UNS — The Craft and Tradition Research Group of the Faculty of Arts and Design (FSRD), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, held a training on batik packaging production. This batik packaging is made in ‘Batik Tiga Negeri’ special pattern from Surakarta. The training took place virtually on Saturday (30/10/2021) at Regina Pacis High School Surakarta.

Previously, in 2020 a similar training was carried out. This year’s training acts as a continuation of the previous year’s training. In the previous training, the Regina Pacis High School students were introduced to the Batik Tiga Negeri Surakarta pattern. This year, the students are invited to make packaging for Batik Tiga Negeri Surakarta products to store the products neatly. Moreover, to enhance consumers’ attraction. A tote bag shape is chosen for the packaging, which aims that the packaging can be re-used for various other purposes. In this virtual training, 20 participants were selected, representing students from grades 10 and 11.

“Each student has received tools and materials prepared by Craft and Tradition RG FSRD team. The participants were assisted by UNS students who are members of this community service because of the pandemic conditions limiting people’s mobility. Before the training, the tools and materials were sent to all selected participants first,” said Dr. Sarah Rum Handayani as the Head of Community Service

This training was attended by lecturers and students (RG assistants for research and community service activities), Regina Pacis High School students, and teachers at Regina Pacis High School Surakarta. In his speech, Dr. Sarah invites students to be creative happily. Furthermore, students are invited to watch a tutorial video prepared by the team to facilitate participants’ understanding during the online training.

This training was led by Novia Kartikasari, S.Sn., MA., and Dr. Theresia Widiastuti. The students were quite enthusiastic about participating in this event. Some of them are highly interested in art, and the majority can finish the task according to the instructions and examples provided by the team. For this purpose, the Craft and Tradition RG also created a WhatsApp Online Packaging Production Training group as communication media with the participants, including the teacher at Regina Pacis High School Surakarta. After the event, the students actively consulted their work through the WhatsApp group. Humas UNS

UNS — Javanese traditional medicinal beverages with various health benefits have existed from a long time ago, well-known as jamu. Unfortunately, it is hard to find this healthy beverage now. This beverage is made from traditional medicinal plants that can be cultivated around the house, and the tradition of jamu consumption has blended with the Javanese culture that will pose a significant cultural loss when people stop understanding its health benefits.

To prevent the cultural loss surrounding jamu, the Philology Research Group from Local Literature (Javanese Language and Literature) Program Faculty of Cultural Studies (FIB) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held socialization on traditional Javanese medicines on ‘Rheumatic Pain in Old Javanese Manuscript’. This program aims to introduce plants that can be used as traditional medicines and bring health benefits to the community.

The offline program was held in Blag-Bligan Hall Pajang RW 12 Pajang Village, Surakarta, on Tuesday (5/10/2021). Two speakers were invited to the event: Dr. Supana, M.Hum, and Drs. Imam Sutarjo, M.Hum., with Drs. Sisyono Eko Widodo, M.Hum as the moderator, all of whom are the Faculty Members of FIB UNS. The village government and neighborhood leader also attended the program as participants.

As reported in fib.uns.ac.id, the program was conducted as a response towards the low utilization of traditional medicines in the community that contradicts Javanese philosophy on memayu hayuning jiwa or maintaining soul through God’s creation in the form of medicinal plants. As an example, the medicines for rheumatic pain are explained in Serat Kawruh Bab Jampi-jampi Jawi (book of Javanese medicinal plants) which also teaches the traditional medicines for headache and back pain. In the book, rheumatic pain can be treated with besaran root, headache with red turi, adas, and pulasari, while back pain with nus fish bones (beluntak), ginger, onion, and vinegar.

Dr. Supana also added that traditional medicines are also explained in Serat Centhini, especially for illnesses that are often experienced by the community, for example, cough and toothache. “The medicine for cough are turmeric tubers, red shrimp paste, old tamarind, coconut milk. Mixed then be drunk. Another medicine for cough is coconut oil, kunci, and old tamarind, mixed and be drunk,” he explained.

This program is expected to increase local community knowledge on traditional medicines from their surrounding medicinal plants. By understanding the medicinal plants and their benefits, the community has participated in preserving the Javanese jamu consumption tradition. Humas UNS

UNS — Cooking oil waste rarely received attention from the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) and is often disposed of without prior processing. This practice could pollute the environment. Concerned with the procedure, the Islamic Economy and Finance Research Group, Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a Community Service Program (PKM) on the use of cooking oil waste in Wates Village, Simo Subdistrict, Boyolali District

The team was led by Dr.Falikhatun, M.Si., Ak., and has three members Prof. Dr. Salamah Wahyuni, SU, Dr. Muthmainah, M. Si., Ak., and Dr. Muchammad Cholil, MM. The team conducted assistance and training in Wates Village Hall on Wednesday (7/7/2021). The program was attended by villagers, SMEs, and the Wates village government. Through the training and assistance used cooking oil was processed into candle and soap.

As reported from feb.uns.ac.id website, Falikhatun stated that used cooking oil from small industries in the village is often disposed of without processing. In contrast, the oil could be processed into side products, such as cleaning products for floors or goods. But it cannot be used for a shower.

“Besides cleaning products, SME could also create a candle from used cooking oil,” Falikhatun explained.

Besides the training, the team also provided material on entrepreneurship delivered by Prof. Dr. Salamah Wahyuni, SU. In her material, Prof. Salamah explained that successful entrepreneurs should have “AKU” or Angan-angan, Kemampuan, and Usaha (Dream, Ability, and Effort).

“A person who wants to be an entrepreneur need to have a clear and measurable dream, when the dream will be achieved, and in what form. Then the ability which is related to one’s intellectuals could be improved through diligent and patient learning and training. The effort is actions performed with full responsibility and without despair,” Prof. Salamah explained.

Through this program, the Research Group hoped that the SMEs in Wates Village could improve their capacity and read new opportunities in developing new products or businesses. Humas UNS
