<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong><a href="https://uns.ac.id/en">UNS</a></strong> — Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, Business, and Information Affairs (WR IV) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Prof. Dr.rer. nat. Sajidan, M.Si., delivered the result of an academic manuscript on nuclear power as a solution to environmentally-friendly and sustainable energy solution. The study was the result of a collaboration between the Environmental Research Center (PPLH) Institute for Research and Community Services (LPPM) UNS and <a href="https://thorconpower.com/indonesia/">PT ThorCon Power Indonesia</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“This presentation is a form of socialization and publication because the information contained in the academic manuscript is needed for the public,” Prof. Sajidan mentioned as a speaker in the national seminar on Nuclear as Environmentally-Friendly and Sustainable Energy Solution to Achieve Prosperity and Low Carbon Indonesia by 2050 in UNS Inn, Wednesday (16/3/2022).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As mentioned by Prof. Sajidan the academic manuscript supports the development of planned nuclear power allowing nuclear power plants to be accepted and well managed. Prof. Sajidan considered nuclear power as a solution to build an environmentally friendly electric source that could benefit the Indonesian people while mitigating climate change.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Nuclear as environmentally-friendly electric power is greatly needed to achieve welfare in 2050, as a replacement for coals as primary energy and transitional energy, to achieve climate change target in realizing free-carbon emission, and as a solution for environmentally-friendly and sustainable energy source,” Prof. Sajidan explained.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Therefore, a nuclear power plant is needed to generate environmentally friendly energy that benefitting Indonesians. <strong>Humas UNS</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong><a href="https://uns.ac.id/en">UNS</a></strong> — In order to enliven the <a href="https://uns.ac.id/id/dies-natalis-46-uns">46th Anniversary</a> of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, 12 UNS Professors planted rare trees at the <a href="https://pplh.lppm.uns.ac.id/">LPPM UNS Environmental Research Center</a> (PPLH) complex Thursday (10/3/2022). The event was opened with a welcome remark from the Chairman of the UNS Board of Professors, Prof. Drs. Suranto Tjiptowibisono, M.Sc., Ph.D. In his greeting, he advised that the tree that had been planted should be taken care of afterward. “Please take care of the planted tree. If the tree thrives, then your knowledge also thrives. Hopefully, what we do can color the biodiversity that exists in UNS. This activity also supports the green campus program at UNS,” explained Prof. Suranto.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The event was followed by a welcome remark from Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, SH, M.Hum., as the Rector of UNS. In his remark, Prof. Jamal said that rare trees planted must be beneficial to all parties, similarly to the presence of a Professor in UNS. “That rare tree has to be beneficial to everyone. Likewise, with the existence of a Professor in UNS, which I hope so, because the Professor is a person with rare quality, thus, they must be taken care of,” said Prof. Jamal.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Further, Prof. Jamal hopes that this rare tree planting by the Professor will not only acts as a monument. “I hope that the planting of this big tree will not only be used as a ceremonial sign. We hope this will be one of the developing factors for UNS in the <a href="https://greenmetric.ui.ac.id/">UI Green Matric</a> parameter, which focuses on environment development-based policies. I am sure that tree planting is not only for a show-off but is really maintained,” hoped Prof. Jamal.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On this occasion, each Professor planted a different type of tree. Prof. Dr. Budi Kristiawan, S.T., M.T., from the Faculty of Engineering (FT), planted a type of Sawo Manilo tree. Prof. Dr. Fitria Rahmawati, S.Si., M.Si., from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), had the opportunity to plant a Duwet Putih tree. Prof. Sutrisno Hadi Purnomo, S.Pt., M.Si., Ph.D., from the Faculty of Agriculture (FP), planted mangosteen trees. Prof. Dr. Ir. Mohammad Harisuddin, M.Si., from FP, planted canary trees. Prof. Dr. Triyanto, SH, M.Hum., planted a Breadfruit tree. Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Agus Supriyanto, S.Si., M.Si. from FMIPA planted a Sawo Susu tree. Prof. Agung Tri Wijayanto, S.T., M.Eng., Ph.D., from FT planted a type of Walisongo tree. Prof. Dr. Ir. Eddy Tri Haryanto, M.P., from FP, planted a type of Sawo Kecik tree. Prof. Dr. Sayekti Wahyuningsih, S.Si., M.Si., from FMIPA planted a type of Sawo Manilo tree. Three other professors, namely Prof. Irwan Trinugroho, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., from the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), planted a type of Sawo Kecik tree, Prof. Dr. Prabang Setyono, S.Si., M.Si., from FMIPA planted a type of sala tree, and Prof. Nuryani S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D., from FMIPA planted a type of Dondong tree.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the professors involved, Prof. Dr. Prabang Setyono, S.Si., M.Si., expressed his impression after planting his Sala-type tree. “It is clear that the philosophy should be deep-rooted into us. We’re being held accountable. Adopting a tree is like adopting a child, so we cannot just leave but supervise, nurture, and monitor. We have to take care of it until the tree can be independent and can grow rapidly. Thus it is not stopped here, but there is continuity,” explained Prof. Prabang.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He also hopes that this rare tree planting can motivate UNS Professors to produce sustainable work and can provide benefits for everyone. “I hope it can motivate us so that when we work, we must be sustainable and can provide fruit to everyone,” hoped Prof. Prabang. <strong>Humas UNS</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong><a href="https://uns.ac.id/en/">UNS</a></strong> &#8212; The Center for Environmental Research <a href="https://pplh.lppm.uns.ac.id/">(PPLH)</a>, Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, assists turmeric farmers for the Suroloyo Farmer Group I, Bandar Village, Pacitan Regency, East Java. Through this Community Assistance activity in 2021, the turmeric farmers in Bandar are expected to gain an additional skill to sell turmeric in various forms, not only in wet form. The produced turmeric can be processed into various high-value products, such as essential oils.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Suroloyo Bandar Farmer Group I, Pacitan, aims to downstream herbal medicine plants (<em>Empon-empon</em>), especially turmeric, through steam distillation and selling the produced oil to industry. “So far, the turmeric harvest from farmers is directly sold at low prices to middlemen. Therefore, efforts are needed to increase turmeric economic value,” explained Fea Prihapsara, M.Sc., as the head of the community service activity, Monday (31/1/2022).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This program was funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology <a href="https://www.kemdikbud.go.id/">(Kemdikbudristek)</a> through a Community Service Grant under the Regional Featured Product Development Program (PPPUD) in 2021. The funds were invested in production equipment to support the turmeric essential oils process.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The head of the Suroloyo Farmers Group I, Agus Pramono, said that the turmeric harvested by the farmers would be refined using a distillation machine with fuel from machine lubricant oil waste. “The distillation process took around 7-8 hours using a 200 kg boiler, which will produce a refined product of around 0.1-0.15%. In this essential oil refining, no waste is produced. Wet turmeric can be processed into 3 (three) products, namely essential oil, hydrosol, and grade B turmeric powder,” explained Agus.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Turmeric essential oil (Turmeric oil) has many health benefits, such as overcoming depression, anxiety, arthritis, joint pain, relieving colds and coughs, boosting the immune system, making skin smooth, and soothing digestive disorders. Turmeric oil can also be used as aromatherapy, massage oil, traditional medicine, and cosmetics.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Meanwhile, hydrosols are often referred to as hydrolases, <em>florasols</em>, or distillate water, which are part of essential oils components suspended in distilled water. “The average essential oil composition in the hydrosol is about 0.02%. Hydrosol can help to hydrate and brighten skin, as well as aromatherapy. Apart from being used in traditional medicine and cosmetics, hydrosol can also be used as a diffuser for room freshener,” added Fea.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fea further states that grade B turmeric powder is used in the mix of animal feed or Antibiotic Growth Promoters (AGP) for broiler chickens, poultry, fish, cattle, goats, and many others. Additionally, cattle feed mixed with turmeric powder as a substitute for AGP is also highly beneficial for livestock in maintaining egg production stability for poultry.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Meanwhile, Agus added that for every 200 kg of wet turmeric, which can be sold at Rp. 1,200-1,500/kg can produce about 200-250 ml of essential oil, 50 liters of hydrosol, and 20 kg of dry turmeric powder. The essential oil price is estimated at Rp. 250,000/100 ml, while the hydrosol is estimated at Rp. 5000/liter, while dry powder is expected to be sold at Rp. 10,000/kg.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Actually, processing turmeric brings more benefits than being sold in wet form. Moreover, we will disseminate this turmeric processing activity to other farmers to help them in increasing turmeric added value,” concluded Agus. <strong>Humas UNS</strong></p>
