“Currently, UNS has advantages that other universities do not possess. We are situated between two cultural centers, Kasunanan Surakarta and Kadipaten Mangkunegaran. This is a unique strength we can offer to the outside world,” Prof. Suranto stated.

This cultural advantage is one of the key strengths of UNS. The discussion involved UNS’s professors and speakers who addressed the topic “PTNBH Image Towards Global Competitive Excellence.” The UNS Council of Professors, through Commission Three, aims to demonstrate how the PTNBH status opens opportunities for UNS to excel globally.

The Acting Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs UNS, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ahmad Yunus, M.S., while opening the event, outlined the various targets UNS is pursuing after attaining PTNBH status. The PTNBH image drives the academic community to achieve higher competencies. International collaborations to develop UNS into a world-class university will enhance its global academic reputation.

Efforts to enhance UNS’s academic reputation globally are supported by various stakeholders. Students, as a key component of the academic community, contribute through international study programs such as the UNS Global Challenge, the Indonesian International Student Mobility Award (IISMA), and others. Additionally, faculty members contribute through collaborative research, journal publications, and more.

Global excellence will attract more parties to collaborate with UNS. An example is the presence of the Confucius Institute at UNS, which serves as a bridge for cultural exchange, as well as technological and innovation collaborations. Moreover, global excellence will increase the interest of international students to studying at UNS.

“A global academic reputation will also create a positive image for external parties who wish to collaborate and for prospective international students to continue their studies at UNS,” Prof. Yunus said.

Two speakers were featured in the Focus Group Discussion of the UNS Professors Council. They were the Chair of Commission III of the UNS Professors Council and Chair of the PUI Javanologi, Prof. Sahid Teguh Widodo, M.Hum., Ph.D., and the Chair of the Academic Senate of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Universitas Brawijaya (UB) Malang, Prof. Sukir Maryanto, S.Si., M.Si. The discussion was moderated by Prof. Dr. Joko Triyono, S.T., M.T.

Many topics were covered by the two speakers. Prof. Sahid focused on culture as UNS’s advantage, highlighting aspects of global competitive excellence. These aspects include industry involvement, commitment to sustainability, human resources, infrastructure, and student empowerment.

In his opening remark, Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, S.H, M.Hum., stated that UNS received the autonomous university status (PTBNH) on 6 October 2020. The Rector also stated that the university was grateful to be appointed as an autonomous university at a relatively young age. “(Today) I invited Dr. KH. Abdul Wahid Maktub or Gus Wahid to provide direction and strategy on how UNS as PTNBH could become WCU,” Prof. Jamal explained.

In his explanation, Gus Wahid shared his admiration for UNS for achieving PTNBH status in its age. In his speech, he compared UNS action to driving faster without giving signs. “There must be something different that UNS could grow into university with new status, PTNBH,” Gus Wahid stated.

He added that UNS needs a future-oriented vision and culture that could be offered to the global community. “Thus, massive communication and collaboration are needed,” Gus Wahid stated.

To achieve that end, collaboration is needed, and intellectual excellence is not sufficient. The university needs spiritual excellence. Gus Wahid reminded that UNS should be able to maintain achievements and develop its potential better. “I am sure that UNS is not only for Indonesia, but UNS is also for Southeast Asia and the world,” he added.

Prof. Jamal Wiwoho welcomed all invited guests who attended the webinar offline and online. In his remark, Prof. Jamal stated that all universities had implemented Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program as a mandate and autonomy for universities in preparing their students and graduates to develop advanced competencies aligned with technological development. Prof. Jamal added that creative and innovative learning is needed to ensure that students have attitude, knowledge, and skills aspects of learning. “Adaptability and the ability to respond towards all changes are the competencies that determine a nation’s competitiveness,” Prof. Jamal Wiwoho stated.

Prof. Jamal also mentioned that the eight activities in MBKM could build relevant competencies that connect the business, industry, and workplace for university students. “We greatly hope that this webinar could provide a means for sharing sessions and guidelines among the PTNBH,” Prof. Jamal added. The remark from Prof. Jamal was soon followed by an opening remark from Prof. Adi Sulistiyono, the Chairman of Academic Senate UNS and managing committee, who stated that the webinar aims to provide an active contribution from MSA in supporting MBKM. The webinar will attempt to evaluate and provide recommendations for MBKM implementation. Prof. Adi also emphasized that MBKM aims to encourage students to master various knowledge outside their program to equip them in entering the workplace and business world. MBKM is an ideal learning model that requires synergy among universities, government, industry, community, and media.

According to Prof. Adi, MBKM implementation in the last two years has encouraged universities to be more adaptive and flexible, allowing students to study their program in depth, and enrich skills relevant to their program. MBKM model also encourages teachers to improve their competencies to elaborate theories, find new theories, and write scientific publications. However, the program still faces numerous challenges in its preparation process, implementation, and evaluation. “There are different perceptions at the national level regarding the concept and implementation of MBKM,” Prof. Adi state. “This is because MBKM has not been introduced well to all lines of universities, teachers, academic staff, and students.”

The last remark from Vice-Chairman of MSA PTNBH, Prof. Dr. Sulistiowati, S.H., M.Hum., through online media, emphasized the importance of MBKM implementation for universities to shape smart, leading, competitive, adaptive, flexible, productive, and competitive graduates with characters based on Pancasila. In the remark, Prof. Dr. Sulistiowati also stated that the webinar is essential to provide positive contribution and knowledge sharing among the PTNBH universities in creating the best graduates who are ready to face the global job market that demands students to master multidisciplinary skills. “Also, the need to have a practical skill,” she added.

The remarks were followed by material sharing by the speakers, including the Director-General of Higher Education, Prof. Ir. Nizam, M.Sc., DIC., Ph.D., who delivered the first material in the webinar, followed by a discussion and conclusion. Humas UNS

This uniqueness has led UNS to keep growing and developing with its various achievements and reputation, transforming and strengthening itself as a Legal Entity State University (PTNBH) since October 26, 2020,” explained Prof. Jamal.

Prof. Jamal expressed appreciation to UNS academic members for their participation in advancing UNS. “In particular, I, as the leader of UNS, want to express my deep gratitude and appreciation for the hard work, intelligent work, and sincere work in a fellowship symphony that has contributed the best to the progress and glory of UNS,” he said.

Prof. Jamal also addresses his highest respect and appreciation to the founders and past officials who have laid the foundations for UNS development and their high commitment to guiding UNS development with all its dynamics and challenges. He added that as a new tradition at the 46th UNS Anniversary, the university would bestow an award to lecturers with excellent performance in research activities and community service, inventors, and productive creators for the Patents and Intellectual Property Rights category in 2022.

Prof. Jamal invited the participation of all UNS academic members and DWP at the UNS Academic Senate Open Session for the UNS 46th Anniversary ceremony, both virtually and directly on-site. This ceremony will include the inauguration of the UNS Tower Ki Hadjar Dewantara Building and the UNS Satellite Campus Building in Madiun Regency, as well as the opening of the UNS Creative Industry Exhibition at Solo Techno Park (STP). Evaluation and plans were shared in the 2022 New Year Silaturrahmi held offline in G.P.H Haryo Mataram Auditorium UNS and online through the Zoom Cloud Meeting and UNS YouTube channel. In the ceremony, the Rector of UNS, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho stated that UNS has achieved various accomplishments in 2021, such as being ranked 201-300 worldwide by Times Higher Education Impact Ranking; ranked 401- 450 worldwide by QS World University Ranking; ranked 13 in Indonesia, ranked 2,535 worldwide by Webometrics, and ranked 7 in Indonesia and 99 worldwide by UI Greenmatrics.

However, Prof. Jamal emphasized that UNS should not be satisfied with these accomplishments. He stated that these achievements should be improved, considering UNS plan to be a World Class University after being listed as PTNBH. Collaboration and innovation among UNS academic members are required to achieve this target.

“No matter what is the accomplishment achieved by UNS, it is inseparable for the hard works, complete work, sincere work, and willingness to work together from the executive board and UNS academic members. It means synergy, collaboration, and togetherness will become the key of UNS success that currently is transforming into PTNBH,” Prof. Jamal stated.

On the same occasion, the Vice-Dean for Human Resources, Finance, and Logistics Affairs Faculty of Engineering (FT) UNS, Prof. Wahyudi Sutopo, also delivered a speech on “Strengthening Innovation in UNS Autonomous Era.” Prof. Wahyudi emphasized that UNS needs to pay more attention to innovation to be able to compete at international level.

“In reality, the issues on global education demands individual, group, and organization to have speed, creativity, and innovation as the keys in winning the competition. Innovation should become a driving force of productivity, and in turn, innovation will result in breakthrough power to present in the market faster, provide the solution faster, and with the provided efforts, the triumph will be there,” he stated.

Prof. Wahyudi also discussed IKU 8 on international accreditation that needs to be improved. According to him, accreditation is vital in improving the other seven IKUs.

“The focus on IKU 8 could move IKU 1 to IKU 7. IKU 8 becomes the priority because it is the hardest, the external party assessed (us), it takes time, and needs to be planned. However, with literacy and experts in (UNS), international accreditation could be achieved in four years,” he added.

Hopefully, UNS’ achievement and reputation worldwide could improve rapidly in 2022. Humas UNS

UPK ITS was led by Dr. Umi Laili Yuhana and the Chief of UPK ITS Anggara Ayu Rucitra S.T., M.MT and team. The group was welcomed directly by the Chief of UNS Public Relation and Media Dr. Deddy Whinata Kardiyanto in Ruang Sidang IV dr. Prakosa Rectorate Building UNS.

The visit was held as a return visit for UNS Public Relation and Media, who visited ITS the previous month. UPK ITS also wants to strengthen the relationship and shared knowledge in the public relations field with UNS Public Relations and Media.

“Thank you to UPK ITS for visiting UNS. This is like a brotherhood relationship considering UNS is a young PTNBH. Hopefully, we could learn from each other,” Dr. Deddy stated.

Dr. Deddy also asked UPK ITS to transfer their knowledge in public relations from how to build a relationship with media, information dissemination, and data management in ITS.

“Hopefully, we could learn about PPID and how UPK ITS created its releases so that we could develop,” he added.

On the occasion, Dr. Umi also thanked UNS Public Relation and Media for welcoming her group. Before starting the discussion, Dr. Deddy Whinata Kardiyanto also thanked UPK ITS for the visit, which marks a good relationship between both universities with Public University with Legal Entity (PTNBH)

In his remark, the Chief of Public Relations Office and Media UNS, Dr. Deddy Whinata Kardiyanto, introduced the team of UNS Public Relations Office and Media and shared the programs of his office to Untidar.

“We are from Public Relations Office, and Media UNS thanked Untidar Public Relations to UNS,” Dr. Deddy explained.

Dr. Deddy hoped that through this visit, both institutions could exchange information. “(We) could learn from each other, UNS could learn from Untidar, and Untidar could gain new knowledge to be implemented in their university after coming back from UNS,” he added.

The Coordinator for Planning, Collaboration, and Public Relations Affairs Untidar, Sulistyaningrum, S.E., stated her intent and purposes of visiting UNS. Sulistyaningrum mentioned that Untidar Public Relations Office wants to learn from UNS Public Relations Office with its experiences.

“UNS has University with Public Entity (PTNBH) status, and Untidar wanted to learn from UNS. Hopefully, the knowledge sharing could be applied in our institution, Untidar Public Relations Office,” Sulistyaningrum stated. Humas UNS
