Prof. Adi stated that limited face-to-face class session is urgent to be held considering the adverse social impact of the pandemic, including the learning loss that could pose greater risks in the long term. “The Covid-19 pandemic increases the risk of dropout because children are forced to work to help their families amid the Covid-19 pandemic. (There is) also, the risk of reduced learning outcomes due to the learning loss, and the risk of violence against children, external risk, and their mental health,” Prof. Adi stated.

According to the Ministry of Education, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek), 3,391 elementary school students from seven districts/municipalities in four provinces demonstrated a significant learning loss that is equal to five to six months of learning experiences. The slowing down of the new cases are therefore welcomed with the new regulation that requires certain regions to hold a limited face-to-face meeting. “(However,) the regulation needs thorough observation and cautions in order to implement it according to plans without creating new clusters,” he added.

The regulation also aligns with Indonesia’s plan to reduce the pandemic level into endemic. Prof. Adi stated that the implementation of a limited face-to-face session could be successful when health protocols, 3T surveillance, vaccination, and hospital readiness improvement are put in place. The leaders, from local government, university, to teachers, also need to provide examples of implementing health protocols.

“Providing appropriate learning facilities and infrastructure, health protocol supporting facilities in each faculty and classroom, healthy lifestyle in the campus, supervision, and evaluation of health protocols in the canteens, building mask-using culture, and building self-awareness among the academic members on the potential of infections,” Prof. Adi added.

Mendikbudristek has also stated that the success of PTM depends largely on students’ commitments to obey the health protocols.

“Hopefully, the four Minister Decree on face-to-face meeting could allow UNS to hold conditional and gradual face-to-face learning,” Prof. Adi concluded. Humas UNS

This report was shared by the Rector of UNS, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho, in the lunch break meeting with journalists in RM Pecel Madiun dan Dawet Ayu Laris Manis on Tuesday  (19/10/2021). Prof. Jamal stated that UNS’s success in preventing its students from getting infected with SARS-CoV-2 is the effectiveness of conditional and gradual principles emphasized by UNS far before opening PTM.

The conditional principle means that students participating in the PTM must be vaccinated against Covid-19 at least the first shop, live in the Solo region, have a permit from parents, and do not have comorbidity or congenital disease. The gradual principle means that UNS limits the capacity of the classroom to 30% of its normal capacity.

“Because UNS students from Solo and surrounding regions are mostly have been vaccinated against Covid-19 with two doses. And we also use the hybrid learning method, so there are (students) learning from home and in the classroom,” Prof. Jamal explained.

To the fellow journalist, the Rector stated that currently, UNS had opened the opportunity for last year’s students to have an undergraduate thesis, master thesis, and dissertation defense offline. But Prof. Jamal reminded that the offline defense should be held gradually because he does not want a large number of students on the campus to minimize the risk of the Covid-19 cluster.

Increasing Student Quota for PTM

On occasion, Prof. Jamal also shared that once the Restriction for Community Activities (PPKM) level of Surakarta is lowered from level 3 to 2 or from level 2 to 1, UNS will consider increasing the quota for students who are allowed to attend PTM. Because since the reopening of PTM on Monday (6/9/2021), UNS only allows 30% of students to attend class in the classroom.

“And we also limit in one day only two courses taught,” Prof. Jamal added.

This means that students who do not meet the criteria to attend PTM and live outside Solo are still attending class online.

“PPKM level 3 with 30%. Then for PPKM, level 2 (the quota) could increase. If to level 1, the participants can be increased again. And this is what we are considered,” Prof. Jamal said. Humas UNS

The hybrid learning simulation only invited several students into the classroom, while other students participated online. The students are in their first semester and participated in the Introduction to Macroeconomics delivered by Prof. Izza Mafruhah.

“Students looked high spirited and enthusiastic in participating in the hybrid learning for two hours, both those in the classroom and those from home,” Prof. Izza Mafruhah said.

After delivering the materials on Introduction to Macroeconomics, she stated that the students who participated in the simulation are from Solo and the surrounding regions and have been vaccinated against Covid-19. Prof. Izza Mafruhah stated that the hybrid learning simulated by FEB UNS brings a positive impact because she could explain the material that is usually hard to explain through zoom better and easier.

“This (hybrid learning) has a plus; teachers could explain in detail, especially for courses with computation like the one I teach, if using Zoom Cloud Meeting, it is still quite difficult,” she said.

Further, she said that the equipment and technical readiness need special attention during the hybrid learning process. Prof. Izza Mafruhah wanted that the material heard by students who attended the offline session is the same and as clear as those received by students joining through the online platform. “Similarly, the class discussion could run smoothly,” Prof. Izza Mafruhah added.

Andreansyah Saputra, a student who participated in the hybrid learning simulation, stated that this method is excellent to be implemented because students could understand the materials better.

“As students, we are comfortable participating in the learning process while maintaining the campus and classroom health protocols,” Andreansyah Saputra said.

The hybrid learning simulation conducted in FEB UNS is a quick step to welcome the offline learning (PTM) held by UNS. The PTM implementation is confirmed by the Rector of UNS, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho, after receiving permission from the Surakarta Major, Gibran Rakabuming Raka.
