Inclusive History Learning Through Audio

Kibas was specifically designed to present historical narratives in audio format. It allows visually impaired individuals to access and enjoy history education. Carrying the theme “History Speaks for All,” the event featured storytelling sessions. It introduced local Surakarta figures such as Brigadier General Ignatius Slamet Riyadi and Duke Mangkunegoro VII.

Nur Fatah Abidin, S.Pd., M.Pd., a History Education lecturer at UNS, led the interactive discussions that followed the storytelling session. Prof. Dr. Leo Agung, M.Pd., and supervising lecturer Dr. Sutiyah, M.Pd., M.Hum. also attended the event.

Raka Kumara Jati, a PPG History student and chair of the organizing committee, explained that the event aimed to promote equitable access to history learning. He emphasized that visually impaired individuals should have the opportunity to gain historical insight. They should also have access to appreciation through formats tailored to their needs.

“Through this program, we learned how to create an inclusive event. We also realized the value of making a difference through small actions. We also wanted to show that people can enjoy history not only through text but also through sound,” Raka stated. “We hope to raise awareness that history education should be accessible to everyone.”

To increase engagement, the event included a bingo quiz. The response from participants exceeded expectations. The visually impaired attendees actively asked critical questions and contributed significantly to the discussions.

Community Engagement and Lasting Impact

Indah Darmastuti, the founder of Difalitera, praised the initiative. “This event was not only a platform for learning history but also a valuable moment of connection for our community. We hope to see more inclusive activities like this in the future, covering a wider range of themes,” she said.

Kibas is part of a leadership project by PPG UNS History students. As part of the project, the students are also producing historical podcasts and will upload them to Difalitera.org. This effort has successfully promoted inclusivity while enhancing historical literacy among the visually impaired.

Hope and Sustainability

Through this initiative, the PPG History student group hopes to inspire the academic community to continue supporting inclusive education. “We want to emphasize that our friends with disabilities are equally capable of engaging in academic discussions. They can also enjoy history learning,” Raka added.

This project has made a meaningful impact with strong collaboration and effective management. It has influenced not only the Difalitera community but also society at large. The Head of PPG Study Program FKIP UNS, Dr. A.G. Tamrin, M.Pd., M.Sc., in his report stated that FKIP UNS graduated 759 In-Service PPG students in category I scheme positions, 1,060 students category II scheme, and 84 students from Ex PLPG.

The graduation and the Teacher’s Professional Oathtaking became the momentum for the de jure validation of new teachers. This was proved by the awarding of educator certificates for PPG UNS students. The percentage of In-Service PPG student’s graduation in UNS is also in the top 5 nationally.

“We need to deliver that the percentage of In-Service PPG UNS graduates ranks in the top 5 on a national scale. In-Service PPG Category I presentation is 83%, Category II presentation is 90%, and Ex PLPG is 28%. This is a proud achievement for UNS,” Dr. Tamrin said.

The activity continued with the reading of the Rector’s Decree (SK) regarding Determination of Graduation of In-Service PPG Students Batch 2022 and the oathtaking of  teaching profession by the Dean of FKIP UNS, Dr. Mardiyana, M.Sc. UNS PPG Students were then inaugurated and released by the Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs UNS, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ahmad Yunus, M.S.

In his remarks, Prof. Yunus congratulated and succeeded the graduates of In-Service PPG Students Batch 2022. Representing the UNS Leaders, he hoped that these new teachers could follow and implement the information and technology transformation era in learning.

“Herewith this graduation, you legally have a certificate as an educator with competence as a professional teacher and in accordance with the educational standards set by the government. Entering the era of information and technology transformation, we hope that teachers can follow its developments and implement them in learning,” Prof. Yunus said.

The PPG Director of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbudristek), Temu Ismail, S.Pd., M.Sc., also attended and gave a scientific oration. He said that UNS was very helpful in completing the improvement of teacher competence.

“Universitas Sebelas Maret has been very helpful in completing the improvement of teacher competence through teacher certification with various models, through direct portfolio giving, PLPG, and now it is teacher professional education,” Temu Ismail said in his oration.

Eighty-two PPG UNS students participated in the ceremony; 71 students graduated. The Head of PPG FKIP UNS, Dr. A.G. Tamrin, M.Pd., M.Si., stated that the students had completed all courses in the program, and those who graduated have completed the national requirements. “Congratulation to all of you,” Dr. Tamrin stated.

Vice-Rector for Academic and Student Affairs UNS, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ahmad Yunus, M.S., also attended the event and congratulated the graduates. “As the executive board of Universitas Sebelas Maret, I congratulate all PPG Pre-Office Students who graduated (today). After completing this education, from today, you have a certificate of teaching competencies which legally aligns with the education standard determined by the government,” Prof. Yunus stated.

The ceremony was also attended by the Chairman of Pokja PPG Directorate-General of Teacher and Teaching Staff (Dirjen GTK) Kemdikbudristek RI, Dr. Elvira, M.Si., who stated that the graduates are professional educators who have noble duties to achieve the national education’s objectives.

The ceremony was opened with the recitation of the Rector Decree on the graduation of PPG Pre-Office Scheme students 2020/2021, followed by an oath-taking ceremony led by the Dean of FKIP UNS, Dr. Mardiyana, M.Si.

Fajar Budi Hardono, S.Pd., as a representative of graduates, shared his gratitude to all parties who have provided facilities and support during their education. “Thank you for your patience in supervising us. Hopefully, our knowledge could benefit (others),” he stated. Humas UNS
