UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta continues to enhance its role in educational innovation through the AppliedHE Xchange 2025 event. A panel discussion titled “Rankings & Ratings for Industry-Relevant Skills” was part of the program. It explored how universities and industries can collaborate to produce graduates who meet global market demands.

Insights from the Panel Discussion

On Tuesday (25/2/2025), the third-panel discussion featured Zeba Salman as the moderator. The panelists included:

Ibrahim Fatwa Wijaya, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D. – Director of Planning, Partnerships, Internationalization, and Reputation at UNS, Indonesia.

Dian Ekowati, S.E., M.Si., M.AppCom(OrgCh)., Ph.D. – Head of Planning and Development at Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia.

Prof. Sibrand Poppema – President of Sunway University, Malaysia.

The discussion focused on the relationship between rankings and employability in education. Representing UNS, Ibrahim emphasized that universities should go beyond rankings and prioritize critical thinking and problem-solving skills. He linked this idea to the Islamic world’s historical contributions to innovation, urging modern universities to rekindle this spirit.

“Rankings should serve as a tool to assess an institution’s strengths and weaknesses rather than just a competition,” Ibrahim stated.

Meanwhile, Dian Ekowati stressed that universities play a crucial role in bridging the skills gap in the workforce. She pointed out that ranking systems increasingly assess graduate employability—focusing on how well graduates meet labor market demands.

“We must ensure that our graduates possess not only technical expertise but also soft skills. These include creative thinking, collaboration, and innovation,” she explained.

Adding to the discussion, Prof. Sibrand Poppema noted that rankings often prioritize research and reputation over employability. However, employability is gaining recognition as a key metric.

UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta actively engaged with the Hajj Financial Management Agency (BPKH) Board at the AppliedHE Xchange 2025 event. The event, held at the InterContinental Bali on Monday (24/2/2025), gathered key higher education and industry stakeholders. They discussed strategic issues, including Hajj fund management in the education sector.

BPKH’s Commitment to Education

BPKH Supervisory Board Member Mulyadi emphasized the crucial role of universities in supporting efficient and sustainable Hajj fund management. BPKH manages IDR 171 trillion in Hajj funds, showing a steady growth trend.

To ensure transparency and accountability, BPKH partners with universities and research institutions. These partnerships include internship programs, research initiatives in Islamic finance, and scholarship provisions for students. Students gain practical experience and contribute to financial management strategies through these initiatives.

“The profits from Hajj fund management support public welfare programs, such as education and healthcare. They also contribute to religious activities and economic empowerment,” Mulyadi explained. “In education, institutions allocate these funds for scholarships and internships to enhance student research.”

UNS Welcomes BPKH’s Contributions

UNS Vice Rector Prof. Fitria Rahmawati expressed gratitude for BPKH’s efforts to advance education.

“Programs like research initiatives, internships, and scholarships help universities prepare students for industry challenges, particularly in Islamic finance,” she said.

She also emphasized the importance of continuous collaboration between academia and financial institutions. Strengthening these ties enhances curriculum development, practical exposure, and real-world problem-solving opportunities for students, ensuring graduates meet industry demands.

Strengthening Strategic Partnerships

This collaboration aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17, “Partnerships for the Goals.” By fostering strategic partnerships between universities and financial institutions, UNS and BPKH support inclusive economic growth. They also contribute to sustainable Islamic economic development in Indonesia.

By inviting BPKH as a key speaker, UNS reaffirms its commitment to bridging academia and industry. This initiative aims to produce competent graduates ready to contribute to Hajj fund management and the Islamic finance sector.

Ultimately, this initiative supports Indonesia’s vision for Islamic economic development through quality education, research, and cross-sector partnerships. UNS and BPKH strive to empower future generations with the knowledge and skills needed to sustain Islamic finance in Indonesia. They also aim to expand its reach beyond the country.

UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) played a crucial role in the AppliedHE Xchange 2025 conference. The event took place at InterContinental Bali on Tuesday (25/2/2025). Prof. Dr. Fitria Rahmawati, S.Si., M.Si., Vice-Rector for Academic and Research at UNS, served as one of the keynote speakers. She presented a country report on Indonesia’s higher education transformation, policies, and innovative approaches.

Indonesia’s Higher Education Transformation: Challenges and Opportunities

Prof. Fitria emphasized that Indonesia’s higher education system is undergoing a significant transformation. This aligns with the principle of Mangesthi Luhur Ambangun Nagara. The principle emphasizes building an advanced society while upholding noble values.

“This transformation includes curriculum reforms, innovative learning methods, and technological advancements that enhance human resource capabilities,” she stated.

UNS’s Role in Shaping Future Learning Policies

Prof. Fitria discussed Indonesia’s success in integrating various learning methods. She spoke during the session titled “Education Policy: The Future of HE Learning.” These include traditional in-person learning and synchronous virtual classes. They also encompass asynchronous platforms such as Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC). This blended approach personalizes student learning, a key factor in enhancing higher education quality.

Furthermore, UNS has successfully implemented internship programs through both regular pathways and the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program. The university has also engaged in collaborative research initiatives such as matching fund programs.

“UNS serves as a prime example of university-industry collaboration. Our initiatives include MBKM internships, joint research projects, and the involvement of industry practitioners as guest lecturers. These efforts ensure that students gain practical insights aligned with industry needs,” she added.

Expanding Access to Higher Education

Indonesia continues to support educational access through various scholarship schemes. Programs such as BIDIKMISI/KIP-K, Indonesian Education Scholarship (BPI), and LPDP help increase learning opportunities for students from underprivileged backgrounds. They also support the development of top talents at a national level.

Strengthening Global Collaboration

Prof. Fitria concluded her presentation by stressing the importance of cross-institutional collaboration to address global challenges in higher education. She highlighted that partnerships with universities and industries worldwide are essential for advancing educational policies and innovations.

“Collaboration between universities and industries is key to tackling global higher education challenges. Transforming curricula and learning methods is a crucial step toward creating an adaptive and relevant educational landscape,” she stated.

The session also featured responses from distinguished panelists. These included Kevin Downing from City University of Hong Kong and Sinethemba Mpambane from WSU South Africa. Prof. Dr. Tirta Mursitama from Indonesia’s Ministry of Investment also joined as a panelist.

UNS’s Contribution to Global Education Development

Budi Wahyono, S.Pd., M.Pd., Ph.D., chair of the organizing committee, emphasized UNS’s participation in this conference. He stated that it underscores Indonesia’s strategic role in fostering global partnerships. These efforts align with the nation’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17, which promotes inclusive and sustainable education development.

With its dedication to innovation and collaboration, UNS continues to shape the future of higher education. Its contributions extend both in Indonesia and on the global stage.
