UNS—The Community Service (KKN) students from Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta successfully organized a socialization event with the theme “Building Resilience and Preparedness for Gawan Village Residents Against Flood Disaster Risks.” This initiative was part of the students’ efforts to raise awareness and enhance community readiness in facing disasters, while also marking the establishment of the Disaster Risk Reduction Forum (FPRB) in Gawan Village.

Gawan Village, located in Tanon District, Sragen, is prone to flooding due to its proximity to the Bengawan Solo River. Recognizing this risk, the KKN UNS team initiated the “Disaster Resilient Village” socialization to equip the community with knowledge and skills to handle disasters.

The event was held at Gawan Village Hall and attended by various community representatives, including village officials, local leaders, and representatives from the Sragen Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). The main speaker, Danang from BPBD, delivered a presentation on disaster management, risk mitigation, the importance of preparedness, and actionable steps that residents can take to minimize the impact of flood disasters.

Sutrisna, S.Sos., the Head of Gawan Village, expressed his appreciation to the KKN UNS students for organizing the event. He hoped the establishment of FPRB and the socialization activities would enhance the village’s disaster resilience. “I highly appreciate the initiative of UNS and the KKN students for organizing this event. I hope Gawan Village can become more prepared to face any potential disasters,” he said.

Izabel Kalina, the Chair of the Socialization Committee, stated that the event was just the beginning of a broader program initiated by the KKN students. “I believe that Gawan Village is a safe place, but it’s still essential for us to continue learning and preparing so that if a disaster strikes, the village is resilient and ready to respond,” she told uns.ac.id on Friday (13/9/2024).

During his presentation, Danang emphasized that building a disaster-resilient village starts with individuals and families, and is strengthened by community cooperation. “Preparedness is not just the government’s responsibility, but everyone’s. With the right knowledge and preparation, we can reduce the risk and impact of flood disasters,” Danang said.

The event also included an emergency evacuation drill involving all participants. This simulation demonstrated the steps residents should take in the event of sudden flooding. The community’s enthusiasm was evident in their active participation during the drill and their questions about technical aspects of disaster preparedness.

A significant achievement of the event was the establishment of the Gawan Village FPRB. The forum serves as a coordination platform between residents, the village government, and relevant stakeholders to improve disaster preparedness and implement sustainable mitigation efforts. The forum also aims to ensure that the knowledge and skills gained from the socialization can continue to be applied and developed by the community.

During the formation of FPRB, Gawan residents agreed to appoint representatives from various neighborhood units (RT) to serve on the forum’s management team. The forum will collaborate with BPBD and other relevant parties to implement disaster mitigation plans, such as drainage management, flood-prone area mapping, and routine simulation exercises.

Beatrix Datu, the head of the FPRB formation committee, expressed her hopes that the event would not end with the forum’s establishment but would lead to concrete actions taken by the community to address disaster risks. “We will continue to support the Gawan Village FPRB, and we hope that our efforts will bring sustainable benefits to the village,” she added.

The event concluded with a collective commitment by all residents and FPRB members to actively participate in disaster mitigation efforts. Residents were also given brochures and disaster mitigation guides as references for everyday life.

With this event, Gawan Village is expected not only to become resilient in facing disasters but also to serve as a pioneer in disaster risk reduction in the Tanon District and surrounding areas.

UNS — Students from KKN UNS Group 179, in collaboration with the Jetak Village Government, have initiated the establishment of a Disaster Risk Reduction Forum (FPRB) in Jetak Village, Sidoharjo District, Sragen Regency. The event was held on August 13, 2024, at the Jetak Village Hall. It was attended by 40 representatives, including members of women’s groups such as the Family Welfare Movement (PKK), Posyandu (Integrated Health Post), village officials, village midwives, the Village Consultative Agency (BPD), Babinkamtibmas (Community Police Officers), Human Development Cadres (KPM), and community leaders from across Jetak Village.

Siswanto, the Head of Jetak Village, stated that the FPRB initiative was driven by the KKN UNS students 2024 to mitigate disaster risks. This activity is part of UNS’s commitment to support the realization of disaster-resilient villages, as mandated by law.

Jetak Village, Sragen, urgently requires the establishment of a Disaster-Resilient Village (Destana) due to its location along the Mungkung River, which annually triggers flooding in the area. “It can be said that floods occur here every year during the rainy season, mainly due to the overflow of the Mungkung River,” Siswanto explained.

In his remarks, Siswanto expressed hope that the forum would make Jetak Village resilient not only to floods but to other potential disasters as well.

Daffa Mutazakki Nufus, the leader of KKN UNS Destana Group 179, emphasized that the FPRB’s role is crucial not only during disasters but also in pre- and post-disaster efforts. The establishment of this forum is expected to strengthen Jetak Village’s disaster management capabilities.

In line with this initiative, a socialization on the formation of FPRB was conducted prior to its establishment. The event featured two guest speakers: Dr. Agung Hidayat, S.Pd., M.Sc., a researcher and disaster management activist from UNS who also serves as the Field Supervisor for KKN Group 179, and Danang Hermawan, S.H., Head of the Prevention and Preparedness Division at the Sragen Regency Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). The socialization event was attended by various participants, including village officials, neighborhood association (RT/RW) heads, and community organizations from Jetak Village.

UNS — Student Community Service Program (KKN) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta Team 61 held socialization on the development of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (UMKM) in Tlogotirto Village, Sragen, Thursday (17/2/2022). The program responds to the dynamic changes in the business world, including for MSMEs that are demanded to adapt to the current technology.

To uns.ac.id, Monday (28/2/2022), Team KKN 61 UNS shared their stories in the implementation of their programs. The team collaborated with the local government through the Department of Industry and Trade (Disperindag) and the Department of Cooperatives (Dinkop) of Sragen District. The socialization of “Government Policy in MSMEs Digital Development in Supporting Community Business” is expected to aid the local government programs.

Drs. Sigit Danang Jaya, M.M., the speaker, explained the common issues faced by the MSMEs and the strategies taken by the local government to empower the MSMEs. “We hope that MSMEs in Sragen District, especially in Tlogotirto Village, could be braver in developing their business into the bigger markets,” he stated. He added that the strategies offered by Sragen Government are assistance, mentoring, digitalization of MSME products, and providing space to enter tourism sectors and transportation infrastructure such as rest areas in a high way.

The second speaker, Tri Warsono, explained the MSME digital development further. He believes that MSME digitalization is the appropriate step to support local businesses. He stated that the government offers a digital marketing strategy for the local business to improve the businesses that were affected by the pandemic. He also explained various marketplace platforms and social media platforms that MSMEs could adopt to promote and sell their products.

“In this modern era, it is better if, as business owners, we follow the development by changing our marketing strategy using digital platforms because it could reach a wider market,” he added.

Niken Mega Utami, the person in charge of the program, explained that the socialization aims to provide new knowledge for the MSMEs, especially regarding the government’s policies on digital marketing. This socialization is also expected to provide output for MSMEs in improving their production and marketing through various digital platforms.

“One of the outputs of this socialization is establishing MSMEs group in Tlogotirto Village to facilitate coordination between MSMEs and related offices,” she added. Humas UNS

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta stated its readiness in assisting Sragen District Government in re-arranging Gunung Kemukus area. This statement was delivered by the Rector of UNS, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho, in the Interactive Dialogue on “The Management and Post-Construction Development in Gunung Kemukus Area” in Sunan Hotel, Monday (20/12/2021).

This event was also attended by Sragen Regent, dr. Kusdinar Untung Yuni Sukowati and the Head of Regional Settlement Infrastructure Center (PPW) Central Java Directorate of Settlement Ministry of Public Works and Human Settlement (Ministry of PUPR) Cakra Nagara S.T., M.T., M.E.

Prof. Jamal explained that the existing image of Gunung Kemukus as a dark tourism destination needs to be changed, and UNS will take the role to change the image. The Rector is distraught that the religious tourism site turned into dark tourism filled with fornication business.

“This kind of belief needs to be fixed; we are ready to collaborate with Sragen. in the future. Hopefully, the area will become a tourism destination for children, cultural tourism destination so that children could grow well and their mother does not have a negative perception,” Prof. Jamal added.

UNS Support

UNS will provide several supports for the Sragen District Government in supporting the Gunung Kemukus revitalization process into “The New Kemukus” by the Ministry of PUPR. First, UNS will send its Study Centers to the Institute for Research and Community Services (LPPM) UNS, Research Groups in programs, and Center for Excellence (PUI) Javanologi UNS. The study centers that will be involved in this program are Research and Development Center for Tourism and Cultural, Population and Gender Research Study Center, Entrepreneurship Development Center, and Rural Areas Research and Development Center. The Research Group that will participate in the program is from the green economy, applied technology, tourism, and health. It is possible that more centers and groups will participate during the implementation

“This (program) could be used as a means and facilities so that the existing studies could change cultural perception and directed it into a more positive image,” Prof. Jamal stated.

Secondly, UNS will utilized Gunung Kemukus area in Sumberlawang Subdistrict, Sragen as a site for Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program implementation because the area has been revitalized by the Ministry of PUPR. According to the release from the Sragen District Government, the revitalization process of the area has reached 95% on November 2021. This process includes managing the entryway, building pedestrian, public space, Pangeran Samudra tomb, and other public facilities.

“Through this program, our students could be involved in Gunung Kemukus development program as a cultural destination through several activities. It will also involve faculty members, industries, and students to meet the 20-semester credits or equal to 4-6 months in the field,” he explained.

The last role of UNS is sending students through the Thematic Student Community Service Program (KKN) in Gunung Kemukus. Prof. Jamal explained that this program would be implemented periodically following the existing and clear roadmap. Through the Thematic KKN UNS program in Gunung Kemukus, UNS will involve around 3,000-5,000 students ear year and 350 field supervisors who will provide understanding on area utilization for the locals so that they feel the assistance.

UNS Recommendation

In the interactive dialogue, Prof. Jamal also shared recommendations for Sragen District Government in creating The New Kemukus as a family and religious tourism destination. Prof. Jamal recommended that the roadmap for The New Kemukus be prepared in an integrative manner and holistically because he thinks the area has numerous homework in the social, economic, and cultural issues.

“This (process) needs to involve a comprehensive handling by involving extensive stakeholders from the central/local governments, private sectors, university, and community,” Prof. Jamal explained.

UNS also suggested that Sragen District Government improve community awareness on the development plan of The New Kemukus as a source of local government income (PAD) by improving the quality of infrastructures and supporting facilities and integrating the local community’s interests with all related stakeholders.

“Third, to change the negative image, (we) need to build a new narrative on Pangeran Samudra, develop souvenirs destination, and improve the quality of homestay and the culinary sector,” Prof. Jamal added.

UNS also asked Sragen District Government to direct the area into a healthy, gender-responsive, and children-friendly tourism destination. Lastly, Prof. Jamal suggested the re-arrangement of spatial layout and settlement to create a more modern, interesting, and attractive destination.

“We will also assist with independent projects to create credits for the great cultural resources. For example, the European countries are advanced but respect the culture, and it is exciting,” he concluded. Humas UNS
