This Community Service Program (PKM), supported by a grant from the Directorate of Research, Technology, and Community Service (DRTPM) for the 2024 Fiscal Year, focuses on optimizing household yards. The initiative aims to develop a sustainable food area within the Nusukan community.

Three research groups were involved in the project: the RG for Indigenous Psychology from the Faculty of Psychology (Fapsi), led by Dr. Tri Rejeki Andayani, S.Psi., M.Si.; the RG for Agricultural Communication from the Faculty of Agriculture (FP), headed by Dr. Dwiningtyas Padmaningrum, S.P., M.Si.; and the RG for Economics and Rural Development, also from FP, led by Dr. Umi Barokah, S.P., M.P.

“PKM partnered with KWT Surya Alam RW 14, located on Jalan Majapahit I, Nayu Barat RT 08/RW 14, Nusukan, Banjarsari, Surakarta. Funding was provided by DRTPM for the 2024 Fiscal Year,” Dr. Tri Rejeki Andayani explained on Thursday (12/12/2024).

The program included several activities, such as socialization sessions, training, and hands-on planting practices. It also involved Kans.id and UNS students participating in the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) initiative. The program ran from August to October 2024.

Members of KWT Surya Alam had the opportunity to learn more about various types of plant seeds. Following this, the UNS team conducted hands-on planting sessions in household yards. The participants showed great enthusiasm during these activities, which began with planting seeds to grow into new seedlings.

They also experimented with planting ready-to-grow seeds that were provided. The UNS team introduced the characteristics of each type of seedling. The planting medium used was soil placed in small polybags. Seedlings with longer growth periods were then transferred to larger pots. Participants also learned proper techniques for caring for these plants.

Seedlings were arranged on multi-tiered racks to optimize yard space utilization. Additionally, UNS and KWT Surya Alam collaborated on replanting efforts to rejuvenate crops by replacing old, harvested plants with new seedlings.

At the program’s conclusion, activities were monitored and evaluated by internal reviewer Dr. Edi Kurniadi, M.Pd., and external reviewer Dr. Sunardi, S.Si., M.Si. The results demonstrated excellent outcomes, with healthy, thriving, and fruitful plants. KWT members highlighted the program’s significant benefits, such as improved access to plant-based nutrition and stronger community bonds fostered by shared activities.

This initiative supports UNS in achieving four Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Good Health and Well-Being (SDG 3), and Life on Land (SDG 15). Humas UNS

The first day of the program was attended by more than 100 participants consisting of lecturers and students of the Science Education Study Program FKIP UNS. The event started with remarks from the Head of the Science Education Study Program (Kaprodi) FKIP UNS, Dr. paed. Nurma Yunita Indriyanti, M.Sc., M.Sc. Following the welcome remark was the opening speech from the Vice-Dean for Academic, Research, and Student Affairs FKIP UNS, Prof. Dr. Slamet Subiyantoro, M.Sc., which at the same time opened the event symbolically.

Starting her presentation, Dr. Hobbs delivers material covering STEM in Australia, Why STEM? Framing STEM (What is It?), Approaches to STEM in Schools, STEM Teaching and Learning, Doing STEM, and What Have We Learned So Far about How to Implement STEM Well? Next, Dr. Hobbs also provides activities for students to apply STEM in groups, to design a nature-inspired technology.

On the second day, Dr. Hobbs continued her material on STEM implementation in Indonesia – how does it compare to Australia? Planning for STEM Learning and Assessment, Looking for Construction of New Practices and Beliefs, Key Pillars for Successful and Sustainable, STEM Programs in Schools, and Final Messages about Making STEM Education Work. After the material presentation, the event continued with a question and answer session. Some of the attending lecturers and students are interested in discussing with Dr. Hobbs about STEM and its application in schools. The event led by Bayu Antrakusuma, M.Pd., as moderator, went smoothly to the end of the event.

This Visiting Professor Program is expected to strengthen the Science Education Study Program FKIP UNS academic members’ knowledge of STEM. As a Lecturer of the Science Education Study Program, Bayu hopes that this activity can prepare FKIP students, as prospective teachers, to implement STEM in their schools.

The visit from local governments in Central Java Province was welcomed by the Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, Business, and Information Affairs UNS Prof. Sajidan, Dean of FISIP UNS Prof. Ismi Dwi Astuti Nurhaeni, and the Head of Master Program in Communication Science Postgraduate School UNS Dr. Andre N. Rahmanto.

In his opening remark before opening the assessment, Prof. Sajidan stated that information disclosure in the reformation era is a need and responsibility for state administrators because people want to be involved in every policy-making process and demand accountable and transparent government according to the good governance principles.

“Moreover, the modernization of Information Technology and communication that provides freedom for people to get any information they want easily and rapidly,” he stated.

Therefore, Prof. Sajidan considers that government, institutes, and public agencies need to open themselves to the community and provide information surrounding their policies openly and accessible for people. Although, on the one hand, information openness is often abused for certain interests, Prof. Sajidan stated that technology modernization should be used as a momentum for the government to take strategic policies.

“This mandate encourages all public agencies in Indonesia, including public universities, to apply public information disclosure. This is an implementation of Law No. 14/ 2008 on Public Information Disclosure,” Prof. Sajidan explained.

The Commissioner of Provincial Information Commission (KIP) of Central Java Province, Ermy Sri Ardhyanti, explained in her speech that the assessment was held to provide a transparent perspective on public information for the community. In the two-days assessment, 15 districts/municipalities, 14 public hospitals at district/municipality and province/central region, and 29 provincial units at Central Java Province will be examined. KIP of Central Java will assess and classify the local government or public agencies into informative, moving to informative, quite informative, lack of informativeness, and not informative. Ermy Sri Ardhyanti mentioned that this public assessment had been held since 2014, and she hoped that this assessment could improve information transparency management by all local governments and public agencies in Central Java Province.

“Fifty-eight public agencies have passed the selection process wince May 2021. Including website check and social media managed (by the agencies). This public assessment is the fourth stage, and those who participate in this assessment are public agencies with a score higher than 80,” Ermy explained. Humas UNS

The defense was held on Monday (22/11/2021), with Prof. Ravik Karsidi as promotor, Prof. Mahendra Wijaya as Co Promotor 1, and Prahastiwi Utari, Ph.D. as Co Promotor 2. The board of examiners was led by Prof. Ahmad Yunus, Prof. Ismi Dwi Astuti Nurhaeni as secretary, and Prof. Suwarto, Prof. Pawito, Dr. Andre Rahmanto, as members.

In her dissertation, Emi suggested to the agricultural extension officers to provide communication technology literacy to ensure that farmers have the millennials’ and progressive farmers’ communication identity. Communication technology literacy has an impact on the social changes recorded in human history.

“Social structure becomes a process that shapes stereotypes negotiated in determining competences through the competence formation,” Emi explained.

As reported in https://s3ilkom.fisip.uns.ac.id, Emi stated that negotiation of millennials and progressive farmers identity contains a perspective on technology, social, cultural, and environmental transfer. Emi also found that competence, courage to motivate other farmers, culture, and environmental supports in millennial farmers make them good agricultural extension officers for other farmers. The existing identity negotiation and communication caused by the current condition faced by farmers, in which their profession was threatened by newly developed professions in the urban regions.

Emi added that farmers need competence improvement in communication skills to explain that their profession is a professional occupation in the community structure. To support the communication skills of farmers, the role of agricultural extension officers is needed to deliver materials on communication and agricultural management. At the end of her defense, Emi added that mother and wife are the main driving force for millennials and progressive farmers in their negotiation of communication identity. Humas UNS

The event held on Friday (30/7/2021) was a form of follow-up of the partnership between FMIPA UNS and AAU. The discussants are FMIPA students from various programs interested in aerospace technology, robotics, and electronics.

In this event, Dr. Hendri stated that wide opportunities were open to developing military technology in Indonesia, for example, Network Centric Warfare, Cloud Computing, Robotic, Cyber Security, GPS Satellite, Communication Network, and other related technologies. These opportunities open chances for students to pursue a career in the military and aerospace fields.

Dr. Hendri also stated that UNS as a leading university and AAU could collaborate to answer the aerospace and military technology development challenges in Indonesia.

“Because each of us has similar objectives on how to align and build the nation. Hopefully, UNS and AAU could build stronger collaboration,” he added.

The Major also explained that the development of Alustita (Alat Utama Sistem Senjata Tentara Nasional Indonesia) (Indonesian Army weaponry system) is not limited to warfare but also as diplomacy and supporting equipment in disaster mitigation and terrorism control.

The Dean of FMIPA UNS, Drs. Harjana, M.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., expressed gratitude to Dr. Hendri for sharing knowledge in the discussion.
