UNS – The Association of Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals (ICMI) Surakarta Branch for the 2024–2029 period organized a national seminar on Tuesday (21/1/2025) at the Ballroom of UNS Tower.

The event began with a discussion on the work programs of ICMI Surakarta’s various sectors, including education, culture, national character development, collaboration, communication and digital transformation, as well as science and technology integrated with faith and morality.

For this early-year seminar, ICMI adopted the theme “Indonesia’s Socio-Economic Outlook and the Role of Muslims in Achieving Indonesia Emas 2045.” The seminar also served as the “Kick-Off Event” for ICMI Surakarta’s activities during the 2024–2029 period. This event was supported by Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI).

Emphasizing the Role of Muslims in Indonesia Emas 2045

On this occasion, Prof. Irwan Trinugroho, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., Chair of ICMI Surakarta, emphasized the importance of ICMI and the Muslim community’s role in achieving Indonesia Emas 2045. As the Vice Rector for Planning, Cooperation, Internationalization, and Information at UNS, he urged ICMI members to engage directly with society.

“Many seminars discuss Indonesia’s socio-economic conditions, but few address the role of Muslims in this context. ICMI Surakarta’s thoughts, ideas, and contributions in various fields need to be documented and disseminated through online media so the public and stakeholders can access them. Beyond ideas, ICMI Surakarta must actively engage with the community to ensure its benefits are felt by society,” Prof. Irwan said.

Insights from Seminar Speakers

Ibrahim Fatwa Wijaya, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., Director of the Directorate of Planning, Cooperation, Internationalization, and Reputation at UNS, moderated the seminar. The event featured three prominent speakers: Prof. Dr. H. Mudofir, S.Ag., M.Pd., a Professor at UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta; Prof. Dr. Muhammad Da’i, M.Si., Apt., Vice Rector for Finance, Assets, and General Administration at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS); and Tastaftiyan Risfandy, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., Vice Dean for Student Affairs and Alumni at FEB UNS.

Prof. Mudofir shared insights on the role of Muslims in environmental conservation, highlighting that the environmental crisis reflects a spiritual crisis. He stressed the need for Islamic institutions to focus on environmental preservation.
“It is crucial for scholars to develop thematic interpretations of environmental issues. This is necessary because many Muslims do not consider environmental conservation and its degradation as significant aspects that support worship and the afterlife. Scholars should also develop sermons addressing environmental preservation, the dangers of environmental damage, and sustainability. Therefore, we need environmental activists who can disseminate the role of religion in environmental conservation,” Prof. Mudofir said.

Prof. Da’i addressed leadership and the competitive edge of Muslims in science and technology, which still lag behind.
“Muslims should change their mindset, recognizing that worship extends beyond praying, reciting, and fasting. They should view activities like working, innovating, and studying, which occupy much of their time, as acts of worship as well. Additionally, to address the low competitiveness of human resources within the community, Muslims should empower those struggling to find employment,” Prof. Da’i explained.

Meanwhile, Risfandy, Ph.D., focused on Indonesia’s Islamic economics and poverty alleviation. “To address poverty and inequality among Indonesians, stakeholders should implement free education, provide free nutritious meal programs, and introduce initiatives in banking and mosques. These efforts should begin with families, serving as the foundation for educating their members,” Risfandy stated.

He sees campuses as vital partners for BWI in promoting waqf literacy, noting that universities like UNS have the potential to act as literacy partners, promotional partners, and collaborators in this area.

UNS Rector Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., also discussed waqf’s potential within higher education, explaining that the national seminar serves as a platform for exploring productive waqf’s role in supporting national development. “Some universities in Indonesia are already involved in cash waqf initiatives through endowment funds invested in sukuk, generating returns that support scholarships and other educational programs. UNS is committed to expanding the use of cash waqf to advance education in higher institutions,” he stated.

Prof. Hartono noted that waqf contributions from the academic community could come from lecturers, staff, students, alumni, and the general public. UNS has also established a Subdirectorate of Endowment Funds, which is currently finalizing regulations for endowment management aimed at supporting education, research, and community service initiatives.

In the core seminar session, Dr. Imam Saptono presented “The Role of Waqf in National Development.” He discussed various innovations aimed at building a national waqf ecosystem, including waqf-based housing. Presidential Regulation Number 13 of 2021 allows waqf land to be used for long-term housing through a 60-year Building Ownership Certificate (SKBG) for apartment units on waqf land, with options for extension. The government has also introduced sukuk specifically for cash waqf investments, which can fund projects like housing. Additionally, Financial Services Authority Regulation Number 18 of 2023 facilitates sustainable shariah bonds and sukuk linked to waqf, a category of sustainable sukuk. There are also various Sharia Bank products related to waqf, as well as opportunities for banks to serve as nadzir (waqf fund managers) under Law Number 4 of 2023 on the Financial Sector Development and Strengthening (P2SK) Act.

The second presentation, delivered by Agus Laksono, was titled “The Role of SBSN in Infrastructure Project Financing, National Investment, and Productive Waqf in Indonesia.” The Cash Waqf Linked Sukuk (CWLS) has become an instrument for financing government-led projects or social investment programs and productive waqf. This platform enables the public to engage in cash waqf and social investments more easily and securely. The presence of CWLS supports the development of the Sharia financial market, particularly the cash waqf industry. This initiative is part of ongoing innovation in the fields of finance, social investment, and productive waqf in Indonesia.

CWLS also encourages diversification within the Shariah finance business sector through the optimized role of Islamic Financial Institutions Serving Cash Waqf (LKS PWU). This program supports the growth of the national waqf ecosystem, with a focus on strengthening governance and institutional frameworks for waqf in Indonesia. CWLS is also part of innovative-creative financing efforts, advancing quasi-sovereign instruments and expanding the base of domestic investors.

Ir. Eko Nugroho Isbandiharso, M.Si., Head of Dispartan KPP Surakarta City, delivered the keynote remarks, emphasizing the importance of the younger generation’s role in developing agricultural technology in Indonesia. He pointed out that few agriculture graduates are interested in becoming farmers, largely due to the lack of promising career prospects in the agricultural sector. He stressed the need for improvements in national agricultural infrastructure to attract foreign investors and enhance human resources.

The first session was delivered by Dr. rer. Agr. Evi Irawan, S.P., M.Sc., a lecturer from the Agribusiness Program of the Faculty of Agriculture UNS. He discussed Agriculture 5.0, which offers solutions to meet Indonesia’s growing food needs. “The key features of Agriculture 5.0 are automation and robotics, such as the use of drones and precision agriculture. More agritech startups are needed to support the use of advanced agricultural technology,” Dr. Evi explained.

The second session was led by Khanif Irsyad Fahmi, S.P., CEO of Gemati Farm and former President of the FP Student Executive Board (BEM) in 2021. Khanif elaborated on strategies to increase farmer regeneration, highlighting the future potential of agriculture compared to other sectors. “The opportunities in agriculture are far greater in the future than in other sectors, and young people should be more interested. Strategies for creating new farmers include easy access to capital, more training for young farmers, improving farmer welfare, and promoting young farmer communities,” Khanif stated.

At the end of the event, seminar participants engaged in a question-and-answer session discussing the implementation of agricultural innovation and technology. This discussion aimed to broaden students’ knowledge and promote wider adoption of innovations among the younger generation. With its relevant theme and expert speakers, the FAST 2024 National Seminar became an important forum for discussing the challenges and opportunities in Indonesia’s agricultural sector in the era of Industry 4.0. We expect the seminar’s outcomes to inspire young people and FP students to take concrete steps to enhance innovation and the relevance of agriculture in the future.

UNS — Environmental Research Center (PPLH), the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, in collaboration with PT ThorCon Power Indonesia, held a national seminar on Nuclear Power as a Solution for Environmentally Friendly and Sustainable Energy for a Prosperous and Low-Carbon Indonesia 2050. The national seminar was held offline in UNS Inn and online through Zoom Cloud Meeting on Wednesday (16/3/2022).

The Chairman of the committee, Dr. Suryanto, S.E., M.Si., stated that the event concluded public dissemination of the result of academic studies and public acceptance of nuclear power development in Indonesia. The national seminar was opened by the Chairman of the National Research and Innovation Board (BRIN), Dr. Laksana Tri Handoko.

“Hopefully, this national seminar could provide new encouragement for the development of nuclear-based new and renewable energy as a vital support in achieving advanced Indonesian economy in the future,” Dr. Handoko stated.

The opening was followed by a remark from the Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, S.H., M.Hum., who explained that there are three challenges faced by Indonesia in achieving environmentally friendly energy. The first challenge is the method to provide energy using a complex method to achieve energy independence; secondly, how to generate sustainable, environmentally friendly energy while maintaining the commitment to the Paris Agreement. “And the third, how Indonesia come up with a unique energy solution according to its geographical condition considering the available natural and human resources. These challenges need to be solved to make Indonesia on par with other countries and at the forefront of energy management,” Prof. Jamal explained. Prof. Jamal also appreciated the smooth collaboration with PT ThorCon Power Indonesia and hoped that the collaboration could benefit the nation.

The following remark was delivered by the Chief Operating Officer (COO) PT ThorCon Power Indonesia, Bob S. Effendi, who shared that the one-year collaboration has resulted in academic studies that reveal new facts on nuclear energy. He added that the study was highly comprehensive because it also discussed the economic, economic growth, and environmental issues surrounding the topic. The study also proved that nuclear energy is a safe, practical, environmentally friendly energy that provides a solution to replace the fossil energy. Bob S. Effendi also hoped that the collaboration could continue further and the dissemination of nuclear energy potential could eliminate the government’s hesitation in adopting nuclear power. “Because nuclear is a practical and low-cost solution for an energy transition that does not burden the community,” he added.

The speakers invited to the seminar are the Deputy for Human Resources, Science and Technology BRIN, Edy Giri Rachman Putra, Ph.D., Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, Business, and Information Affairs UNS, Prof. Dr. rer.nat. Sajidan, M.Si., COO PT ThorCon Power Indonesia, Bob S. Effendi, and Sociology Program faculty member from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) UNS, Dr. Drajat Tri Kartono, M.Si. Humas UNS

UNS — Faculty of Agriculture (FP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a National Seminar on Indonesia Agricultural Outlook 2022. The seminar was held offline in G.P.H. Haryo Mataram Auditorium UNS on Tuesday (21/12/2021) and is available virtually through the Zoom platform and Faculty of Agriculture UNS YouTube channel, and Solopos TV.

The Chief of Managing Committee, Dr. Agung Wibowo, S.P., M.Si., stated that this seminar is important to provide a general description for the community, especially agricultural activistss, on the future of agricultural strategy. The seminar is also expected to bring new strategies in the agricultural sector after the Covid-19 pandemic.

“History has proved that the agricultural sector has a rich contribution and become the savior of the state economy. The government’s role as a policymaker is vital in advancing agricultural development,” Dr. Agung stated.

The national seminar was attended by the Coordinating Minister for Economy Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Airlangga Hartarto, and the Minister for Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia, Syahrul Yasin Limpo. As a keynote speaker, Airlangga Hartarto explained that the agricultural sector was resilient in facing the Covid-19 pandemic, marked by Indonesia’s 107.18 Agricultural Exchange (Nilai Tukar Pertanian-NTP) in November 2021, 3% food inflation, and a 4.3% increase in agricultural sector export from January to November 2021.

“Agricultural sector always becomes a sector that could survive as the economic pillar in various crises in 1998, 2008, and today’s Covid-19 crisis,” he stated.

The government targeted 3.6% to 4% agricultural sector growth in 2022 through various strategic programs in the food and agribusiness sectors. These programs include stabilizing the price and supply of foods, developing horticulture region for export, developing closed-loop horticulture partnership, revitalizing local people palm oil plantation, developing integrated farming system, developing seaweed industry, achieving labor-intensive agriculture and fishery, improving subsidized fertilizer through a membership card, controlling land usage switch, and developing farmer-fishermen corporation.

These programs will be aligned with agricultural development strategies that support food resilience and improve sustainably competitiveness implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture. The Minister of Agriculture, Syahrul Yasin Limpo, explained that the five-development strategy consists of increasing production capacity, diversifying local food sources, strengthening food reserves and logistics systems, developing modern farming, and three times exports movement.

Government and University Collaboration

Syahrul Yasin Limpo added that collaboration between the government and the university is vital in succeeding in the explained strategies. Academic views are needed as a suggestion for agricultural development in the future. “This needs collective efforts,” he stated.

The third speaker, Prof. Dr. Ir. Bustanul Arifin, M.Sc. from the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF), highlighted the challenges faced by Indonesia, including climate change and agricultural disparity. He also hoped that the university could assist the government in solving the challenges through various means, such as modern agricultural technology.

“The point for university is the possibility of technology that could adapt the weather or other technology to adapt the disparity because there is a wide disparity in Indonesia, this kind of technology will be invaluable for the agricultural sector,” he added.

The National Seminar was concluded with the launching of Kisah Inspiratif 50 Alumni Fakultas Pertanian UNS (Inspirative Stories of 50 Faculty of Agriculture UNS Alumni). Humas UNS

UNS — Student Association (UKM) or Qur’an Study Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a series of National Seminar on Quranic Research on Saturday – Sunday, 25—26 September 2021. The seminar was held online and offline from UNS Inn to discuss the “Multidisciplinary Research on Revealing God’s Omnipotence Through Al Asmaa’ Al Husna: A Qur’anic Based Study Approach”.

Prof. Ahmad Yunus, M.Si., as Vice-Rector for Academic and Student Affairs UNS, mentioned in his opening remark that this seminar was initiated in April 2021 as a part of Al-Qur’an research conducted by UNS students under the supervision of Dr. Sutanto, S.Si., DEA., a faculty member of Mathematics Program FMIPA UNS and the Director of Academic Reputation and Student Affairs UNS.

“We studied the role of Al-Qur’an in managing community life in the society and the nation. How Islamic teachings are implemented in society and national life. Hopefully, these research findings could contribute to the field of science,” Prof. Yunus stated.

Experts and public figures were invited to this event, both from Indonesia and abroad, including Syaikh Adil Al Bahri Al Yamani, Expert in Tafsir and Al-Qur’an from Yemen, Dr. Sutanto, S.Si., DEA., Dr. (Cand) Kholili Hasib, M.Ud. (Director of Institut Pemikiran dan Peradaban Islam – Islamic Thoughts and Civilization Institute), and Dr. Arifuddin, Lc., M.A (Arabic Linguistic Expert UNS).

Syaikh Adil Al Bahri Al Yamani stated that Al-Qur’an has a high linguistic value in terms of linguistic beauty, sentences compositions, and at the same time contain scientific and literary values. He added that Al-Qur’an is an Islamic treaty that brings humanitarian messages and eternal miraculous values as long as it is studied and explored by the next generations. “When the scientific knowledge in Al-Quran was explored, it contains great messages. It is ahead of its time—answering questions from the following ages (after it is introduced). The more advanced our researches, the closer its results to Al-Qur’an,” the Syaikh explained.

Dr. Arifuddin, Lc., M.A., as an Arabic Linguistic expert from UNS, shared the components that accompanied a miracle, such as a great occurrence, introduced by a prophet, contain challenges to those questions the prophet, and challenges that cannot be defeated by those questioning the prophet. The challenge in the form of linguistic value was because the Arabic people were known for their linguistic excellence, linguistic beauty, poetic, and rhymes. “Al-Qur’an that was bestowed to the prophet challenges the old poets who question Al-Qur’an and Muhammad to create poetry as beautiful with language as advanced as Al-Qur’an. Nobody could answer to this challenge,” Dr. Arifuddin explained. He added that as a miracle, the challenge is still alive today because it is immaterial and not physical.

Various results of Al-Qur’an researches were also shared in the seminar. Dr. Sutanto, S.Si., DEA, as the Supervisor and Person in Charge of Quranic Research UNS, shared his study on Index of Coincidence for Arabic Language (Cryptanalysis of Vigenere Cipher Algorithm) that had been presented in Istanbul, Turkey. The seminar received great responses from participants that joined through the Zoom Cloud Meetings and Al-Qur’an Study UNS YouTube channel. Humas UNS
