UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta started a partnership with Bangor University, UK, in an effort to improve UNS networking with global universities. The agreement for collaboration was signed by both universities on Monday (22/11/2021) and will provide an opportunity for UNS students to participate in the abroad program at Bangor University.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, S.H., M.Hum., Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, Business, and Information Affairs UNS, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Sajidan, M.Si., the Director of International Operation and Admission Bangor University, Mr. Sam Jackson-Royle, and the Dean of Business School Bangor University, Prof. Bruce Vanstone.

In his opening remark, Prof. Jamal thanked Bangor University for the collaboration between the two universities. He mentioned that partnership with global universities is vital, especially in improving UNS educational quality to meet international standards.

“It is an honor for us to have a partnership with Bangor University, UK. A university with strong research and innovation,” Prof. Jamal stated.

The agreement for partnership will also open a great opportunity for collaboration of research between the two higher education institutions that will expand and improve UNS scientific research. UNS greatly appreciated the opportunity to collaborate with Bangor University, and Prof. Jamal hoped that there would be a stronger and longer collaboration with Bangor University.

Sam Jackson-Royle emphasized that institutional partnership always plays an important part for Bangor University because it is related to the improvement in the academic excellence of a university. He also explained that Bangor University’s research competence had been used to contribute to the economic, social, and cultural sectors. Both universities, according to him, need to walk together to be focused on shaping graduates with optimum skills that are expected to affect both the graduates and their surrounding environment.

“We hoped to welcome students from UNS and staff to enjoy (our university) and to welcome (their) participation in the mobility program,” Sam Jackson-Royle stated. Humas UNS

UNS — Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta welcomed a visit from three universities on Thursday (18/11/2021). The three universities are Universitas Mataram (Unram), Universitas Borneo Tarakan (UBT), and Universitas Negeri Malang (UM).

The welcoming ceremony was opened by Vice-Dean for Academic, Research, and Student Affairs FKIP UNS, Prof. Slamet Subiyantoro, who hoped that the program could provide a source of improvements for universities in the future. “This program is expected not only to develop partnership but also improvements for universities in the future,” Prof. Slamet stated. The ceremony was then officially opened by the Dean of FKIP UNS, Dr. Mardiyana, M.Si., who thanked the three visiting universities for coming to FKIP UNS. “It is a great pleasure for us that you could come to learn together, especially Unram and UBT that are still in one FKIP forum,” he stated.

The visit was divided into three different forums according to the topic of the visit by each visiting university. UBT discussed the implementation of Pre-school Environment (PLP), Unram discussed the collaboration in establishing Doctoral Program in Natural Science education, and UM discussed the benchmark between UNS and UM. The program was opened with sharing of FKIP UNS profile, organizational structure, the target of Key Performance Indicators (IKU) 2021-2024, faculty accreditation, programs certification plan, and FKIP contribution in the National Science Week (Pimnas) 2021 by Dr. Mardiyana. In this sharing, Dr. Mardiyana also shared his wish that all programs in FKIP UNS will have a professional assessment scheme so that all graduates will have a bachelor certificate, bachelor certificate supplement (SKPI), and professional certification.

Following the sharing from the Dean of FKIP UNS, UBT stated in the discussion forum that their visit aims to perform a comparative study in PLP implementation. The team was led by Winarno, S.Pd., M.Pd., and Ni Made Diah Padmi, S.Pd., M.Pd, and Riska Febriani, S.E., as members then participated in the Workshop in Evaluation on the Implementation of School Environment Introduction (PLP) held by UP2KT FKIP UNS in Building F FKIP UNS 3rd floor Hall that was attended by partners school headmasters.

The Head of Doctoral Program in Natural Science Education UNS, Prof. Sulistyo Saputro, M.Si, Ph.D., continued the discussion on the opening of a similar program in Unram and collaboration between Unram and FKIP UNS with Prof. Agus Ramdani from Unram. In the discussion, Prof. Sulis shared the management of his Doctoral Program starting from the profile, faculty members, alumni, development plans, research track record, and the steps to achieve its vision to be an excellent program at the international level by 2024. These steps include inviting guest lecturers, conducting an international conference, and inviting visiting professors from other countries and Indonesia.

“Alhamdulillah, working towards 2024, some programs to achieve the vision to excel at the international level have been implemented well. This is proved by applicants in the Doctoral Program in Natural Science Education from abroad. Yesterday, I was contacted by International Office that there are applicants from abroad. It is a pride that UNS internationalization could increase the interest towards our program,” Prof. Sulis stated.

Responding to the sharing from Prof. Sulis, Prof. Agus as a representative from Unram shared his progress in the development of their new Doctoral Program. Unram had conducted an assessment on 16 November and had received a permit to open the program.

“After the assessment, there is a big homework regarding the facilities and infrastructure that need to be completed in the next two weeks. Frankly, we do not know that independent study facilities are the main requirement in the opening of this new program. Because UNS had received an operational permit earlier, we visit UNS to learn about the matter,” he explained.

The program was closed with a signing of collaboration agreement between FKIP UNS and Unram and the exchange of tokens of appreciation. Humas UNS

UNS — The President of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) Joko Widodo (Jokowi), asked public universities not to limit their student’s ability because the pandemic has pushed great technology transformation. This reminder was delivered by the President on the opening of the Council of Rector of Indonesian State University (CRISU) meeting held in the Faculty of Medical Science (FK) Hall Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta on Monday (13/9/2021).

The President also mentioned that the pandemic had created uncertain conditions in the community, and university students are demanded to be adaptable and innovative in adjusting to the newest technology trend. Therefore, the universities need to facilitate their students in developing their talents and change the old patterns. “Don’t limit your students with the existing programs in the faculties. I already reminded, and I will continue to remind (you),” President Jokowi stated.

He also emphasized that universities should provide opportunities for their students to learn new knowledge outside their programs. The President stated that at some point, university students might felt that their program is not a match for them and hopes that students could pursue careers according to students’ individual talents. He mentioned that students’ selection on their program and faculty often is not based on their talents, and they will feel it once they are studying. “We know that people could have careers far from their bachelor diploma. I often use Budy Gunadi Sadikin as an example. In ITB, he studies Nuclear Physics, but work in a bank and become the President Director of Bank Mandiri and Minister of Health,” President Jokowi said.

Therefore, he asked the rectors of the public universities to give freedom for their students to learn. In the future, university graduates are predicted to work in a professional career, and the President hopes students could use the freedom in learning to learn something outside their programs and university, especially in terms of technology and language. “Truly unexpected changes pushed by the pandemic that demands us to enter the transition quickly and start to adapt with this kind of thing. We need to get prepared to learn again,” President Jokowi stated.

Rector’s Responsibilities do not Stop at in Campus Education

In his opening remark, the President mentioned that a rector’s duty is not only teaching their student in the campus, but they are also responsible for teaching students outside the campus. The President wants that rectors do not only share their knowledge in the classroom and let their students get used to monotonous activities. He added that teachers should be honest with their students that learning materials will continue to change and do not let students learning outdated materials. President Jokowi also emphasized that public university rectors need to shape leading and well-behaved students who will not have contradictory actions inside and outside the campus.

“University has a task to shape and create students that are leading and well-behaved, healthy physically and mentally, have good manner, and nationalism. (If students) become a drugs addict outside the campus, what’s for? If we could not teach (students). On the campus (they) learn about Pancasila and civil education, but outside the campus, they become extremist. What’s for? So lastly, the responsibility of a rector lies inside and outside their campus,” the President explained.

The visit to UNS is the last agenda in the President’s visit to Central Java Province. The Presdient attended CRISU meeting with the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Mendikbudristek) RI Nadiem Makarim, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo, and Surakarta Major Gibran Rakabuming Raka. The President was welcomed directly by the Chairman of CRISU and Rector of UNS, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho, and the Coordinating Minister of Human Resource Development and Culture (PMK) RI, Prof. Muhadjir Effendy. Humas UNS

UNS — The Rector of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, S.H., M.Hum., stated that universities have a strategic role in national development in National Workshop Nasional UI GreenMetric 2021 on 28–29 July 2021.

“Without doubt, universities with its Tri Dharma, education, research, and community services have strategic role and contribution in assisting the government who is currently accelerating national development,” Prof. Jamal explained on Thursday (29/7/2021).

The workshop was held on the “Universities, UI GreenMetric, and SDGs in the Time of Pandemic” theme. Prof. Jamal Wiwoho stated the three key points in the theme, the role of higher education, UI GreenMetric, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Rector also reminded participants that the development role bear by universities does not stop at the academic interest, but also for the community interests. The campus should become a center for excellence according to its key competencies. Additionally, the campus should also mainstream SDGs in its education and learning process, act as the government’s partners at the local and national level, and become stakeholders in supervising and evaluating policies implementation.

Indonesian campuses also could take examples from four Australian universities experiences in sustainable development solution network (SDSN) in achieving SDGs. These universities are Monash University, Macquarie University, Victoria University, and the University of Technology Sidney.

“We consider that this workshop has a highly strategic function in strengthening campus’ commitment to collaborate through building collective internal capacities and develop a sense of ownership on SDGs,” Prof. Jamal stated.

Prof. Jamal gave an example of UNS, which is known as an environmentally friendly campus with its “Green Campus” spirit that affects its development and research programs. This spirit is also implemented in research that strengthens the support for new and renewable energy sources development and expedites the energy transition into a more environmentally friendly energy source.

“The challenge for UI GreenMetric as a ranking institution is how the six aspects in UI GreenMetric can be an example of integrating science into all managerial and practical aspects of sustainable development,” Prof. Jamal explained. Humas UNS
