UNS — Angger Wicaksana, a student from the Occupational Health and Safety (K3) Program at the Vocational School of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, won first place in the International Essay Competition (IEC) held as part of the 18th Dentistry Scientific Meeting (DSM) by the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG), Universitas Indonesia (UI). He received the award during the event’s peak session held offline on Sunday (10/11/2024) at the 5th Floor of the Sarinah Thamrin Building, Central Jakarta.

In his essay, Angger proposed an innovative biodegradable urine test strip made from nanochitin derived from shrimp shell waste for the early detection of diabetes mellitus. This innovation offers a non-invasive, affordable, and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional blood-sample-based diabetes detection methods.

“The idea came from the high prevalence of diabetes in Indonesia and the underutilized potential of shrimp shell waste. Nanochitin was chosen due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and high surface area, making it ideal for biosensor development,” Angger explained to uns.ac.id on Thursday (21/11/2024).

Angger’s preparation for the competition was extensive and self-driven. He conducted comprehensive literature research, delving into the properties and potential of nanochitin, studying the epidemiology and pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus, and analyzing existing early detection methods.

“I also thoroughly reviewed the IEC guidelines to ensure my essay met all requirements, including the evaluation criteria. Writing the essay required significant time and dedication, from drafting the outline, writing the initial draft, and revising multiple times, to final editing to ensure clarity, coherence, and accuracy of the information. One of the biggest challenges was presenting complex scientific concepts in clear and straightforward language understandable to a general audience,” Angger elaborated.

The IEC, an annual event hosted by FKG UI, serves as a competitive platform for active diploma and undergraduate students across health science disciplines in state and private universities. This year’s theme, “Interdisciplinary Approaches to Health Preservation,” encouraged participants to develop innovative and integrated solutions from various disciplines to enhance public health.

“My essay’s innovation aims to raise awareness and increase community participation in diabetes screening, especially for those with limited access to healthcare facilities,” Angger hoped.

After being declared the first-place winner, Angger emphasized that this achievement is not an endpoint but a starting point for further innovation and sustainable contributions. He believes perseverance, hard work, and an unwavering spirit are essential foundations for success.

“Winning this competition is truly an honor and a source of pride. I hope it inspires young people, especially fellow students, to explore their potential, sharpen their creativity, and transform brilliant ideas into tangible solutions. Belief in oneself and the courage to drive positive change are catalysts that will lead us to our aspirations,” Angger added.

Angger’s innovation promotes healthy lifestyles and well-being for all ages, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #3: Good Health and Well-Being.

UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta hosted the National Seminar as a preliminary event for the International Conference on “Humanitarian Islam and Global Challenges,” in collaboration with Pengurus Besar Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) and Universitas Indonesia (UI). The event took place in person at the 3rd Floor Ballroom of Ki Hadjar Dewantara Tower UNS on Wednesday (11/9/2024).

This event was motivated by the increasingly uncertain and complex global situation, marked by major challenges such as racism, extremism, conflicts, wars, and global injustices that threaten stability and humanity. The dominance of secularism and neoliberalism has driven the world into an unending crisis. However, the growing role of religion is guiding the world towards a new balance, and Humanitarian Islam offers a framework to strengthen this emerging equilibrium.

Present at the seminar were the Chairman of PBNU, KH. Dr. Yahya Cholil Staquf; Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si.; and the Director General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Abdul Haris, M.Sc., who also participated online.

In his keynote speech, PBNU Chairman KH. Dr. Yahya Cholil Staquf emphasized that Humanitarian Islam highlights the humanitarian aspects of Islamic teachings. Fundamental principles such as justice, welfare, kindness, and compassion form the basis for responding to the various crises facing the world today.

“In addressing radicalism and racism that have emerged in recent times, Humanitarian Islam offers a non-violent approach that encourages dialogue and mutual respect among religions and cultures while being critical of the excessive tendencies of liberalism. Humanitarian Islam provides a religious foundation and perspective based on universal values that transcend ideology and identity,” KH. Yahya explained.

In collaboration with UI and UNS, PBNU contributes to the discourse and efforts surrounding Humanitarian Islam, aiming to foster global peace and justice through Islamic teachings and local ethics.

Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., remarked in his remarks that this seminar is a golden opportunity to delve deeper into how Islam, a religion that promotes mercy for all, can offer concrete solutions to modern humanitarian challenges.

“Hopefully, today’s discussion will not only focus on theories and concepts but also yield practical recommendations that can be implemented. We all share the responsibility of bringing the humanitarian values of Islam into real action, both within academic environments and on a broader, global scale,” Prof. Hartono said.

The seminar featured notable speakers, including the Rector of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, Prof. Noorhaidi Hasan, Ph.D.; Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs and Professor of Mechanical Engineering at UNS, Prof. Ir.
UNS — The Rector of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho, shared the materials on UNS as Pancasila Vanguard Initiator in the Webinar on Place of Worship in University as an Inter-religion Communication Means and Student Character Education held by the Alumni Association (Iluni) of Universitas Indonesia (UI), Saturday (5/3/2022).

Prof. Jamal explained that six place of worships in UNS aims to represents the diversity of Indonesians and to build unity in UNS.

“Campus is a miniature of Indonesia with diverse members from various social, cultural, religiousity, and ethnicity background. Therefore, campus is expected to represent this diversity to strengthen the nationalism commitment from religious point of view,” Prof. Jamal stated.

“The six places of worship are located in close proximity to create harmony in diversity. This builds respects towards other’s belief, to be tolerant, and work together in maintaining religious harmony, especially in UNS,” Prof. Jamal stated.

The construction of six places of worship, according to Prof. Jamal explanation, has been a part of initial plan in UNS development.
