GYIS is a program focused on inspiring young people to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through cultural and educational exchanges. It also provides a platform for delegates to compete in the SDGs Project Presentation. Delegates are divided into groups to create or develop innovative solutions addressing issues related to specific SDG goals.

During the event, UNS delegate Sekar led her team in creating an innovation addressing SDG Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and Goal 11 (Climate Action). Inspired by Dr. Hashfi Hawali Abdul Matin, S.T., M.Ling., Sekar proposed the creation of a biogas device made from rice husks and animal manure.

“I initially wanted to propose a Waste-to-Energy Power Plant (PLTSA), but my mentor suggested a more accessible innovation. Inspired by Dr. Hashfi, a lecturer in Environmental Science at UNS who created biogas from rice husks, my team and I added animal manure as a biogas ingredient,” Sekar explained to uns.ac.id on Monday (10/28/2024). “The result was a tool called ‘Sekot Gas’ (Rice Husk and Manure for Biogas), which costs just USD 133 to produce and can provide energy for 2 to 3 months.”

Sekar shared that her team had been preparing for the project presentation since August, though they faced several challenges due to the team members’ different locations.

“We began preparing the project presentation about a month before the competition, around August. However, our team faced challenges with logistics, as we all live in different areas. The practice sessions and project work were mostly done online, and at times, progress was delayed by a week due to everyone’s schedules,” Sekar said.

When asked how she felt about being awarded Best Presentation for the SDGs Project and Best Leader, Sekar expressed surprise, as she felt her team’s preparation was somewhat lacking. However, she was grateful that their hard work and teamwork paid off.

“This experience is unforgettable. I learned a lot about teamwork, problem-solving, and public speaking. I also gained many inspiring connections from this opportunity,” Sekar added.

The Artist Talk, held in the H.B. Sutopo Auditorium of FSRD UNS, was divided into two sessions. The first session was presented by Fassih Keiso, Ph.D., who shared his insights on “Art & Humanity.”

During his presentation, Keiso showcased some of his internationally exhibited works. One notable example was an art performance reflecting a past war, where the government provided blankets for the victims. These blankets were transformed into clothing, symbolizing how aid (the blankets) could restore what was broken (the clothing). “This illustrates how the blankets helped restore what had been damaged,” Fassih Keiso explained.

The second session was delivered by Cassey Chen from Singapore, focusing on “Art to Inspire”. Chen emphasized that art serves as a source of inspiration. International exhibitions have also featured several of her works.

“I conducted a year-long research on chewing gum, which later gained media attention and was displayed in a gallery. This project is one of the reasons I gained recognition on the international platform,” Cassey Chen shared.

At the end of her talk, Cassey left the audience with two key messages. “There are two important things for all of you: first, hard work, and second, always aim to be better than the person next to you, so you can inspire and motivate each other,” she added.

The Artist Talk event aimed to inspire students to further explore and develop their artistic skills at both national and international levels. HUMAS UNS

This event was held online on Thursday (9/9/2021) and invited Dr. Peter Esperanza, from the Barstow Community College in the United States (US). Two hundred participants attended the event with diverse backgrounds, teachers, university teachers, and educational practitioners.

Dr. Triana Rejekiningsih, M.Pd., as the Head of the Master Program in Educational Technology, hoped that this event could strengthen UNS – MCE Singapore collaboration to become more strategic.

“MCE has provided various educational services and digital learning innovation. Thus, it is hoped that this course could strengthen S2 TP students and graduates’ competencies as the developers of educational technology,” Dr. Triana stated in the news release received by uns.ac.id on Saturday (11/9/2021).

Vice Dean of Academic Affairs FKIP UNS, Prof. Slamet Subiyantoro, opened the event and appreciated Dr. Triana and fellows in holding the national and international level academic event. The representative from MCE, Mr. Malvin also appreciated and thanked the Master Program in Educational Technology (TP) for selecting MCE as the partner in shaping future academic technology creators, especially in designing e-teaching materials.

As the speaker, Dr. Peter delivered materials on “Designing E-Teaching Materials” and reminded that the educational technolog should not be afraid of starting innovation. “Thus, the benefits can be felt by the community,” he said.

Dr. Triana added that the discussion was held interactively, and participants were enthusiastic in giving questions, including on how to create creative and innovative learning. Humas UNS
