Prof. Herman delivered his inaugural speech titled “Designing Mobile Power Plants Using Waste Materials with a Micro Combustor System.” He highlighted the dual challenges of waste management and the growing energy demand. Waste management in Indonesia, he noted, remains a complex issue requiring comprehensive solutions due to its environmental, health, economic, and social implications.

“Data from the Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation shows that daily waste production in Indonesia reaches 99.713,18 tons. One potential solution is Waste-to-Energy (WtE). WtE can serve as a basis for future renewable energy systems that are both economical and environmentally friendly. If managed with the right technology and environmental considerations, WtE can be classified as green energy. According to the Directorate General, Indonesia’s WtE potential could reach 2.379,96 megawatts,” Prof. Herman said during his remarks.

Prof. Herman and his team have developed a tool to process waste into a green energy source. The development of the Waste-to-Energy (WtE) project led by Prof. Herman is divided into three stages: processing solid waste into Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF-5), carrying out the pyrolysis and gasification of RDF-5, and utilizing syngas and liquid fuel for the development of mobile power plants based on a micro combustor system. At the laboratory scale, the tool has proven successful in converting waste into electrical energy. This innovative device has also been patented under registration number P00202209096.

“The development of the micro combustor, designed to generate electricity from waste-based fuels, is a pivotal innovation in this research. This tool aims to revolutionize energy generation. Through studies conducted in Japan and outer space stations, we have produced valid findings with significant potential for clean energy development in aviation. This project also supports efforts to achieve net-zero emissions in the aviation sector,” Prof. Herman explained.

Prof. Herman’s research achievements, including three patents, underscore the success and practical applications of the technologies developed. These innovations reflect a significant contribution to the renewable energy sector.

“With support from the government and international collaboration, this research demonstrates that Indonesians are capable of contributing to environmentally friendly technological innovations. These findings can serve as an inspiration for future generations,” he added.

The outbound visit focused on a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and the dissemination of research findings, involving academics and researchers from the D3 English Program at UNS and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney. The FGD was held on November 5, 2024, at the Brennan MacCallum Building, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Sydney.

“The purpose of the FGD was to discuss the progress of the collaborative research conducted so far and to draft a proposal for the second year of the joint research. The discussion aimed to develop more innovative and effective strategies to support the continuity of research in the fields of linguistics and English language education,” stated Karlina.

The dissemination session took place on November 6, 2024, with the theme “Using Corpora in Linguistics and English as a Second Language Research,” held at Room A02.01.105, Social Sciences Building, SSB Seminar Room 10, University of Sydney. The session introduced the application of corpora in linguistic research and English language teaching, with a focus on practical implementation to enhance research methods and teaching practices at both institutions. The case studies presented during this session were derived from data collected in the first year of international collaborative research.

According to sv.uns.ac.id, the outbound visit aimed to strengthen global academic partnerships in the fields of linguistics and English language teaching as a second language. The goal is to bridge the gap between academia and industry while encouraging independence in technology development that benefits both society and the business world. The event attracts a wide range of attendees, from academics to industry professionals and the general public, to promote self-sufficiency in producing technology that serves society and the business and industrial sectors.

The event was officially opened by Heri Mulyono, the Financial Assistant of the Solo City Government, representing the Solo City Administration. He expressed the administration’s support for SIF 2024, noting that it aligns with Solo’s vision of becoming a center for innovation and technology in Central Java.

“We hope this event will continue to promote research and technological development that meets the needs of the community. We also encourage collaboration between academia, business, and government to create an ecosystem that supports the birth of new technologies,” Heri said.

The products displayed were the result of serious research, development, and testing in various fields of information technology. The event serves as a bridge between higher education and the wider community, allowing technological innovations to be directly experienced by different sectors, including business and industry.

Several standout UNS products caught the attention of visitors, including the VR Anima Safari application, a parking system using computer vision, and the Digitefa Information System based on AI. Seven students from the D3 Informatics Engineering SV UNS program also actively participated in organizing and conducting the training sessions.

Rudi Hartono, S.Si., M.Eng., explained that the goal of this initiative was to enhance teachers’ ability and readiness to leverage digital technology in support of learning, in line with the rapid advancements in information technology. “The event was attended by 50 teachers from SMAN 1 Surakarta, who enthusiastically participated in various training sessions prepared by the UNS team,” Rudi told uns.ac.id on Tuesday (27/8/2024).

On the first day, participants were introduced to the topic “Using AI to Support Learning.” This session emphasized the importance of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the teaching and learning process to create a more interactive and adaptive learning experience. Participants learned about various AI applications that can be implemented in classrooms and how to operate them.

The second day continued with a workshop on “Enhancing Technical Skills in Educational Media Development.” During this session, teachers were trained on how to develop and utilize various effective and engaging digital learning media for students. The technical skills covered included the use of media development software, the creation of interactive content, and the application of multimedia techniques to enhance the appeal and effectiveness of learning.

As part of this digital transformation, the teachers were also introduced to an e-learning platform specifically developed to support learning at SMAN 1 Surakarta, accessible at https://elearning.smansaska.org/  . “This platform is expected to become the main tool for delivering more effective and efficient digital learning,” Rudi added.

Annisa’s participation in the Surakarta Genre Ambassador 2024 began with a desire to actively engage and show concern for the quality of life of her peers, regardless of their backgrounds. She also believed that joining the Surakarta Genre Ambassador would provide her with a platform to practice creative and innovative ideas, benefiting the wider community, especially in Surakarta.

“Why did I choose the Genre Ambassador? I wanted an active role and a caring principle that can help improve the lives of teenagers. Additionally, joining the Genre Ambassador is an opportunity for me to develop creative and innovative ideas to improve myself and provide benefits to the broader community,” Annisa, the Advocacy Winner of Surakarta Genre Ambassador 2024, said.

Annisa was chosen as the Advocacy Winner after going through various selection stages. Before becoming a finalist, she competed against 72 participants in the selection stages of document screening, written tests, and interviews. The document screening involved a thorough evaluation of personal data, vision and mission, organizational experience, and achievements. Annisa explained that the written test consisted of multiple-choice questions, short essays, and long essays about planned generation knowledge, health, and youth issues. The interview stage was divided into two parts: genre knowledge and self-potential.

“After a lengthy selection process, Alhamdulillah, I was declared a finalist for the Surakarta Genre Ambassador 2024 along with 19 other participants. Finalists were required to undergo HIV/AIDS and drug tests before proceeding to the next stage. We also underwent a two-week quarantine, during which we received training in public speaking, public testing, advocacy or work programs, talent tests, and rehearsals where we learned about genre knowledge, opening numbers, and opening dances in preparation for the grand final. We also participated in a deep interview stage,” Annisa explained to uns.ac.id on Friday (27/7/2024).

During the final night, Annisa continued to excel and made it to the top five finalists of the Surakarta Genre Ambassador 2024, where she had the opportunity to present a speech outlining her vision and mission if she were selected as the Genre Ambassador of Surakarta 2024.

“On the final night, Alhamdulillah, I was chosen as the Advocacy Winner for the Surakarta Genre Ambassador 2024. This title was awarded based on the public testing scores of the work program I proposed. The assessment was based on target accuracy, output, commitment to implementation, and the institutions involved. My work program, ‘Genre BerAKS,’, stands for a generation that is active, campaigns, socializes, and is informative,” Annisa expressed with gratitude.

She explained that her work program encourages a generation to be active in campaigns and socialization, and informative by participating in volunteer activities or conducting the “Ganting” or Stunting Prevention Movement. This program aligns with the urgent need in the community to address stunting, especially in Surakarta.

“The Genre BerAKSI program provides an opportunity for teenagers to play an active role in tackling the stunting problem by collaborating with posyandu cadres and health community institutions to directly engage in the field, offering counseling and monitoring to parents with children experiencing stunting,” she added.

The Advocacy Winner of the Surakarta Genre Ambassador 2024 emphasized that the stunting issue can be addressed and minimized by ensuring nutritious food, maintaining clean water sanitation, and fostering a healthy environment. She also called on all Indonesians to participate in “Ganting” and implement dedicated programs to strive for a stunting-free future.

The two-day event, held on Friday (14/6/2024) and Thursday (20/6/2024), successfully attracted 100 participants and took place in the UNS Vocational Auditorium.

The first day opened with a mentoring session by Ratih Rachmatika, Founder and CEO of SIAB Indonesia. She delivered crucial material on “How to Make a Business Plan for IT Startup.” In this session, participants gained in-depth knowledge on the critical steps in drafting a solid and sustainable business plan in the IT sector, as well as how to write professional proposals.

On the second day, Randi Apriansyah, a Startup Founder and Senior UI/UX expert, delivered an inspiring session on “Competitive Spirit with Startup Innovation and Pitching Fundamentals.” This session emphasized the importance of innovation in the startup world and provided practical guidance for startup teams on effective pitching to potential investors and business partners.

The Head of the D3 IT Program at SV UNS, Eko Harry Pratisto, S.T., M.Info.Tech., Ph.D., stated that this event was organized by the D3 IT Program at UNS and EmailKomp, moderated by experienced moderators, Fiddin Yusfida A’La, S.T., M.Eng., and Yudho Yudhanto, S.Kom., M.Kom.

The highlight of Technopreneur Academy 2024 was the pitching and review session held on the final day. Five innovative startup teams were selected from the 17 participating teams to present their startup ideas to the mentors and other participants. The teams that had the opportunity to pitch were Barkaz, Eggcellent Tracker, NutriHype, Panel Surya RT, and PTNGuide. “Each team received valuable feedback from the mentors, which will help them develop and refine their products and project proposals moving forward,” Eko explained.

Technopreneur Academy 2024 not only provided valuable knowledge and skills to the participants but also fostered a spirit of collaboration and innovation among the students. “This event is expected to serve as a foundation for many students to embark on their journey in the tech startup world and contribute to the advancement of the technology industry in Indonesia. “We have conducted extensive observations and held intensive discussions with industry stakeholders. They need professionals with applied bachelor’s qualifications,” the Dean of SV UNS, Drs. Santoso Tri Hananto, M.Acc., Ak., said during an Open House event held on campus on Thursday (20/6/2024).

Santoso added that public interest in vocational higher education has also been increasing. This is evidenced by data from the Education Testing Management Agency (BPPP) of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek), which shows that 20 of the most sought-after programs are vocational programs, including Diploma 3 and Diploma 4 or applied bachelor’s degrees.

When asked about the uniqueness of the newly launched programs, Santoso explained that the Manufacturing Engineering Technology program focuses on the engineering processes and products of advanced material-based manufacturing.

“Graduates of UNS Manufacturing Engineering Technology will be able to design and engineer production processes and control the quality of advanced material-based manufacturing products,” Santoso explained.

The Digital Banking and Finance program trains students to be proficient in financial services and banking product management, risk management in digital banking and finance services, especially credit and investment risks. Meanwhile, the Digital Marketing program will focus on data analysis and digital marketing through social media.

“Digital marketing is very broad. Besides general digital marketing skills, our graduates are specifically prepared to excel as content creators and enhance the function of social media as a marketing tool,” Santoso added.

The Mandarin Language program will specifically hone students’ Mandarin language skills for business communication. In addition to being fluent in Mandarin, graduates will also be equipped with interpreting and translation skills, both oral and written.

Santoso is also optimistic that graduates will be absorbed into the industry and workforce.

“We equip them with practical skills that meet industry needs. Our curriculum is designed in collaboration with industry, as they will be the ones employing our graduates,” Santoso added.

In addition to bringing in practitioners as lecturers on campus, Santoso mentioned that SV UNS also sends students for internships for three semesters in the industry. This ensures that what they learn is what they will be doing after graduation.

“Vocational graduates are capable of completing tasks professionally, not just knowing how to do them,” Santoso concluded.

Currently, SV UNS manages 21 Diploma 3 programs and 7 applied bachelor’s programs. These programs are holding an Open House for two days, Thursday (20/6/2024) and Friday (21/6/2024) at the Mesen Campus to provide information about their outstanding programs.

During the event, UPT SPMB provided a general overview and information about the D4 Manufacturing Engineering Technology Study Program and the D4 Mandarin Language for Business and Professional Communication Study Program. This event also served as a step in introducing the two new programs in line with the timeline for new student admissions in 2024.

The session was moderated by Azriela Kesia Agusta Putri, a Business Management student from the SV 2022 program, and featured presentations by the Head of the D4 Manufacturing Engineering Technology Study Program, Dr. Hammar Ilham Akbar, S.Pd., M.T., and the Head of the D4 Mandarin Language for Business and Professional Communication Study Program, Kristina Indah S.R, B.Ed., M.TCSOL.

D4 Manufacturing Engineering Technology Study Program

The Head of the D4 Manufacturing Engineering Technology Program, Dr. Hammar Ilham Akbar, S.Pd., M.T., explained that the introduction of this new program aims to upgrade the curriculum to keep pace with the times and market needs. Through this program, students will be equipped with comprehensive competencies in manufacturing technology. Dr. Hammar also explained that the D4 Manufacturing Engineering Technology Study Program has been accredited by the Technical Education Accreditation Board (LAM Teknik).

“The D4 Manufacturing Engineering Technology Study Program covers fundamentals similar to those in mechanical engineering programs in the first and second semesters, but we emphasize that students understand the manufacturing process. For example, creating innovations that can add value to a product,” Dr. Hammar said.

He added that UNS is one of the universities equipped with industry-standard 3D scanning equipment. “We also have industry-standard CNC milling machines, so graduating students need not worry because the equipment in our laboratories is comparable to those in the industry,” he added.

Dr. Hammar further explained that the D4 Manufacturing Engineering Technology Study Program teaches the basics of machinery, including how to design, calculate, operate, and control the quality of manufacturing processes. Thus, students become proficient in the entire manufacturing process, from start to finish. Students also receive national and international certifications that can be beneficial in the future.

“We have collaborated with national and international industrial companies. Hence, there are ample opportunities for careers both domestically and internationally because many of our alumni have been accepted there. The program also plans for three semesters of internships so that students have portfolios and experience upon graduation,” Dr. Hammar added.

D4 Mandarin Language for Business and Professional Communication

The D4 Mandarin Language for Business and Professional Communication Study Program is an upgrade from the D3 Mandarin Language Program. This enhancement aims to increase the value and competency of its graduates, focusing on business and industry.

Kristina Indah S.R, B.Ed., M.TCSOL, the Head of the D4 Mandarin Language for Business and Professional Communication Program, explained that the program focuses 70% on direct practice through industrial lectures or internships, making it significantly different from the Literature Study Program.

“Students will be equipped with Mandarin for daily communication, which will then be developed for business and industrial communication. Industrial internships are also provided to develop language skills and terminology directly in the industrial world. Students also acquire translation skills according to standards, as well as administrative skills in both Indonesian and Mandarin. Therefore, graduates of this program can fill various positions in companies,” Kristina explained.

She added that the D4 Mandarin Language for Business and Professional Communication Study Program has collaborated with many Chinese and Taiwanese foreign investment companies, providing significant opportunities for graduates to pursue careers in those companies.

The service program for MSMEs in Baluwarti is chaired by Endang Martini S.Pd., M.Sc., along with lecturers and students of the D3 Finance and Banking Study Program, SV UNS. Endang Martini conveyed that this dedication aims to make MSME participants literate, both in understanding and knowledge about financial institutions that are official and recognized by the OJK and related to business capital, namely bank credit.

“The rise of illegal online loans has moved us to educate about bank credit so that we can improve business and prosperity for business actors, in this case MSMEs in Baluwarti. MSMEs must get the right education so they can choose a trusted financial institution that is recognized by financial institutions in Indonesia, the OJK,” she said.

The PKM HRG Team of the D3 Finance and Banking Study Program SV UNS hopes that by holding this financial institution literacy program, MSMEs can be free from illegal online loans and be educated in the financial sector.

Susana Dwi Kusumaningrum from OJK explained the importance of education and awareness in financial management, especially those related to trusted and recognized financial institutions supervised by OJK.

 “Currently there are many financial institutions that offer convenience in obtaining financial loans. This should be a warning for anyone so that unwanted things don’t happen. One of them is because there are financial institutions that are illegal and financial crimes are rampant in the digital era,” Susana said.

Susana added that there are things that must be done when applying for an online loan. “There are things to watch out for when applying for an online loan. They are checking the legality of online loans, fees charged, complete online loan identity, borrowing for productive needs, being thorough and understanding the terms and conditions, borrowing according to ability, checking access that can be accessed by online loans, and don’t dig holes to close holes, which means don’t make online loans to cover other loans,” she continued.

The OJK provided advice related to the question of how to get capitalization without complicated requirements, that is, you can apply to the OJK and then you will be given easy and cheap financing. However the plafond is not too large or just under IDR five million. Surely we have to apply the careful precautionary principle.

The second session was provided by the Credit Analyst Section of Bank Jateng KCK Surakarta, who explained the things that MSMEs need to do before accessing capital. There are calculating needs based on business plans, getting to know various types of access to capital, calculating assets and company value for negotiation, discussing details of agreements with potential investors, and evaluating the cost of capital.

Debtors who have borrowed from financial institutions and have bad credit installment report cards will find it difficult to get more capital. It is due to the fact that they have been assessed as debtors who do not have good faith. MSMEs can apply for Microenterprise Credit (KUR) according to their willingness and use it for business capital with one of the conditions, namely a minimum age of 21 years old and a maximum age of repayment of 65 years old.

For online businesses, they can apply for a loan if there is business stock. Meanwhile the financial reports can be seen from the financial transactions that occur in the online shop. MSMEs can make repayments on their loans after they have money, namely by applying for seasonal credit. This credit is usually repaid within six months of the loan. For KUR there is no penalty if repayment is made earlier than the credit agreement.

Dr. Eng. Herman Saputro said that the signing of the MoU was an effort to strengthen and optimize cooperation programs in order to improve quality, both for institutions, students and graduates.

“Collaboration is not only limited to universities at domestic and overseas as the implementation of the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi, but also extended to the Business and Industrial World (DUDI). The cooperation between UNS and PT Sriboga is not only limited to the signing of the MoU. However, we can work together more through curriculum development and joint projects,” he said.

Meanwhile, Prof. Sajidan added that through this collaboration, SV UNS is expected to be able to build links and match in industry so that it can support Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) activities, industrial internships, field work lectures, research and joint business.

 “In the end, this link and match aims to develop superior and competitive human resource capabilities. We create graduate human resources that meet industry needs and we invite DUDI to join in the cooking, it’s like cooking, we process the menu together,” he said in his speech.

Furthermore, he said that UNS is ready to accept joint research from upstream and downstream. This upstream research is supported by the availability of agricultural land which is quite large in the Forest Area with a Special Purpose (KHDTK) of Mount Bromo UNS covering an area of 126,291 ha with an altitude of 200-325 masl which can be used for the development of porang plants. Furthermore, downstream research can be carried out by developing products from porang flour which are studied with substitution potential, namely examining quality, nutrition, and taste.

The implementation of the SV UNS collaboration with PT Sriboga Flour Mill can be carried out by the D-3 Agribusiness Study Program (Prodi) and D-3 Study Program in Food Product Technology in realizing Indonesian products that are superior and able to compete in the market.

Commercial General Manager of PT Sriboga Flour Mill, Rike Sundari, M.B.A. hopes that the signing of this cooperation will be a good start to increase cooperation in the academic field, namely through sending student internships also research and community service.

 “Company like PT Sriboga Flour Mill needs a synergistic relationship with universities such as the Vocational School UNS. In this case, we need assistance from a research institute so that the fulfillment of flour does not depend on wheat. Previously, we had worked with MSME noodles in substituting wheat flour with porang flour to produce good noodles. However, scientific and measurable research has not been carried out, so in-depth research is needed,” Rike Sundari said. Humas UNS
