monash University, Melbourne, Australia; and Dr. Uswatun Hasanah, M.Pd., the Head of Education and Culture Office for Central Java Province, Indonesia.

In her remark, the Head of the Doctoral Program in English Language Education Study FKIP UNS, Prof. Dr. Andayani, M.Pd., hopes for this conference to discuss urgent topics in the socio-humanities field.

“This international conference initiated by the Doctoral Program Alumni Association for the English Language Education (PBI) Study FKIP UNS goes by the name of 2nd ICHSS, where the first ICHSS was hosted in 2021. In total, there were 272 participants attending this conference, which consisted of lecturers from various universities. The planned output of this conference is a reputable international EAI-EUDL (European Alliance for Innovation-European Union Digital Library) indexed proceeding. This agenda is also expected to generate recent ideas in the Socio-humanities field,” explains Prof. Andayani.

The first material was presented by L. Sukmono, Ph.D., entitled, ‘Rise and Fall of Indonesian Language Learning for Foreign Speakers (BIPA),’ stating, “The Indonesian Language Learning for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) in Yale University, the USA has been going for a long time. Normally, BIPA students take Bahasa Indonesia classes in their first to the third semester. BIPA learning is usually offered for the undergraduate degree. However, Bahasa Indonesia is facing a great challenge in the USA region Because students tend to choose more popular foreign languages such as Spanish, French, Chinese, Korean, and Arabic,” he explained.

The next material was delivered by Yacinta Kurniasih, Ph.D. (cand)., from Monash University. In her session, she discussed material entitled ‘Globalizing Bahasa Indonesia? The World Needs Bahasa Indonesia! A Mission from Merdeka Belajar.’

“Bahasa Indonesia holds the most crucial part in Merdeka Belajar Program through the implementation of the government’s program in the ‘Merdeka’ curriculum. Globalizing Bahasa Indonesia can be done by using this language in international political forums, the establishment of Indonesian association (for research, networking, and participation), research on BIPA, Bahasa Indonesia application in product promotion, self-confidence improvement in using Bahasa Indonesia, and partnership improvement through language diplomacy,” explains Yucinta Kurniasih, Ph.D. (cand).

The following speaker, Dr. Uswatun Hasanah, M.Pd., explains about ‘Crucial Role of Bahasa Indonesia in 22nd Series of Merdeka Belajar.’

“Bahasa Indonesia literacy is one of the components in the higher education selection process. This literacy concept refers to individual competency in using all their resource in solving apparent problems, thus, literacy is not limited to reading and writing proficiency. There are three characteristics of a highly literate person, namely, adaptive livelihood, capability to make a positive contribution, and applicable solution,” explains Dr. Uswatun Hasanah.

The keynote material presentation was followed by a question and answer session at the end of the session. After the plenary session, participants were invited to parallel sessions at separate Zoom breakout rooms. Humas UNS

The Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, expressed his gratitude to Monash University Indonesia for paving the way for a partnership through the international webinar. “I hope that there will be further collaboration between UNS and Monash University both in terms of education, research, and other activities that are useful for the development of each university,” he said on Thursday (2/6/2022).

Prof. Andrew MacIntyre, President of Monash University Indonesia, expressed his pleasure in establishing a partnership with UNS in this webinar, which was conducted virtually through Zoom Cloud Meetings. In the material presentation, Prof. Andrew explained several things related to the internationalization process of higher education in Indonesia and Australia. The professor in the international relations field also said that one of the aspects needed to encourage the internationalization of higher education is an appropriate mindset that must be instilled in lecturers’ and students’ minds. “The mindset that needs to be instilled in higher education academic support staff and students is that they must have humility and flexibility. There are many other aspects, but I think these two had represented all of them,” he explained.

Signing Partnership Agreement

At this event, UNS and Monash University Indonesia also signed a partnership agreement. The signatory ceremony was carried out by the President of Monash University Indonesia, Prof. Andrew MacIntyre, and the Dean of FSRD UNS, Dr. Rahmanu Widayat, M.Sn. This partnership is expected to strengthen the collaboration activities that will be carried out between UNS and Monash University Indonesia. This partnership was appreciated by Prof. Andrew. “Thank you for the opportunity provided through this webinar. We are always exploring the possibility for various other activities that can be done between Monash and UNS,” he added.

Other than Prof. Andrew, Professor Diego Ramirez-Lovering, a professor in Monash Art, Design, and Architecture, also attended the event representing Monash University. Prof. Diego also expressed his views related to the themes discussed in this webinar. Humas UNS

The international webinar discussed the “Indonesian Higher Education Readiness for Facing Inclusive Education.” PSD UNS collaborated with the Intellectual and Professional Association (I&P) Indonesia in the Netherlands to assess Indonesia’s readiness in administering inclusive education for its people.

The Chairman of PSD UNS, Prof. Dr. Munawir Yusuf, stated that he was enthusiastic in administering the webinar. Prof. Munawir hoped that he could learn various views in administering inclusive education in other countries.

“This webinar is not only participated by Indonesian people. Therefore, I hope we could share knowledge and information on inclusive education implementation in each country,” Prof. Munawir stated. He added that five hundred and sixty-three people applied to participate in the webinar from Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, Belanda, and Belgium.

The Director of I&P Indonesia in the Netherlands, Rosalyn Siburian, also shared her delight in the webinar. She stated that her part is ready to connect Indonesia and the Netherlands. “Let us try to facilitate people with special needs. This is a challenge for all of us. Hopefully, this webinar could enlighten our steps forward in developing special education in our country,” she stated.

The webinar was opened by the Chairwoman of LPPM UNS, Prof. Okid Parama Astirin, who appreciated the webinar. The Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, also attended the webinar as the keynote speaker. “In achieving disability-friendly inclusive campus, UNS is committed to creating a safe, comfortable, and interesting campus for everybody,” he emphasized in his presentation.

After Prof. Jamal, four invited speakers from four countries shared their materials. Prof. Dr. Ir. Nuhfil Hanani AR., M.S. (Rector of Universitas Brawijaya, Malang), Dr. Mulyoto Pangestu, Ph.D. (Monash University), Prof. Dr. Mohd Hanafi bin Mohd Yasin (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia), and Prof. Dr. Bayu Jayawardhana (University of Groningen, the Netherlands).
