UNS—A community service team from the Nano Converter Research Group in the Mechanical Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, has developed an innovative sustainable technology to improve access to clean water in remote areas. The team implemented a solar-powered Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purification system at Tijarotul Qur’aniah Islamic Boarding School in Bulu Subdistrict, Sukoharjo Regency, from March to October 2024.

According to ft.uns.ac.id on Wednesday (10/30/2024), this RO system, with a capacity of 1.000 gallons per day (GPD) and powered by photovoltaic (PV) panels, harnesses solar energy to store power in batteries that drive the pump and RO machine. This setup produces high-quality drinking water, reducing dependency on external electricity and water sources.

Professor Zainal Arifin, Ph.D., Head of the Nano Converter Research Group, noted that this technology is ideal for areas with limited electricity access. “We aim to create an environmentally friendly and practical solution, particularly for Islamic boarding schools and rural villages. By utilizing solar energy, the system is efficient and produces high-quality drinking water, verified in laboratory testing,” he explained.

The UNS service team consists of experts in mechanical engineering and energy, including Prof. Dominicus Danardono, Prof. Dr. techn. Ir. Suyitno, Dr. Wibawa Endra Juwana, Dr. Rendy Adhi Rachmanto, and Dr. Indri Yaningsih. Their expertise and dedication have made Tijarotul Qur’aniah Islamic Boarding School self-sufficient in meeting drinking water needs while promoting environmental preservation through renewable energy use.

Laboratory tests confirm that the water produced by this RO system meets all physical and chemical standards for drinking water safety. This innovation not only demonstrates energy efficiency but also makes a significant contribution to environmental conservation and the advancement of eco-friendly technology in Indonesia. HUMAS UNS

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Fransisca Ervin Ayu Puspita Ningrum, student of Management Program, Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) UNS brought new proud achievement for the university by Winning the 1st place in Sukoharjo District Tourism Ambassador Election 2021 at the end of October 2021. The last-semester student admitted that she was delighted and grateful for the achievement.

“Grateful, touched, and proud to be trusted to represent Sukoharjo and introduce it to more people. But I fully comprehend that this is not the end, but a beginning to work together in assisting the government in promoting tourism in Sukoharjo and a beginning to be a better person,” Ervin stated on Sunday (14/11/2021).

The long selection process started on May 2021 with a myriad of selection stages from written examination, public speaking, and interview. The written examination was on tourism and general knowledge, followed by a public speaking assessment in which the participant received a question to be answered in front of the juries and other contestants. “The interview consists of Javanese language examination, English, tourism, nationalism, and general knowledge,” she added.

Ervin stated that one of her reasons to participate in the contest was because she did not want to miss a valuable experience to be part of Sukoharjo Tourism Ambassador. She also feels that being an ambassador will provide an opportunity for her to develop her potential better. “Not only for my personal interests but also for the interests of people,” she said.

The ambassador also shared that she received full supports from her family, especially during the delay in the grand final round due to the severe Covid-19 condition in Indonesia. Ervin hoped that her new title could contribute to the Sukoharjo Tourism Ambassadorial name. She will continue to promote all aspects of the Sukoharjo District to the community.

“As a university student, keep trying to be good at academics but do not forget the environment and neighborhood. We need to be sensitive and responsive to help our surroundings,” she concluded. Humas UNS
