UNS—Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has secured a spot among the top 10 universities in Indonesia according to the Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings 2025. This accomplishment marks UNS’s latest achievement in international university rankings in 2025.

This year, UNS also attained a global spot within the 301–400 range and ranks 6th nationally among all participating Indonesian universities. This placement shows UNS’s ongoing efforts to build a university environment responsive to environmental, social, and economic issues.

The Director of the Directorate of Planning, Cooperation, Internationalization, and Reputation at UNS, Ibrahim Fatwa Wijaya, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., conveyed on Wednesday (18/6/2025) that UNS has shown significant improvement compared to the previous year. “Globally, UNS experienced a remarkable rise. In 2024, we were in the 601–800 global ranking range. This year, we have successfully advanced to the 301–400 range. This leap deserves appreciation,” he stated.

What is the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings?

Ibrahim further explained that the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings is a global ranking system that evaluates universities based on their commitment to sustainable development. The ranking uses the indicators derived from the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition, in 2025, 2,526 universities from 130 countries participated in this ranking.

Moreover, the ranking assesses university performance across four main pillars: research, stewardship, outreach, and education. These pillars are evaluated based on how well universities contribute to achieving the 17 SDGs established by the United Nations.

The Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings conducts the evaluation process rigorously and systematically. The rankings apply three types of indicators: bibliometric data, sustainability metrics, and policy-based evidence. The data are collected from research outcomes, community service activities, and institutional policies.

For bibliometric indicators, THE Impact Rankings 2025 applies a five-year assessment window. Each indicator must align with the SDG theme to ensure balanced institution comparisons.

UNS’s ranking results indicate its strong commitment to sustainable development. UNS, which is also known as the Fortress of Pancasila, continues to integrate sustainability principles into its academic and non-academic programs. This dedication shows UNS’s research initiatives, community empowerment, and strategic partnerships.

The assessment category used by Times Higher Education

In the overall evaluation, Times Higher Education calculates each university’s final score based on SDG 17 and the university’s three highest-scoring SDGs. SDG 17 comprises 22% of the total, while the other three comprise 26%. Finally, the final score is the average of the last two years.

In 2025, four SDG categories contribute most significantly to UNS’s overall score. Those four SDGs are SDG 2, SDG 9, and SDG 8, with the highest scores, and SDG 17, as the main category.

On SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), UNS scored 83.6. This score makes UNS secure 29th globally in this category. This category assesses the university’s contribution to ending hunger, increasing food security, and supporting sustainable agriculture.

Furthermore, on SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), UNS obtained a score ranging from 80.7 to 92.3. This indicator assesses the university’s efforts in building sustainable infrastructure, encouraging inclusive industrialization, and facilitating innovation.

UNS also recorded a high score of 75.6 on SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). This score makes UNS rank 86th globally for SDG 8. This assessment considers the role of universities in creating decent jobs and encouraging sustainable economic growth.

Then, on SDG 17, Partnership for the Goals, UNS got a score ranging from 81.8 to 86.5. This SDG assesses the strength of the university’s strategic partnerships in supporting various global development programs collaboratively.

The Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings have become an essential reference point for universities worldwide in measuring their global impact. Through these rankings, institutions can measure their contributions to addressing global challenges. In addition, the system encourages continuous improvement in the quality of education, research, and community service.

This accomplishment also serves as a motivation for UNS to strengthen its global contributions. Through cross-sector collaboration, UNS remains committed to supporting the achievement of sustainable development goals. Its success in the 2025 Impact Rankings is tangible evidence of the university’s vision to become a research-based institution that delivers meaningful social impact.

“In the future, UNS will continue expanding partnerships, strengthening applied research, and enhancing the quality of educational services. We hope these efforts will elevate UNS’s position in global rankings,” Ibrahim concluded.

Humas UNS
