Remarks from the Vice Rector for Student and Alumni Affairs

Meanwhile, UNS Vice Rector for Student and Alumni Affairs, Prof. Ir. Dody Ariawan, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., stated that the 2025/2026 PKKMB carries the theme “Generasi Bersinergi” (Synergized Generation). This program emphasizes instilling core values such as religiosity, discipline, honesty, and adaptability, which serve as a foundation for students to face challenges in their academic journey.

“For five days, new students will be introduced to UNS systems, academic culture, and the spirit of achievement. This orientation aims to help them transition into academic individuals with integrity who are ready to contribute to realizing the UNS Dreamteam,” said Prof. Dody.

The PKKMB 2025 program is systematically designed per the set schedule, beginning with university-level activities, followed by faculty and study program activities, and concluding with the Student Organization (Ormawa) Expo. “We will ensure that every stage is carried out according to the applicable regulations,” he added.

Instilling Values and Identity

Students are also introduced to national values under the theme of National Insight, delivered among others by Prof. Dr. Zudan Arif Fakrulloh, S.H., M.H., who gave a lecture on “Nationhood, Statehood, and Strengthening Awareness of National Defense.” Additionally, students were introduced to UNS culture through the “UNS Identity” session, conducted simultaneously across all PKKMB locations. Efforts to strengthen student character and achievements while remaining true to their identity were also highlighted in the “Winner Character” session, presented by UNS alumnus Ir. Gunawan Sulistyo, M.M.

Welcome Speech from the Rector of UNS

The Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr. M.Si., welcomed all new students. “We should be proud that this year, UNS has become home to more than 10,000 students from 33 provinces across Indonesia, from Sabang to Merauke. UNS also admitted 38 students with special needs spread across 12 faculties, in line with its commitment as an Inclusive Campus,” said Prof. Hartono.

Prof. Hartono further emphasized that PKKMB is a vital program that prepares students to become more mature and independent learners while accelerating their adaptation to a new environment. Through this program, students will gain essential provisions for success in higher education, both academically and non-academically.

The Transformative Impact of PKKMB 2025

This year, UNS invited prominent speakers who provided knowledge and inspiration. Distinguished UNS alums were present to show that quality, hard work, and integrity can lead to career success while contributing positively to the nation and society.

This spirit of contributing aligns with the “Impactful Campus” program of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology. Universities are expected to produce graduates, publications, or innovations and deliver tangible benefits for society, the nation, and the state. UNS remains committed to implementing the university’s tridharma to meet these challenges.

UNS is committed to providing a conducive, supportive learning environment to maximize student potential. Various academic facilities, student activities, support services such as the Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Violence, the UNS Medical Center, and student counseling services are available. The program, which runs for three days from Tuesday (20/8/2024) to Thursday (22/8/2024), marks the initial introduction of the university’s core principles, known as Tridharma Perguruan Tinggi, to the new students.

The 2024 new UNS students are being introduced to various topics through a student-centered learning (SCL) approach, making the sessions engaging and interactive. The PKKMB UNS provides opportunities for students to participate in discussions, simulations, and other methods tailored to their needs, utilizing creative media and the latest technology. The event is conducted simultaneously across all UNS campuses in a hybrid format, with the main venue being the G.P.H. Haryo Mataram UNS Auditorium.

Prof. Dr. Fitria Rahmawati, S.Si., M.Si., Vice Rector for Academic Affairs and Research at UNS, reported that over 10.714 new students are participating in the PKKMB UNS 2024. These students come from 14 faculties and vocational schools (SV) within UNS, having successfully completed registration and on-desk processes. Initially, 12.610 students were accepted into undergraduate and diploma programs through various selection processes, including the Achievement-Based National Selection (SNBP), Test-Based National Selection (SNBT), and UNS Independent Selection (SM).

UNS also welcomed 30 new students under the Higher Education Affirmation Scholarship (ADik) program from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek). Overall, the newly admitted students represent 30 provinces across Indonesia. In addition, UNS has accepted 12 new international students through the UNS Scholarship program, hailing from five countries: Myanmar, Nigeria, Sudan, Timor-Leste, and Turkmenistan.

“The SPMB committee reported that 10.671 new UNS students in 2024 have completed registration and on-desk processes within 14 faculties and vocational schools. All newly admitted students have met the academic administrative requirements,” Prof. Fitria stated.

The three-day PKKMB UNS follows a staged structure. The first day focuses on introducing the university’s campus environment. The second day shifts to an introduction at the faculty level, while the third and final day is dedicated to the study program level.

UNS Rector, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., presented student ID cards to representatives from the 14 faculties and vocational schools, as well as to international student representatives. This ceremony officially inducted the new undergraduate and diploma students for the 2024/2025 academic year. In his remarks, Prof. Hartono emphasized that the university experience is a crucial period for the personal and academic development of new students transitioning from secondary education. He highlighted that higher education is an environment that will shape them into future leaders capable of contributing at both national and global levels.

The university period is also a time for self-discovery. Prof. Hartono encouraged the new students to engage in various Student Activity Units (UKM) at UNS, which are valuable for honing a wide range of soft skills.

“We have prepared the infrastructure, facilities, and human resources to support the educational process across cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains,” Prof. Hartono said.

He also invited the new students to participate in the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program, which offers opportunities to experience learning outside the campus. In this program, students can take courses outside their primary field of study.

PKKMB UNS 2024 also aims to raise awareness of the importance of understanding globalization and the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) and Society 5.0. These eras require students to be literate in data, technology, and humanity, as well as to be prepared with the competencies needed in the 21st century. Therefore, students are expected to become agents of change, drivers of progress, and pioneers in providing solutions to the challenges facing the nation.

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret Postgraduate School (UNS) Surakarta organized a Campus Life Introduction Program for New Students (PKKMB), Thursday (15/9/2022). The event was conducted in the G.P.H. Haryo Mataram UNS Auditorium Building and is addressed for the First intake of Master and Doctoral programs students. Hundreds of new UNS Postgraduate students from various provinces and countries attended this event. Also attending the event was the Vice-Rector for Academic and Student Affairs UNS, Prof. Ahmad Yunus, and the Dean of the UNS Graduate School, Prof. Sutarno.

In his remark, Prof. Ahmad Yunus advised new students to maintain academic quality in accordance with the curriculum provided by UNS. “There are regulations and qualifications for Masters and Doctoral students that must be fulfilled to graduate with international quality. Therefore, despite studying at UNS, our quality is equal to international standards,” he explained.

Prof. Ahmad Yunus added that as a graduation requirement, students must make international publications. “Students since their first semester have been directed to determine the research topic for thesis or dissertation. Hence, it has to be prepared really because a Master study is short. If you’re not ready, you’ll be surprised since all of a sudden it’s already the third semester,” he added.

After the welcome remark from the Vice-Rector of Academic and Student Affairs at UNS, the PKKMB activities were followed by the presentation of materials by the Dean of the UNS Graduate School, Prof. Sutarno. He said that the lectures at the postgraduate level should be enjoyed while also focusing on completing the examination requirements.

UNS — The Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Mendikbud Ristek), Nadiem Makarim, delivers a message for the new students of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta to maximize the advantage of Kampus Merdeka Program. He delivers his message during a remark on Introduction to Campus Life for New Students (PKKMB) UNS on Friday (13/8/2021).

Nadiem states that become a university student is not the same as a class advancement in high school/elementary school. Becoming a university student means having broader independence and freedom in choosing the future. Therefore, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemdikbud Ristek) provides special rights for all university students to study outside their study program for 3 (three) semesters.

“University students in Indonesia can take the benefit from the available Kampus Merdeka Programs. The program includes industrial or global social organization internship, independent study, community service, entrepreneurship, regional or international student exchange, village community service, or teaching at Elementary School or Middle School through ‘Kampus Mengajar’ program,” Nadiem explains. All those programs are designed to give the students opportunities under diverse interests to get practical experiences, which are not available in the textbook. “Experience will provide the means for students to achieve their future dreams. We are committed to providing not only freedom but also the assure their safety in accomplishing their dreams,” he added.

The advantage of this Kampus Merdeka program is, in fact, that students do not have to sacrifice their study period. This condition is possible because the Kemdikbud Ristek has required higher education institutions in Indonesia to allow for a credit transfer of up to 20 points of semester credits (SKS) for each Kampus Merdeka Program. Moreover, through the collaboration and partnership established with the Educational Fund Management Institution (LPDP), students can get pocket money during their participation in the Kampus Merdeka Program. Additionally, the Kemdikbud Ristek also provides various degree and non-degree scholarships for active students in Indonesia, such as Superior Scholarship (Beasiswa Unggulan), available for new students in their first year.

“Our commitment to providing freedom within the higher education institutions will not yield without support and participation from all of you. Use your study period to understand yourself, building the road toward your dreams, and contributes to the nation. I believe that freedom is the breath of the young generation, students, and the nation’s future generation. Let’s keep on moving together to achieve Merdeka Belajar,” Nadiem concluded. Humas UNS

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta started its Campus Life Introduction for New Students (PKKMB) program on Friday (13/8/2021). Quoted from the Guidelines of PKKMB 2021 Directorate General of Higher Education (Dikti) Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek), PKKMB is a means for university executive boards to introduce and prepare new students in the transition into mature and independent university students, and to accelerate the adaptation process in the new environment and equip them with needed materials for their success in higher education study.

An adaptation is vital for university new students due to the different education and teaching system between high school and university, besides the environment, facilities, academic system, and regulations. A psychologist from the Faculty of Medical Science (FK) UNS, Fadjri Kirana Anggarani, S.Psi., M.A., also emphasized the importance of PKKMB program. “PKKMB is needed so that students are not surprised when entering a new environment. Its main objective is to help the student adapt to their new environment,” Fadjri Kirana Anggarani, S.Psi., M.A., explained on Thursday (12/8/2021).

To uns.ac.id, Fadjri Kirana Anggarani, S.Psi., M.A., stated that good adaptation is inseparable from psychological factors such as resilience and perseverance and external factors such as the quality of PKKMB. Therefore, the university executive board and the committee should collaborate and support the good adaptation in new students. Successful PKKMB will positively affect new students and other stakeholders, and online PKKMB is an innovation taken to ensure that students learn new knowledge and information in their new university.

Psychological Impact of Online PKKMB

Fadjri Kirana Anggarani, S.Psi., M.A., explained that online PKKMB could bring diverse impacts, including fatigue for participants and committee due to long eye contact with electronic devices. Seeing one’s reflection in the camera also leads to anxiety because people might be too focused on how they look on the screen. “This is (eye contact with one’s reflection) creates specific fatigue because (the person) keeps thinking about it. It causes a dramatic effect,” she stated.

New Students Engagement in PKKMB

Fadjri Kirana Anggarani, S.Psi., M.A., explained the negative impact of fatigue that might affect student’s engagement during PKKMB, which related to three things: enthusiasm, perseverance, and reconciliation. Enthusiasm is the student’s interest to participate in involved in the event. Thus, fatigue needs to be minimized to ensure participant’s enthusiasm. Perseverance is related to the willingness to do their best. Reconciliation is a cognitive process that might occur in new students when they realize the difference in online PKKMB. Leave their home comfort for PKKMB is an example of reconciliation. These factors have a long term effect on student’s sense of belonging.

“The long-term effect if (they are) not enthusiastic, not perseverant, not serious in completing their assignments, and no reconciliation is the absence of the sense that they belong in that group. That’s the long-term effect, sense of belonging,” Fadjri Kirana Anggarani, S.Psi., M.A., explained.

Preventing Negative Effect of Fatigue

Fadjri Kirana Anggarani, S.Psi., M.A., explained that the key to preventing fatigue lies in the committee’s hands, who have complete control over the events. Reducing screen time, diversifying events, and time management are the factors that need to be considered. Engagement could be built through small team activities, assigning seniors to assist new students who could help new students adapt to the new setting.

“We cannot build new relations with high engagement in a large group. It won’t be easy. It is easier if they are in a small group. It will be easier to build engagement,” Fadjri Kirana Anggarani, S.Psi., M.A., concluded. Humas UNS
