Dr. Anis’s presentation was “Arabic and Preservation of Local Wisdom in Southeast Asia“. It explored the Arabic language’s role beyond religious functions. He discussed how Arabic has contributed to shaping the cultural, social, and societal values of Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia. According to Dr. Anis, Arabic plays an active role in preserving local wisdom through religious literacy traditions within Muslim communities.

Dr. Anis also referenced classic works such as Syarah Al-Hikam by KH. Sholeh Darat from Indonesia. In addition, there was also Shaykh Abdullah Gangohi from India. These texts, which contain theosophical Sufi teachings, are not only religious but also serve as vehicles for transmitting local values. These works exist in Javanese, Malay, and Indonesian translations. They play an important role in strengthening cultural identity and preserving ancestral values in the face of modernization.

Dr. Anis’s Call for Collaboration in Preserving Heritage

Furthermore, Dr. Anis highlighted a critical gap in current research on language extinction. He cited studies showing that younger generations are increasingly abandoning heritage languages. He argued that the preservation of Arabic-language literature, including Pegon-script texts in Indonesia, is vital in combating cultural extinction.

“Despite the growing body of research on Arab culture’s influence in Asia, studies still lack focus on the Arabic language’s role. This gap highlights its importance in preserving local wisdom,” Dr. Anis emphasized.

Using Systemic Functional Linguistics, Dr. Anis analyzed the information structure in Syarah Al-Hikam. He examined both the original Pegon-script manuscript and its Indonesian translation. His findings revealed that translation is not merely about converting language but also shaping communication patterns between texts and readers. This emphasizes the importance of high-quality translations to maintain the cultural and spiritual values embedded in the texts.

In conclusion, Dr. Anis stressed the importance of collaboration among universities, Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), and research institutions. He specifically mentioned Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) as a key partner in this effort. He advocated for the documentation and study of Pegon manuscripts. He also suggested that heritage text translations should incorporate modern translation theories to improve public accessibility.

UNS — Two innovative students from Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) competed as the “Go To Japan” team. They proudly secured second place in the Infographics subcategory at the 2025 Student Scientific Festival (Festival Ilmiah Mahasiswa/FILM). They are Aditya Wisnu Yudha Marsudi (Undergraduate Physics) and Desnia Anindy Irni Hareva (Undergraduate Statistics). They impressed the judges with SOLID (Solar Panel-Powered IoT-Based Landslide Detection). SOLID is an eco-friendly and sustainable system designed to detect potential landslides.

“We wanted to address the serious issue of landslides in Indonesia. This natural disaster endangers around 40.9 million people living in 918 vulnerable zones. To respond to this, we developed SOLID, an innovative and environmentally friendly detection system,” Aditya explained to uns.ac.id on Thursday (24/4/2025).

SOLID combines energy-efficient solar panels with IoT technology, sending real-time alerts via WhatsApp to residents within a 10-kilometer radius. The prototype uses solar panels as its main power source. It also includes a lithium battery to provide backup energy when sunlight is unavailable.

The system includes three key sensors: soil moisture, slope inclination, and ground displacement. SOLID reads real-time data from these sensors. It issues three alert levels—“Alert,” “Warning,” and “Danger”—through WhatsApp. The system uses parameters set in the Arduino IDE to determine the appropriate alert.

Advanced Forecasting and Physical Alarms

Beyond real-time alerts, SOLID uses a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) algorithm to forecast landslides up to 14 days in advance. This early warning allows more time for evacuation and mitigation. In addition, the system features a physical alarm—buzzers and strobe lights—for immediate on-site awareness.

The team developed their project with valuable guidance from Dr. Ir. Sorja Koesuma, S.Si., M.Si. He provided insights on landslide indicators and technical aspects. “His mentorship provided a strong foundation. Over two months, we worked intensively on both the infographic and the SOLID prototype,” Aditya said.

Recognition at FILM 2025 and Future Aspirations

FILM 2025 hosted three main categories: Essay, Scientific Writing (LKTI), and Infographics. The event gathered over 1,800 participants from 114 universities in 22 provinces across Indonesia. The UNS team competed under the “Technology” sub-theme. It aligned with the festival’s theme: “Innovative Synergy of Youth in the Society 5.0 Era to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Towards Golden Indonesia 2045.”

The competition included several selection phases, from proposal submission to semifinal and final presentations. Finalists showcased their innovations in an expo, an award ceremony, and a gala dinner.

“We’re incredibly honored to win in our first-ever national infographics competition,” Aditya shared. “This experience taught us the value of collaboration, creativity, and research in delivering impactful visual communication.”

He also encouraged fellow students to take on new challenges. “Believe in yourself, utilize your team’s strengths, and don’t hesitate to innovate. Every challenge is a chance to grow,” he added.

To recognize these accomplishments, UNS organized an Appreciation Day on Tuesday (29/4/2025) at the courtyard of the dr. Prakosa Building. The event served as a formal gesture of gratitude from the university to the students. They represented UNS on the global stage. During the ceremony, the Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., personally handed over awards to the BUV team members.

It also strengthens the UNS’s global reputation in science, technology, and engineering. Ahmad Al Faruq, General Manager of the BUV Team, also shared his reflections during the event. “I speak on behalf of my teammates from Bengawan UV—a team that consists of students from diverse study programs. We build our unity on innovation, hard work, and trust. Roboboat gave us victory after a long and challenging process. Although we did not meet all our goals at SAFMC, the experience was equally meaningful and educational.”

He stressed that both achievements and setbacks have shaped the team’s mindset. “We have grown from the journey—technically and personally. The obstacles we faced, including time pressure and limited resources, only made us stronger. We are committed to continual progress and to bringing greater pride to UNS,” he concluded.

At the International Roboboat Competition, the Bengawan UV Team earned second place in the Autonomy Challenge category. They outperformed several leading institutions, such as the University of Michigan, Cornell University, and Florida Atlantic University. Dr. Sigit Purnomo Adi, S.Sn., M.Sn., Head of the Fine Arts Study Program and Co-Curator, emphasized Titik Awal’s deeper meaning. He stated that the exhibition helps shape students’ artistic identity and supports their creative development. In addition, the exhibition marks a significant milestone for students entering the professional art world.

“Early-semester students of UNS FSRD’s Fine Arts Program organized this exhibition. True to its name, Titik Awal marks their first step in the creative process,” Dr. Sigit said on Sunday (27/4/2025).

The exhibition features over 100 artworks, including sketches, Indonesian ornamentation, and two-dimensional visual designs (nirmana dwimatra). It also showcases paintings, prints, ceramics, sculptures, and installation pieces. These installations allow visitors to interact with works that align with the theme of beginnings and personal exploration.

Moreover, the year-long preparation included concept development, artwork selection, and catalog compilation. Dr. Sigit expressed hope that similar events will continue in the future to nurture students’ creative development.

“This exhibition provides a learning space for freshmen to understand how to organize, curate, and present art to the public,” he concluded.

Among the standout pieces was a painting titled She by Sekar Nurbayyinah. The canvas portrays a side-view of a human skeleton facing a large mirror with a broken golden frame. The mirror reflects abstract white and orange-yellow fragments, symbolizing shattered memories. A dark background adds drama to the interaction between the skeleton and its reflection.

In the exhibition catalog, Sekar explained that the skeleton represents the core self, while the mirror embodies painful memories. “Still, people must embrace them as part of life’s journey,” she wrote. Her work received notable attention from both visitors and curators.

Okky Dwi Filianto, the Site Operational Manager at TPST 1, welcomed the UNS and Mulawarman University teams. He explained that the site, with a capacity of 74 tons per day, had completed construction and was now ready for operation. “IKN is designed to be a green city, embracing modern waste management practices,” Okky said.

This eco-friendly bus stop features advanced carbon capture technology that filters pollutants, including carbon emissions and carcinogenic substances. This innovation helps create a cleaner environment for public transport users.

Their journey began with extensive research to identify key environmental challenges and potential solutions. The team collected data from various studies, developed their concept, and created 3D models. They then compiled their findings into a scientific paper, which they submitted through the competition’s platform. In the final stage, they presented their project online via Zoom before a panel of judges and fellow participants.

Hamdani Maftuh Rohma shared his thoughts on the competition’s impact on the team.

The Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Brian Yuliarto, Ph.D., personally presented the award. He handed it to Prof. Irwan Trinugroho, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., Vice-Rector for Planning, Cooperation, Internationalization, and Information at UNS.
