UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta proudly celebrates the achievements of one of its distinguished alumni. Ratih Kumala is a graduate of the English Department at the Faculty of Cultural Studies (FIB) UNS, class of 1999. She has gained national recognition in the world of Indonesian literature. More than a prolific author, she is an inspiring figure who proves that passion and perseverance lead to lasting success.

Discipline and Consistency: Keys to Literary Success

Renowned Indonesian author Ratih Kumala wrote the acclaimed novels Tabula Rasa and Gadis Kretek. She recently shared her journey in an interview with uns.ac.id on Monday (21/4/2025). She discussed her literary projects and the process that fuels her creativity.

“I’m working on several projects. Two film scripts are in progress, along with a novel that—God willing—will be published this year. I’m also writing a nonfiction book on writing, which I hope to complete next year,” she shared enthusiastically.

Despite juggling multiple genres, Ratih finds it easy to shift between projects. “Maybe it’s because I’ve been writing for a long time. My brain has adapted to switching quickly,” she explained.

She emphasized that running out of ideas is never the issue. “Inspiration can come from anywhere. What concerns me is whether I have the time to write them all. That’s why writers must become curators—choosing which ideas are worth the time, money, and effort,” she said.

For aspiring writers, Ratih believes the foundation of success lies in discipline and consistency. “It may sound cliché, but these two things are essential. Writing in Indonesia is not always financially sustainable. Many writers take on additional jobs, and that’s okay. What matters most is staying consistent,” she stated.

A Strong Beginning in the World of Literature

Ratih’s passion for writing began during her university years. She joined the Rumah Baca Bumi Manusia, a literary community established by UNS students. This experience played a crucial role in shaping her love for literature.

“I started writing as a hobby. Thanks to my friends’ encouragement, I began taking it seriously. I wrote short stories, moved to novels, and entered competitions. Winning the Jakarta Arts Council Novel Competition in 2003 with Tabula Rasa was a turning point,” she recalled.

The award brought recognition to her. It helped her gain attention from Indonesia’s literary legends, including Sapardi Djoko Damono and Budi Darma. Both served as judges in the competition.

“I joined the competition hoping experienced writers would read my work. Mr. Sapardi, Mr. Budi Darma, and Mr. Maman S. Mahayana were the judges. They selected my novel as a winner. I felt thrilled. Interestingly, most winners that year were women. Mr. Sapardi even said that the future of Indonesian literature belongs to women,” she added.

That statement motivated Ratih to continue. She faced the sastrawangi label—a term used by some male writers to stereotype female authors.

Advocating for Women and Literature

Coinciding with Kartini Day, Ratih shared a message of encouragement for today’s women. “Women can now pursue their dreams freely. They can speak up and express themselves. Compared to the past, today offers more opportunities—so use them,” she urged.

Currently, Ratih also serves on the Literary Promotion Board at the Ministry of Culture. In this role, she promotes Indonesian literature on a global scale. “We are preparing for the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair. It’s one of our steps to introduce Indonesian literature to the world,” she explained.

Ratih highlighted that promoting literature involves more than just publishing books. “It includes translating works and connecting local writers with international readers. Literature reflects our culture. It’s a gateway to show who we are,” she emphasized.

A Proud UNS Alumna

Looking back on her journey, Ratih expressed gratitude for her time at UNS. “At first, I didn’t choose UNS because of literature—I simply loved English. Since I lived in Solo, UNS was the best option,” she said.

She wasn’t initially drawn to literature. However, her time at UNS and the support from her literary community shaped her into the writer she is today. “To fellow UNS alumni—whatever profession you pursue, carry the UNS name proudly. Let’s continue making our alma mater proud,” she concluded.

Ratih Kumala’s story proves that with passion, discipline, and resilience, success is possible. She remains a shining example for young Indonesian writers and a proud ambassador for UNS on the national stage.

Dr. Budi arrived at FISIP UNS and received a warm welcome from the Dean of FISIP UNS, Dr. Didik Gunawan Suharto, and the vice deans. He planted a tree as part of the ceremony. He also launched the FISIP Alumni Association Office (Kafisip). Lastly, he delivered an Inspirational Talk during a national seminar.

Tree Planting Ceremony

Dr. Budi began his visit by planting an agarwood tree (Aquilaria malaccensis) in front of the M. Sartono Building. Assisted by the student nature conservation group, MAHAFISIPPA, Dr. Budi demonstrated his commitment to environmental sustainability. This activity also strengthened his bond with his alma mater.

Launching of Kafisip

After planting the tree, Dr. Budi inaugurated the FISIP Alumni Association Office (Kafisip). The FISIP Alumni Association placed the office on the second floor of the M. Sartono Building. The ceremony included a signing session and a ribbon-cutting event. This initiative aims to foster collaboration between the faculty and its alumni, offering opportunities for internships, certifications, and scholarships.

“The launching of Kafisip is a strategic step to build a strong network between the alma mater and its alumni. Through this platform, we hope to create more targeted programs and support the career development of FISIP graduates,” Dr. Didik said.

UNS — Boeing’s international aircraft company took part in a guest lecture hosted by Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta on Tuesday (8/3/2022). The aircraft company giant revealed its predictions about international and Indonesian aviation trends through the Zoom Cloud Meetings platform.

In this event, Boeing was represented by Gregg Gildemann, Regional Director Market Analysis, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. In addition, there was Veronika W.R. Andrews, UNS alumnus, who currently serves as Project Manager at Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, Business, and Information Affairs UNS, Prof. Dr. rer.nat Sajidan also attended the event hosted by UNS Fintech Center.

“Thank you for Mrs. Veronika’s help in making this event possible. We are very fortunate to have this event. We hope Boeing can explain to the participants the current condition of the aviation industry and career opportunities in the aviation world considering that currently, Boeing has just opened an office in Jakarta,” said Prof. Sajidan.

This event is one of the agenda for the UNS 46th Anniversary held on March 11. This guest lecture is specifically carried out to give a clear understanding to the UNS students in the aviation sector.

The Aviation Sector is Recovering Gradually

Gregg Gildemann, the speaker for the Guest Lecture, delivers material following the theme “Commercial Passenger/Air Cargo Market Update and Long Term Forecast” for one hour long. Gregg said that the pandemic is profoundly affecting the aviation world. During the spread of Covid-19 in early 2020, the world aviation trend plummeted. However, the aviation trend is slowly starting to show a recovery during 2021. At the beginning of the pandemic, the decline in flight trends is due to many flight bans. Moreover, the large number of countries that closed flight access also caused the aviation industry to experience a downturn.

In 2021 the industry experienced a rise due to the significant influence of the vaccination rate. Gregg said that according to Boeing’s predictions, domestic flights would recover, as before the pandemic, in 2022. “Flight trends are falling due to the pandemic. However, starting in 2021, the world of aviation is slowly improving. We predict that in 2023-2024 the aviation traffic can return to that in 2019. Flight recovery will start from domestic flights in 2022, followed by regional flights in 2023, and globally or internationally in 2024,” he said.

Economic growth in Indonesia is also considered to be improving. Indonesia’s economy fell in the fourth quarter of 2020 but improved in 2021. In the fourth quarter of 2022, the Indonesian economy is predicted to accelerate from the pre-pandemic condition.

Cargo Trends Rising During Pandemic

In contrast with the passenger aircraft, the trend of cargo aircraft rose during the pandemic. This situation results from rising trends in online stores (e-commerce) and logistics during the pandemic.

The community activities restrictions policy leads people to carry out their activities virtually. One of the online activities is shopping. This delivery for groceries or packages needs a lot of cargo planes to expedite the delivery time. Therefore, cargo planes trends are increased during the pandemic.

By: Atiek Rachmawati, S.S (Alumnus of Javanese Language and Literature FSSR UNS (Now FIB) 1999/Javanese Teacher Jawa SMA N 2 Grabag, Magelang)

The Indonesia Dictionary (KBBI) defined a curriculum as a set of courses taught in an educational institution and/or a set of courses on a particular expertise. According to wikipedia.org, a curriculum is a set of courses and educational programs provided by an educational institution that contains a lesson plan that will be provided for students in a particular educational period. The curriculum preparation is adjusted to the condition and capacity of each educational level in administering the education and job requirements.

Prototype or archetype is an entity’s first look or standard (tangible unit). In design, a prototype is prepared before the actual product is produced on its accurate scale or mass-produced.

At the end of the odd semester or the beginning of even semester 2022, educational staff, particularly teachers, were roused with the implementation of a new curriculum, Prototype Curriculum. According to Dr. Supangat in his book, Kurikulum 2022, Mengenal Kurikulum Prototipe Bagi Sekolah dan Guru (2021) (Curriculum 2022, Understanding Prototype Curriculum for School and Teacher (2021)), the curriculum has been prepared in the last few years to be implemented in Exemplary Schools. It is regulated in Mendikbudristek Decree Number 162/M/2021 concerning Exemplary Schools.

Curriculum 2013 (K-2013/ Kurtilas) is currently implemented in the Indonesian education system. However, the pandemic forced the government to apply flexible policy for schools to select curricula that match students’ learning needs. The academic unit could independently apply the national K13 curriculum, emergency curriculum, and/or simplify the curriculum. The academic unit is also allowed to reduce Basic Competencies for each course so that teachers and students could be more focused on essential competencies for the next education level.

Prototype Curriculum is the follow-up of learning policy as a response to the Covid situation. The curriculum is a competence-based curriculum to support learning recovery by preparing project-based learning in supporting character development according to Pelajar Pancasila Profile. The curriculum is planned to be implemented in Preschool, Elementary School, Junior High School, Senior High School, or Vocational High School.

Its implementation in preschool will focus on students’ playing activities as the main learning activity. Shifting from Curriculum 13 that builds students’ characters through books based on themes. In the elementary school level, the natural and social sciences are combined into one course (IPAS – Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam dan Sosial), which was separated in Curriculum 2013. English becomes an optional course for students with a project-based learning approach. The new curriculum requires an informatics course at the junior high school level, which was set as an optional course in curriculum 2013. The course is set to be a compulsory course to adjust to digital technology development. Concentration into natural science, social science, and literature tracks is abolished in senior high school, and first-year students will learn under the same method as junior high school students. However, in their second and third year, they could select a combination of courses that match their needs, ability, and aspiration.

The Prototype Curriculum is a new paradigm in Indonesia that aligns with the Merdeka Belajar program. This curriculum applies student-centered learning that will be applied gradually starting from the Exemplary Schools selected by the government. The curriculum remains an option that the academic unit could select to implement. However, this curriculum will likely be applied to all academic units in Indonesia. Therefore, it is wise that each unit starts to prepare to implement this curriculum.

Each education unit needs to prepare several stages to support the implementation of the new curriculum: (1) Registration and data collection because the new curriculum is an option that aligns with the Exemplary School program, (2) How school prepares Operational Curriculum for Educational Unit (KOSP) based on Pelajar Pancasila Profile. School’s curriculum framework must develop the eight National Education Standards (NSP) to improve students’ performance using project-based learning that is adjusted to the academic unit’s vision and missions. (3) Teacher readiness in a more innovative learning process to develop student characters based on Pelajar Pancasila Profile and project-based learning. Pelajar Pancasila Profile refers to students with six characteristics: belief and piousness, global unity, independence, work together, critical thinking, and creativity.

Therefore, it can be concluded that the positive impact of the Prototype Curriculum is the implementation of project-based learning that focuses on essential materials. The learning process is improved through the improvements in students’ characters. Students’ potential is explored better through various exciting learning opportunities that prevent learning loss due to the pandemic. Lastly, teachers in Indonesia could welcome the Prototype Curriculum as a new education paradigm in Indonesia under the Merdeka Belajar Program. (***)

UNS — Alumni Association (IKA) of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, in collaboration with the Center for Excellence (PUI) Javanologi, held Wedangan discussing the ‘Tosan Aji in Local Wisdom’ on Wednesday (9/2/2022).

The online event invited three speakers with keris knowledge, the Chief of PUI Javanologi UNS, Prof. Sahid Teguh Widodo, M.Hum., Ph.D., Empu Basuki Teguh Yuwono, M.Sn. from Padepokan Keris Brojobuwono, and cultural practitioner, KRT Gaura Mancacaritadipura, as speakers.

In his opening remark, a representative from IKA UNS, Dr. Abdul Kharis Almasyhari, stated that Keris is the product of advanced metallurgy technology and the advantages owned by Javanese culture that need to be appreciated. Although many think that Keris is a mystical creation, its production process has reliable scientific knowledge that is appropriate to be discussed on the academic stage. This opinion was supported by Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, Business, and Information Affairs UNS, Prof. Dr.rer.nat Sajidan, M.Si., who stated that Keris is a noble creation that contains philosophical thought and diverse variety posing as local excellence at the international level.

As the person behind the enlistment of Keris as cultural heritage by UNESCO, KRT Gaura Mancacaritadipura shared the enlistment process in UNESCO. The Damartaji Foundation, led by Haryono Haryoguritno, received the duty from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to meet 49 enlistment criteria. He mentioned that the international community had paid attention to Keris, and it was used as a palace token, leading to many Keris being kept in museums abroad.

Empu Basuki Teguh Yuwono, M.Sn., also emphasized that the remaining mistake is the thought that Keris is merely a weapon and mystical tool, while it also serves as a means of communication and a memento that makes people become better people. As a professional in the Keris-making process, the smith acts as an artisan who creates Keris as an embodiment of their thoughts. As a local cultural work, Keris is also identical to the global culture. “We do not need to worry about bringing Keris to the global community. (Because) when more people access Keris, more people will understand its meaning,” Empu Basuki stated.

He added that Keris is local art and culture on the global stage and a symbol of local wisdom with a special position in the global culture. Therefore, to introduce this work to the local people, the professionals could use modern language that focuses on the millennials and ensure that the materials are understandable.

Prof. Sahid Teguh Widodo, M.Hum., Ph.D., added material on purwaka keris, which reach its heyday during Sultan Agung Hanyakrakusuma who require every person to own a keris. Keris, therefore, is a mark of technological advancement, specifically in metallurgy in the past. Humas UNS

The Android-based app is a development of aksiberbagi.com, released by Ardi two years ago. Aksiberbagi.com is a humanity platform that moves in digital social fundraising.

The launching was held in Social Innovation Talks. Dr. Sutanto stated that technology innovation is vital to share the benefits, especially amid the current rapid development.

“We hoped that (the app) will ease the community in sharing goodness through a more effective donation.
UNS — Working as a Project Manager in Boeing Commercial Airplanes, the best company in an airplane company has never come into the alumnus of social science program, Veronika W.R. Andrews. Graduating from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) in 1989, Veronica started her career as a manager in a hotel in Bandung. Her English skills soon captured the eyes of her then patrons, expatriates hired by then PT Nurtanio (now PT Dirgantara Indonesia), who asked her to teach their children.

Her success in earning second and third income to help finance her windowed mother in Surakarta, however, did not last long because Vero, her short name, needed to face the bitter reality of failed marriage. Vero, however, did not let this low point in life drag her down. She continued working her career until she met her now-husband, an expatriate who was also hired by Nurtanio. After her second marriage and her husband’s contract expiration with PT. Nurtanio, Vero followed him back to the US, together with her sons.

Starting life in the US, far from families, in a foreign land, with a foreign language, and raising three children of her own was a challenge for the strong Veronika Andrews. The challenge that she defeated well. After realizing that her English is no longer sufficient to live in the country, Vero was quick to catch up, starting to learn English, finding a job, and learning daily life. “People speak fast, and I could not understand them. Then I decided to learn English again,” she stated.

Early on, Veronika has decided that working for Boeing was her dream after hearing stories brought back by her husband, who then worked for Boeing. She then laid out her plan to achieve the dream. Veronika took a course in a college to study computer programming. She also found a job to support her new education, an institution that provides support to children with problematic families. However, success was not easily served. Again, Veronika needed to move and followed her husband. This time to Brazil, before they returned to the US, allowing Veronika to catch up on her education where she left.

Veronika’s hard work captured her college attention. She then landed a job as a computer laboratory assistant while working other jobs, the so-called graveyard shift that allowed her to have more study time, travel agent, and dentist’s assistant. But she soon realized that working at a small business as an Asian is not an easy task. She received unequal treatment and was always vulnerable to termination of work despite her job quality. “It was as if the place needed to reduce employee, I will be the first that got fired,” she stated.

These experiences again never dragged her down but instead strengthened her will to work in a large multinational company that pays attention to employee inclusivity, none other than Boeing. Attempts after attempts, Veronika succeeded in securing her dream career in 2007 as a Data Management Specialist for Boeing with a contract of three months.

“I was delighted and proud, someone from a small city like Solo could be accepted to work in a company as big as Boeing. I directly inform my family in Solo,” she said.

One dream down, but the journey did not stop. Before completing her first contract with her dream company, Vero was quick to find another career opportunity in the firm. At last, she secured two positions and chose to be Integrated Schedules Specialist for Being 747/767 project in 2008. Hard work, people-oriented, and willingness to share ideas finally brought the Surakarta-born woman into her current position, Project Manager. She then took on another journey for her next dream an MBA from the University of Phoenix. Veronika also received numerous awards in her career, Boeing Global Diversity and Inclusion Award 2018 and Society of Asian Science and Engineers (SASE) Advocate Awards 2019. She is also the President of Boeing Asian Pacific Association (BAPA) and Vice President of the Boeing Indonesian Association (BIA).

In the Guest Lecture “Success in The West: The Journey, The Struggles, The Failures, The Victories” on Tuesday (25/1/2022) through Zoom Cloud Meeting held by UNS, Vero also shared her biggest struggle with a health condition that once forced her to take a break from her beloved career. In the guest lecture, she emphasized the importance of never giving up and believing in one’s dream. The survivor of pancreatic cancer also stated that it is important to have a hobby, to work hard, and have fun, and share her hobby: photography that also received numerous awards in Flickr and Pixabay.

“Let me conclude this with a quote, dream as high as the sky so that when you fall, you will fall among the stars. Soekarno-Hatta,” she concluded. Humas UNS

UNS — Wedangan Ikatan Keluarga Alumni (IKA) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta was held to discuss the “Role of Media in Shaping Public Opinion” on its 92nd series. Several speakers with media and communication expertise were invited to the online discussion through the Zoom Cloud Meeting and UNS YouTube channel on Wednesday (12/1/2022).

The online discussion was opened by the Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, S.H., M.Hum., who discussed the power of information technology and globalization parameters in his opening remark. According to the Rector, mass media holds a vital role in daily life.

“There are no people who do not have control over the media. Either in daily life, for example, we are inseparable from the phone. When it is gone, we are like a person who loses in the mid of the forest, do not know the direction,” Prof. Jamal stated.

The first speaker in this online discussion was the Director General (Dirjen) of Information and Public Communication of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kemenkominfo), Dr. Usman Kansong, S.Sos., M.Si. In his material, Dr. Usman Kansong explained that trust on media is the core of public opinion. Based on the Edelman Trust Barometer data, Dr. Usman stated that Indonesians trust towards the media increases by three points to 72% in 2021, providing a solid basis for media in creating public opinion. He also reminded the media’s function in shaping public opinion according to the Press Law, the information function, education function, entertainment function, control function, and economic institution function.

Media Strategy in Shaping Public Opinion

Dr. Usman also explained the media strategies in shaping public opinion. According to him, there are five strategies that can be implemented in shaping public opinion. First, to connect the issues to the public’s needs. The media needs to find public meaning in reporting an issue. The second strategy is the use of trends and jargons to attract the public’s interests. The third is to ride the wave and pay attention to what is developing in the community regarding the social, political, economic, and other issues.

“If media agenda needs to capture public’s attention, the agenda should follow what is developing in public,” he added. The fourth strategy, according to Dr. Usman, is selecting the appropriate topic, and the last strategy is adding surveys and research finding to support the narration.

Challenges for the Media

Elderman Trust Barometer 2021 data showed that only one of four Indonesians applied good information processing, with 60% of respondents sharing whatever information they regarded as interesting and only 32% having good information hygiene. According to Dr. Usman, social media also poses different challenges considering its algorithm power in shaping people’s opinions. He argued that regulation is needed to manage this algorithm to shape positive opinions.

“That’s why the Press Board supported by media association and monitored by Kominfo is preparing a Publisher Right. We require global platforms, such as Facebook, Google, and others to report when they change their algorithm,” he stated.

The following materials were delivered by the President Director of Lampung Post and Media Group Editorial Board, Abdul Kohar, S.Sos., Jawa Pos TV Chief Editor and Director 2015-2020 Irwan Setyawan, S.Sos., M.Ikom., Central Java TVRI Chairman Drs.
