The competition was held by the Soil Research Institute (Balittanah) and the Center for Literacy and Agricultural Land and Resources Development (BBSDLP) Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) to celebrate World Soil Day. The Vlog Competition took a theme of “Climate Change to Soil Quality.”

To uns.ac.id, Farhan Erdaswin explained that the vlog was inspired by the climate change issues that affect soil quality in Tawangmangu, Karanganyar District. Climate change that increases the average earth temperature leads to increased precipitation, sea surface temperature, and climate-related incidents, and extreme weather. The team observed declining quality of the soil marked by the degraded soil in the region.

The increased precipitation in the region also leads to landslides and the increase in land-use changes from perennial to annual plants. “What we observed then recorded in the vlog as an information media on the impact of climate change on soil quality, especially in Tawangmangu,” Farhan Erdaswin stated on Wednesday (29/12/2021).

In the vlog, the team explained soil quality criteria, including its capacity in maintaining plant productivity, maintaining water availability, and supporting human activities. Good soil quality will support its function as the media for plant growth and manage and distribute water currents while supporting the environmental function.

Soil degradation due to climate change is triggered by numerous factors such as declining soil physical condition and soil biological process due to erosion, compression, fracture, nutrient washing, acidification, salinity, and decreasing organic matters and biodiversity of soil biomes. The vlog also shared the sites of landslides in Tawangmangu.

The team stated that they were delighted with the result and to bring pride to their program at the national level. They also hoped that their vlog could improve people’s awareness to take care of the soil quality.

“The message we want to share in the video is that Tawamangu soil quality has degraded due to the climate change, so that we need to protect the soil from further degradation,” Farhan Erdaswin stated. Humas UNS

Salman said that in his work, he discussed the relationship between Islam and science because people often contradicted both and stated that religion inhibits science development and vice versa; the development of science contradicts religion, while that is not correct. Islam is a universal value system and perfects that never contradicts science development, science, and technology.

“Both in Islam is a means to achieve development and benefit the mankind,” Salman stated on Saturday (18/12/2021).

He added that scientific culture is upheld in Islam with many Al Quran verses that encourage humans to study. He also explained that Islamic civilization in Abbasiyah time was once the mecca for global science development.

“Although many said it was because the leaders were liberal and progressive, but according to my references, at the time, there was no discourse between Islam and science. Curiosity based on faith brought the Muslim community to achieve their peak of intellectualism as a believer,” he added.

In the competition participated by students from various universities, Salman said that he was delighted to win the 1^st position in his first experience participating in a microblog competition. He explained that initially, he was interested in participating in a poster competition but later decided to participate in a microblog competition instead.

Through this achievement, the final semester student hoped that it could encourage him to participate in other similar competitions. He also hoped that the Muslim community could learn from Islamic glory in the Abbasiyah Caliphate era with its advanced science. Humas UNS

Khadijah Team from UNS has three students from Diploma Program (D-3) in Agricultural Product Technology (THP) Batch 2019. The team members are Faridah Halimatus Sa’diyah, Diana Nur Miftakh, and Girindra Ayu Damastuti. The team proposed a business idea titled “Nutry Gummy: Utilizing Milkfish Bones in Nutry Gummy as an Innovation of Jelly Candy with Local Taste”. The team selected this product development based on the gelatin needs in Indonesia that are still imported from other countries and cause high prices in the market. The Indonesian community, in general, is also questioning the halalness of the imported gelatin product as the main material in jelly candy.

Faridah Halimatus Sa’diyah, a member of Khadijah Team from Gresik, observed that her region has high Milkfish production and sub-optimum milkfish bones processing. “While milkfish has high protein and has a potential to be processed into gelatin,” Faridah explained to uns.ac.id on Monday (25/10/2021).

From the existing community issues, Khadijah Team introduced the milkfish bones innovation process into gelatin and used it as a composition of jelly candy. They also added local taste, kunyit asem. In the competition that was joined by around 247 participants from various universities in Indonesia, including ITB, Unair, Unesa, ITS, and UGM, the team successfully went through the Business Lean Canvas selection, business design selection, and the grand final.

“We are grateful and delighted from 247 teams in the competition from all universities in Indonesia, we could win 2^nd place,” Faridah stated.

Khadijah Team hoped that there would be an implementation from their business design that optimized the processing of milkfish bones as side-products. The gelatin production from milkfish bones is also expected to grow and reduce import dependency.

NBPC 2021 is a competition to recover the Indonesian economy after the Covid-19 pandemic. The competition that had “Start Your Business With Your Creative and Innovative Ideas In The New Normal Era” as a theme had a culinary sub-theme selected by Khadijah Team and two other sub-themes, Creative Industry, Services, and Technology. Alvianita explained that she was interested in participating in the competition because of the competition theme in education, and she wanted to hone her writing skill.

“(I) wanted to participate in the competition because (I am) interested with the theme in education, and (to) hone (my) writing skill,” Alvianita said to uns.ac.id team.

The competition was held fully online, and Alvianita was required to complete administrative requirements besides her work that were submitted through the Google Form platform. In the competition, Alvianita submitted a study on distanced learning at elementary school and junior high school to offer a fun learning model and problem-based learning as solutions for the discussed issue.

“The idea was developed from a KPAI survey that indicated distanced learning issues in 54 cities in 20 provinces in Indonesia,” Alvianita explained. Her inspirations also came from her teachers in educational courses, such as Drs. Djoko Subandriyo, M.Pd., Dr. Drs. Sugiyanto, M.Si., M.Si., and Singgih Prihadi, M.Pd. Concluding the interview, Alvianita mentioned that she hoped that her ideas could benefit the community and herself if the committee published her work. Humas UNS

They are Geri Amora Putra, Muhammad Hasby, and Misbahuddin Abdulkarim, Tajmulka Siraj Mumtaz from the class of 2017, who won the first place. Meanwhile, Panji Diwya Ugranindito, and Alvis Prima Fernando won as the third winner, leaving Addarda Raffanurahil Aufa from the class of 2016 as a finalist.

For this architecture competition, Geri Amora Putra and the team creates a design for G30SPKI Memorial Park: Manifestation of Sukitman’s Memories, The Survivor of G30SPKI, which completed within a month. “This establishment aims to remind the public regarding Sukitman’s dark experiences during the G30SPKI by presenting a spatial experience that can interfere with a person physically and spiritually. This object also aims to reconnect the historical context with the current time, thus creating a connected line to the future. Hence, our predecessors’ long and tiring struggle can always be remembered and will never fade,” he explains in an interview on Monday (7/6/2021).

When announced as the first winner through the WEX Instagram @wex_ugm last May, Geri admits that he is happy with the achievement. “I am very happy because this is our first time to win as the first winner. This competition is undoubtedly added to our insight and honed our skills in architectural design. Obviously, it will be useful for our future career endeavors,” he reveals.

Similar statements were made by Panji, who receives third place in the same competition. “As the third winner, we are happy because this is our first championship, especially for reaching the second stage of assessment, which needs numerous preparations. Hopefully, there will be more UNS Architecture students who will diligently participate in this type of competition and other activities to always develop themselves,” Panji states.

We wish the achievement of the three teams in the WEX UGM 2021 will bring more encouragement to UNS students to achieve more. Humas UNS
