UNS—Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta conducts an international-scale cultural event. The Center of Excellence in Science and Technology (PUI) Javanologi UNS organizes the UNS Jawametrik and the Javanese Cultural Awards 2025. The event took place at R. Ng. Yosodipuro Building, PUI Javanologi Pavilion UNS, on Tuesday (3/6/2025).

Various prominent national and international figures attended the conferral ceremony. One of them is the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Fadli Zon, S.S., M.Sc. His presence adds significant value and indicates the government’s support for preserving Javanese culture.

The event’s peak features cultural performances and awards for selected individuals and institutions. The event began with a ceremonial procession of honored guests led by Dr. Deniawan Tommy Chandra Wijaya, S.Sos., M.I.Kom., as the procession leader (cucuk lampah). The procession to the PUI Javanologi Pavilion was lively, accompanied by the Reog Ponorogo performance—a communal prayer led by dr. Nanang Wiyono, M.Kes followed the procession.

Reports and Remarks from Prominent UNS Figures

Afterward, the Head of PUI Javanologi UNS, Prof. Sahid Teguh Widodo, S.S., M.Hum., Ph.D., delivered a report. In his report, Prof. Sahid emphasizes the strategic role of Javanologi UNS in the development of Javanese culture. He states that the PUI Javanologi was established in 2011 as a reference center for Javanese culture. Nine professors, 13 doctors, six master’s degree holders, and four active research staff support the PUI Javanologi. They document, research, and reconstruct various Javanese traditions and cultures. He added that the institution continues strengthening national and international networks for sustainable cultural preservation.

“Javanologi UNS continues to grow and evolve as a reference center for Javanese traditions with various strategic fields of study, including Traditional Arts, Traditional Textiles, Scientification of Traditional Medicine, Biodiversity, Social and Humanities Studies, Javanese Culinary Field, Biodiversity Conservation, Preservation and Study of Javanese Manuscripts, Traditional Schools, Museum Development, Internationalization of Java on the Global Stage, and the Global Javanese Diaspora,” stated Prof. Sahid.

Following the report, the Acting Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Fitria Rahmawati, S.Si., M.Si., delivered her speech. In her remark, Prof. Fitria asserts UNS’s commitment to advancing Javanese culture through innovative programs. One such initiative is the UNS Jawametrik, launched in 2021. She explained that the UNS Jawametrik is a ranking system for institutions developing Javanese culture worldwide. She hopes that the Jawametrik will catalyze the global Javanese cultural network.

“Through the UNS Jawametrik and the Javanese Cultural Awards programs, we hope to establish a stronger, more relevant, and sustainable Javanese cultural ecosystem. May these programs strengthen the role of the PUI Javanologi UNS as a center for cultural knowledge, encourage collaboration among institutions, and advance Javanese culture as a dynamic and inspiring national identity on a global level,” she explained.

A Cultural Seminar from Prof. Sumarsam

Earlier in the evening, a cultural seminar was held on the theme “Nekara and Gong-Type Instruments in Indonesia/Southeast Asia”. The colloquium featured Prof. Sumarsam, M.A., Ph.D., from Wesleyan University, USA. The seminar occurred at the R. Ng. Ranggawarsita Hall, PUI Javanologi UNS. Prof. Sumarsam is a world-renowned gamelan maestro and has taught in the United States since 1972. He is a pioneer in gamelan education abroad. He also actively bridges Javanese culture with the international community. In the seminar, he discussed the philosophical values and distribution of gong instruments in Southeast Asia.

Cultural Performances Enliven the Event

Diah Kristina, M.A., Ph.D., and Prof. Dr. Sunny Ummul Firdaus, S.H., M.H. The warmth and various traditional art performances uplifted the event. The PUI Javanologi presented the Tari Gasir Ngenthir, Tayub, and Reog Ponorogo performances. Additionally, the Tari Gambyong Pareanom PKJT was performed by the UNS Coordinating Board of Traditional Arts (BKKT). The atmosphere grew even more enchanting with Gamelan Gadhon (the ‘soft’ instruments of the Javanese gamelan) by Takariadi Sapto Dibyo and his team.

Award Conferral in Several Categories

On this occasion, the Anugraha Praba Nawasena Bhudaya “Beacon for the Future of Culture” award in the Cultural Statements of Indonesia category was presented to the Minister of Culture, Dr. Fadli Zon, S.S., M.Sc.
In addition, the Anugraha Praba Nawasena Bhudaya “Beacon for the Future of Culture” in the Javanese Cultural Ambassador to the World category was awarded to Winslow-Kaplan Professor of Music at Wesleyan University, USA, Prof. Sumarsam, M.A., Ph.D. The award acknowledges his role in introducing traditional Javanese arts to the international stage.

One of the event’s key moments was conferring the Top 10 UNS Jawametrik 2025 awards. These awards were divided into the Top 10 UNS Jawametrik Domestic Category and the Top 10 UNS Jawametrik Abroad Category. The domestic category was awarded to ten institutions in Indonesia that actively promote Javanese culture through education, research, and community service. Meanwhile, the international category recognized ten cultural institutions, educational organizations, and Javanese diaspora communities dedicated to preserving Javanese cultural heritage in various parts of the world. These awards have become a vital medium for mapping the global Javanese cultural network and serve as a form of appreciation for the tangible contributions of many parties in preserving ancestral traditions.

The event concluded with the Tayub dance performance by Java Mustika Blora, led by Warsidi Kedoel. The entire event ran smoothly, solemnly, and meaningfully. Through this occasion, UNS reaffirmed its position as a global pioneering institution preserving Javanese culture.
Dr. KPH Eddy Wirabhumi, Chairman of MAKN, described the seminar as a timely occasion to discuss the role of Nusantara kingdoms in contributing to Indonesia’s development. He emphasized the importance of ongoing collaboration with the government to realize justice, prosperity, and welfare. He also expressed his appreciation to UNS for its contribution and partnership in hosting the event, noting that universities play a crucial role in preserving and advancing cultural heritage.

The main session of the seminar explored various topics under the chosen theme. Slameto Dwi Martono from the Ministry of ATR/BPN presented on “Registration of Customary Land and State Land within the National Land Law System.” Prof. Sahid, in his capacity as the Cultural Guardian of the Karaton Kasunanan Surakarta, delivered a talk on “Nusantara Kingdoms: The Silent Strength.” Prof. Warto, representing the academic community, discussed “The Role of Nusantara Kingdoms in Welcoming Indonesia Emas 2045 from a Historical Perspective.”

Echoing Prof. Warto, PYM Edward Syah Pernong and KRT Djuyamto Rekso Pradoto also provided insights from the MAKN and cultural perspectives, respectively. The seminar concluded with a discussion and a question-and-answer session, followed by the Musyawarah Agung MAKN.

This event underscores the UNS’s commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17: Partnerships for the Goals, by fostering collaboration between academic institutions, cultural stakeholders, and government agencies.

Tiwi provided a brief overview of Batik and the tools needed for the craft. The students then practiced drawing with a canting on pre-patterned fabric. The international students expressed great interest in learning about Batik and appreciated the hands-on experience, which covered the techniques from applying wax with a canting to dyeing the fabric, all within a 120-minute session.

UNS — Center of Excellence (PUI) Javanologi, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, hosted an international seminar under the theme ‘Djawa Soegih: Exploring the Old, Reaching the New,’ Monday (5/9/2022). This seminar was held virtually by presenting five speakers, including Prof. Dato Dr. Sukiman Sarmani from the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia; Johan Raksawidjojo from the Java Suriname-Netherlands Diaspora; Prof. Dr. M. Baiquni, M.A., from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM); Suryakenchana Omar, Ph.D., Student/Sessional Lecturer from the Java-Singapore Diaspora; and Dr. Sutanto M.Sc., DEA from UNS. Additionally, this international seminar also presented Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Mayor of Surakarta; Taj Yasin Maimoen, Vice Governor of Central Java; and UNS Rector, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho, delivered an opening speech.

In his remark, Prof. Sahid Teguh Widodo, the Head of PUI Javanologi UNS, said that the theme raised is noteworthy since Java is part of the emerald of the equator. “Java is the world’s manikkam (gemstone), which holds a thousand mountains of gold, fertile land, and prosperity. It is not only rich in tangible resources but also intangible resources such as knowledge, thought, and philosophy that grows and develops in cultural life. PUI Javanologi will strive to preserve Javanese cultures through research and studies,” he explained.

The Mayor of Surakarta, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, said that Java is also a center of culture with advanced ancient technology, thus, it holds a diverse cultural and historical heritage. “This cultural heritage includes temples, architecture, traditions, art, cuisine, clothing, and developed technology. This heritage is in line with human resources diversity blessed with various professions in the field of art and culture. The City Government of Solo strongly supports the preservation of the arts, culture, and traditions that we have,” said Gibran.

Meanwhile, Prof. Jamal said that there is a Javanese proverb saying “gemah ripah loh jinawi” (serene, prosperous, abundantly fertile), which refers to an ideal economy. Further, there were also sublime social institutions developed in the community for generations. “Traditions such as visiting each other, empathy, guyub rukun (harmony), mutual cooperation, and many others, as original Javanese values continue to grow and develop. Java also holds a diverse cultural heritage and superior products, such as batik, shadow puppets, gamelan, architecture, manuscripts, and daggers that have been internationally recognized by UNESCO as Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity,” said Prof. Jamal.

Thank you for the beautiful collaboration from the creators, and welcome to the show tonight,” said Prof. Sajidan.

The Director of IFI Yogyakarta, Francois Dabin, also expressed his happiness because he could gather at this Pendhapa.
Francois Dabin added that IFI Yogyakarta is proud and supportive of this new artwork performance. Moreover, the Legend of Godogan works was created harmoniously, bringing together artists, styles, traditions, and diverse cultures. “We also thank Mr. Alex Grillo for his contribution to promoting gamelan to France. Gamelan, which is a symbol of traditional Javanese culture, has also received special attention in France. And I think it will gain more attention because gamelan has been inaugurated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage (WBTB) by UNESCO,” said Francois Dabin.

Francois Dabin also expressed his unwavering gratitude for UNS’ support in organizing this event, considering that this agenda was the second occasion where UNS welcomed the play of Alex Grillo and the Gayam Community16. During the question and answer session, Alex Grillo, who is also a French composer and percussionist, said that the Legend of Godogan is a cultural collaboration between France and Indonesia along with musicians and dancers from the Gayam Community16.

“The show will be performed in combination with electric gamelan. This work involves two artistic cultures, Indonesian and French, consisting of dance and spatial gamelan elements mixed with electric musical instruments. This combination refers to a stage performance consisting of dramaturgy, narration, song, and stage arts. During the performance, the narrative is also delivered in two languages, French and Indonesian. Some narratives are recited by a narrator, while others are sung, like the Javanese tradition,” Alex Grillo concluded. Humas UNS

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta organized a national oration and soft launching for the UNS Javanologi Building. This ceremony was conducted at the Pendapa R. Ng. Yasadipura Center of Excellent for Science and Technology (PUI) Javanologi UNS, Thursday (2/6/2022). The Soft launching was marked with a signatory of inauguration inscription by the Rector of UNS, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho. The ceremony was also attended by the Rector of Universitas Pertahanan, Laksamana Madya TNI Prof. Dr. Ir. Amarulla Octavian, M.Sc., DESD., ASEAN Eng, and the Chair of PUI Javanologi, Prof. Sahid Teguh Widodo, alongside UNS leaders.

The PUI Javanologi Building rehabilitation project started on 30 July 2021 and was completed on 12 April 2022. The construction effort that had stalled before was re-commenced last year as a structure rehabilitation. In his report, the Head of PUI Javanologi Rehabilitation Project from PT Mei Karya, Adiztya Wibisaputra, expressed his gratitude to all parties supporting the project. “Finally, the physical construction was completed smoothly, though there were numerous challenges that appeared along the way. The rehabilitation conducted includes improvement of building structures, building architecture, mechanical electrical work, and landscape areas around PUI Javanologi for a perfect function,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the Head of Central Java Regional Settlement Infrastructure Center, Budi Mulyo Utomo, S.T., states that this reconstruction project is based on applicable regulations such as President Decree No. 3 of 2019 regarding construction, rehabilitation, or renovation of community markets, university infrastructure, Islamic religious university, and the primary and secondary education units. “This rehabilitation, hopefully, can fulfill the needs to improve and optimize higher education quality. Hopefully, it can be beneficial for the lecturers, students, and community around UNS,” said Budi.

Prof. Jamal Wiwoho reveals that this soft-launching became a thrilling moment for the UNS academic members since it coincided with the Pancasila Day on 1 June 2022, which allowed UNS to host two concurrent activities. “This construction started from an idea that UNS, which was established in the center of Javanese cultural civilization development, should have a center for Javanese cultural tradition study, at the same time implementing UNS Vision and Mission that based on the noble values of national culture. In 2011, UNS successfully established the Center of Javanologi Institute, under LPPM UNS supervision,” explained Prof. Jamal.

With the completion of the Javanologi Building, the Rector of UNS wishes that the building can contribute to innovative and productive research and ideas, both from the lecturers and students, in developing Javanese culture through the Higher Education Tri Dharma. “Hopefully, the PUI Javanologi can provide an optimum support to the efforts to actualize the values of national cultural traditions, especially Javanese culture as part of local wisdom to strengthen the identity of the Indonesian nation,” he concluded. Humas UNS

UNS — 21 February is commemorated as International Mother tongue Day as a crucial part of life considering the extinction rate for both mother tongue or local languages. Such extinction needs to be anticipated, especially in Central Java with its Javanese language as both mother tongue and local language.

The Chief of Center for (PUI) Javanologi Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Prof. Sahid Teguh Widodo, S.S., M.Hum., Ph.D., stated that there are many ways to preserve the Javanese language, including through the Natural Language Processing (NLP).

Prof. Sahid explained that NLP is a branch of artificial intelligence (AI) that records human interaction in natural language using a machine. Although the technology was developed half a century ago, NLP is considered a new finding that could assist its users in accessing data rapidly.

“I tried to pass the bright hallway of artificial intelligence (AI) by trying to see the possibility of a simulation on the Javanese language to be modeled in a machine. I think the advanced AI in conservation process (protection, development, and utilization) of Javanese language could be achieved promptly,” Prof. Sahid explained in the Seminar of International Mother tongue Day “Preservation of Local Languages through Digital Dictionary” on Saturday (19/2/2022).

Further, Prof. Sahid explained that NLP data is divided into labeled and unlabeled categories. Labeled data includes the semantics that needs to be prepared manually, while unlabeled data is additional data related to syntax. These two data could provide meaning and the implementation of grammar and dictions.

In the online seminar held by the Language Center of Central Java Province in collaboration with UNS, Prof. Sahid praised the launching of the Javanese Culture Digital Dictionary developed by the Language Center of Central Java Province. The digital dictionary is expected to help in preserving the Javanese language.

“The idea to develop Javanese Language Digital Dictionary is a sharp leap of scientific thought. Besides being prepared manually, it can be developed using the NLP method,” he added.

Prof. Sahid hoped that the Language Center of Central Java could prepare Javanese language corpus as the basis of Javanese language protection through artificial intelligence. Humas UNS

UNS — Alumni Association (IKA) of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, in collaboration with the Center for Excellence (PUI) Javanologi, held Wedangan discussing the ‘Tosan Aji in Local Wisdom’ on Wednesday (9/2/2022).

The online event invited three speakers with keris knowledge, the Chief of PUI Javanologi UNS, Prof. Sahid Teguh Widodo, M.Hum., Ph.D., Empu Basuki Teguh Yuwono, M.Sn. from Padepokan Keris Brojobuwono, and cultural practitioner, KRT Gaura Mancacaritadipura, as speakers.

In his opening remark, a representative from IKA UNS, Dr. Abdul Kharis Almasyhari, stated that Keris is the product of advanced metallurgy technology and the advantages owned by Javanese culture that need to be appreciated. Although many think that Keris is a mystical creation, its production process has reliable scientific knowledge that is appropriate to be discussed on the academic stage. This opinion was supported by Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, Business, and Information Affairs UNS, Prof. Dr.rer.nat Sajidan, M.Si., who stated that Keris is a noble creation that contains philosophical thought and diverse variety posing as local excellence at the international level.

As the person behind the enlistment of Keris as cultural heritage by UNESCO, KRT Gaura Mancacaritadipura shared the enlistment process in UNESCO. The Damartaji Foundation, led by Haryono Haryoguritno, received the duty from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to meet 49 enlistment criteria. He mentioned that the international community had paid attention to Keris, and it was used as a palace token, leading to many Keris being kept in museums abroad.

Empu Basuki Teguh Yuwono, M.Sn., also emphasized that the remaining mistake is the thought that Keris is merely a weapon and mystical tool, while it also serves as a means of communication and a memento that makes people become better people. As a professional in the Keris-making process, the smith acts as an artisan who creates Keris as an embodiment of their thoughts. As a local cultural work, Keris is also identical to the global culture. “We do not need to worry about bringing Keris to the global community. (Because) when more people access Keris, more people will understand its meaning,” Empu Basuki stated.

He added that Keris is local art and culture on the global stage and a symbol of local wisdom with a special position in the global culture. Therefore, to introduce this work to the local people, the professionals could use modern language that focuses on the millennials and ensure that the materials are understandable.

Prof. Sahid Teguh Widodo, M.Hum., Ph.D., added material on purwaka keris, which reach its heyday during Sultan Agung Hanyakrakusuma who require every person to own a keris. Keris, therefore, is a mark of technological advancement, specifically in metallurgy in the past. Humas UNS

UNS — The Center for Excellence (PUI) Javanologi Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta will hold an International talkshow and Javanologi Virtual Exhibition 2021. This plan was announced by the Chief of PUI Javanologi UNS, Prof. Sahid Teguh Widodo in a press conference on Friday (10/9/2021). The event will have Nunggak Semi: MSME’s Activities Post Pandemic in Solo Raya as a theme and will be held online on Tuesday (14/9/2021).

PUI Javanologi UNS will invite the Major of Surakarta, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, and the Rector of UNS to provide an opening remark. Several invitees will also attend as speakers from Indonesia Embassies in various countries, including Mochammad Rizki Safary (KBRI New Delhi, India), H.E. Mayerfas (Indonesian Ambassador for the Netherlands), Julang Pujianto (Indonesian Ambassador for Suriname), Salman Al Farisi (Indonesian Ambassador for South Africa), Hendra Satya Pramana (Consulate General of Indonesia in Noumea, New Caledonia), and Deny W. Kurnia (Consul General of Indonesia for Shanghai, China).

In the release, Prof. Sahid Teguh Widodo explained that the pandemic had affected various life aspects, including the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The theme represents his belief that MSMEs will recover post-Covid-19 pandemic. In Javanese culture, tunggak semi can be defined as an effort to develop civilization. Therefore, without forgetting the Javanese philosophy of the dynamic tunggak, the economy will continue to bloom after the pandemic.

“Tunggak is the remaining trunk of a cut-down tree. Even after the tree was cut down, tunggak will continue to bloom if it is taken care of and watered with the community creativity and innovation,” Prof. Sahid stated.

To support the revival of MSMEs in Surakarta, PUI Javanologi invited 26 MSMEs to exhibit their products. These MSMEs are Copper Leluhur (brass and copper crafts), Batik Nderbolo Kliwonan, Dharma Budaya (wayang kulit production center), Wedang Uwuh Java Drink (traditional culinary beverage), Pengrajin Blangkon Solo Agung TW, Chocotin (Tawangmangu chocolate gift), Lurik Rachmad (wastra lurik), Djamoe Bude (traditional Javanese jamu), Gayatri Jewelry (accessory industry), and other 18 MSMEs.

Prof. Sahid added that during the talkshow, the invited businesses would have an opportunity to deliver their ideas or suggestions. They also asked to submit issues that need to be discussed by the speakers during the talkshow. As the Chief of Committee, Dr. Dewi Retno Sari, said that an international course will follow this event.

“In October, we will launch the Teko Jahe (Intensive Virtual Course on Javanese Cultural Heritage) and Javanologi TV. We will also have an e-commerce program and international journal,” Dr. Dewi explained. Humas UNS
