UNS — The Graduate School of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has established a strategic partnership. We aim to enhance human resource quality in Bontang, particularly through our master’s and doctoral programs,” he explained.

Ir. Amirudin, M.P., Head of Bapperida Bontang, expressed his appreciation for the initiative. He emphasized his hope that the partnership will lead to tangible programs addressing the city’s specific needs. “We are optimistic about this collaboration.
Expanding International Networks

In addition to national partnerships, UNS has also been actively expanding its international collaboration. By signing MoUs with universities and research institutions abroad, UNS seeks to enhance student exchange programs. It also aims to promote joint research projects and capacity-building initiatives. These efforts align with UNS’s vision to become a world-class university that contributes to global knowledge production.

These strategic partnerships reflect UNS’s commitment to advancing education, research, and community service. By strengthening its cooperation network with key institutions, UNS continues to make a tangible contribution to national development and societal well-being. Through initiatives like the DREAMTEAM program and international collaborations, UNS aims to become a leading force in innovation and education in Indonesia.
This Javanese Culture Short Course is attended by seven students from Xihua University over the next 12 days. The Dean of FIB UNS, Prof. Dr. Warto, M.Hum., stated that although the introduction to Javanese culture is brief, it is very meaningful for both parties in strengthening future cooperation. Through this cultural gateway, Prof. Warto hopes that students from Xihua University will gain a deeper understanding of Indonesia, particularly Javanese culture, and that UNS students will learn about Chinese culture, especially Bashu culture.

For the next two weeks, the UNS Mandarin Language Center will serve as a bridge for exchange and cooperation between the two universities and will strive to provide adequate attention to the students.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Confucius Institute UNS from China side, Dr. Fan Jie, M.Li., hopes that through this two-week student exchange, students will not only learn and experience different cultures but also exhibit a proactive, humble, and friendly spirit. “I hope you not only discover new things but also make many new friends,” Dr. Fan Jie, M.Li. said.

The students from Xihua University are accompanied by the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Literature and Journalism at Xihua University, Fan Jia. He advised all participants in the short course to fully understand Javanese culture under the guidance of the FIB lecturers and to maintain team cooperation.

One of the short course participants expressed that his interest in Javanese culture motivated him to join the program. “I love learning about the arts. Besides that, I play the Guzheng (Chinese zither), which seems similar to traditional Javanese musical instruments,” Fan Lichen said when asked by the Head of the Javanese Culture Short Course Program, Dr. M. Bagus Sekar Alam, S.S., M.Si.

Subsequently, the short course participants from Xihua University, accompanied by several FIB lecturers and students from the S-1 Mandarin Language and Chinese Culture (BMTK), took a campus tour to familiarize themselves with the UNS environment.

In his welcoming remarks, Dr. I Nyoman Sukerna, S.Kar., M.Hum., Rector of ISI Surakarta, expressed his delight at the collaboration offered by UNS in organizing the dance competition for Peksimida Central Java 2024. ISI Surakarta, as a partner, will maintain neutrality in the judging process. The judges are not selected from ISI, UNS, or BPSMI officials,” Dr. I Nyoman explained.

The Chairman of BPSMI Central Java Province, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ahmad Yunus, M.S., reported that a series of competitions for Peksimida Central Java 2024 are being held at 12 universities across Central Java, from June 11 to July 31, 2024.

The competitions at Peksimida Central Java 2024 serve as a selection process to choose the best representatives from 15 art categories. These representatives will represent BPSMI Central Java Province at the National Student Art Week (Pekan Seni Mahasiswa Nasional, or Peksiminas) in Jakarta this September.

The 2024 Peksimida Central Java has registered the highest number of participants nationally, with a total of 840 students from 55 universities across Central Java.

“With Peksimida 2024, it is hoped that students from Central Java universities will perform at their best. The winners will hopefully excel at Peksiminas 2024, and BPSMI Central Java Province aims to reclaim the overall championship title, repeating the success of Peksiminas 2022,” Prof. Yunus reported.

The Acting Rector of UNS, Dr. Chatarina Muliana, S.H., S.E., M.H., expressed her pride and joy in hosting an event rich in cultural values. She emphasized that Peksimida Central Java 2024 is a testament to the collective effort in developing, preserving, and appreciating the arts among students.

“We hope that through this event, talented young artists will emerge, bringing pride to Central Java Province on national and international stages. Additionally, Peksimida is expected to strengthen ties and cooperation among universities in our region,” Dr. Chatarina said in her remarks, officially opening the event.

The grand opening of Peksimida Central Java 2024 was enlivened by performances from the Student Activity Unit (UKM) Traditional Arts Coordination Board (BKKT), which presented the Gambyong dance, and UNS Pencak Silat, which showcased Tapak Suci martial arts.

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta is exploring further partnership opportunities with Kansas State University, United States. Both parties are currently discussing possible partnership options through a focus group discussion on Wednesday (10/8/2022) at Taiwan Corner, UPT UNS Library.

Cary Chappell, an instructor and Curriculum Chair at Kansas State University, United States, attended the discussion in person. Chappell’s presence was welcomed by the Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) of International Partnership and Services (UNS International Office/IO) staff. The UNS International Office was represented by the Coordinator of the Americas and Oceania Region, Feri Setyowibowo; the Coordinator of the Asia and Middle East Region, Dr. Anif Jamaluddin; and European and African Region Coordinator, Dimas Rahadian, Ph.D., during the meeting. The discussion was also attended by representatives of the English Literature Study Programs’ lecturers in UNS, including the Diploma in English Literature Study Program represented by Nur Saptaningsih, M.Hum.; the Undergraduate in English Literature Study Program is represented by Dr. Fitria Akhmerti Pramasista, S.S., M.A.; and the Master in English Literature Study Program is represented by Dr. Nur Arifah Drajati, M.Pd.

The Coordinator of the Americas and Oceania Region, Setyowibowo Ferry, welcomed Kansas State University’s call for establishing a partnership with UNS. The initiative will be followed by a further discussion on the available partnership possibility between the two parties. “It’s a great partnership opportunity. We will discuss further what type of partnership activities are available to further develop and improve each university’s quality,” said Feri.

Meanwhile, Cary Chappell is also enthusiastic about this partnership, stating that UNS and Kansas State University have conducted an indirect partnership since 2018. While in 2019, students from the Faculty of Agriculture UNS were enrolled for a research internship at Kansas State University. However, the planned partnership development between UNS and Kansas State University was hampered due to the Covid-19 pandemic. “The pandemic has undermined the relationship that had previously been established. For this reason, we are trying to improve the relationship by exploring a future partnership to recover international student interest,” he explained.

During the discussion, Cary mentioned several partnership schemes available, such as short courses, online courses with credit score recognition, online courses without credit score recognition, conversational classes with native speakers, and scholarships for international students. Cary also does not limit the possibility of other partnership schemes. Humas UNS

UNS — The Ecoxyztem Venture Builder, in cooperation with the EU Delegation for Indonesia and Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Innovation Hub, under the Climate Innovation League program dissemination framework, held a roadshow and talkshow on the Climate Innovation League entitled “Escalating Ecopreneurs to be the Catalyst of Green Economy Transition” on Wednesday (22/6/2022). The event was held at Building 3, Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) UNS, and was broadcasted online through the Zoom Meeting application.

This event aims to encourage more entrepreneurs that offer environmental problems solutions, which was attended by more than 200 participants both virtually and on-site. The attending participants were not only UNS students but also students from other cities such as Jakarta, Semarang, Yogyakarta, and Purwokerto. Other than students, start-up business activists in Surakarta also attended the event.

The Climate Innovation League Roadshow was the first roadshow that was also attended by the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation Affairs UNS, Prof. Dr. Kuncoro Diharjo, S.T., M.T., who openly supports all kinds of entrepreneurial activities, especially those currently carried out by UNS Innovation Hub, which focuses on developing established and new start-ups.

Prof. Kuncoro Diharjo expressed his gratitude and support for this event. “We are very grateful for the support and cooperation provided by the European Union and Ecoxyztem for choosing UNS to be one of the dissemination sites for an environmental business or climate change-related insight,” said Prof. Kuncoro in his remarks.

Further, Prof. Kuncoro said that UNS is currently focusing on developing a green campus concept. “We are highly enthusiastic about all the innovations and potential for cooperation to be conducted, which allows students to devote their best potential to providing service to the community and the earth,” he said.

The program invites youth to develop business innovations in four sectors, namely sustainable transportation and renewable energy, circular economy and responsible resource usage, sustainable environmental development, and green industry transition, as well as climate reporting and funding management.

Henriette Faergemann, as First Counsellor Environment, Climate Action, ICT at the EU Delegation to Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam, explained the EU green deal roadmap. “In the EU green deal or EU Green Deal roadmap, European countries will aim to achieve climate-neutral plan by 2050 through economic transformation. This target will be implemented simultaneously with a sustainable development process with international partners, especially the government and the people of Indonesia, to collaboratively encourage global climate action,” he said.

He added that the EU Green Deal could be formed on demand to develop a better and more sustainable life and health. Solo was chosen as the first city to hold a roadshow due to its rapid innovation, start-up business development, and technology development. With the potential of the existing start-ups’ growth, this current situation can be the initial force for innovation development towards environmental solutions.

Jonathan Davy, CEO of Ecoxyztem, said that he saw a significant start-ups’ development in Surakarta. “Regarding the start-ups’ development, it will be wonderful if we from Ecoxyztem can collaborate with policy stakeholders, such as UNS, as the center for the next generation of ecopreneurs education. Healthy infrastructure for start-ups growth in Solo must be supported with good collaboration with industrial practitioners, thus, emerging environmental innovations will be more applicable to solve the problems,” Jonathan said.

The event concluded with a talkshow entitled “Ecopreneur: Unlock Opportunities to Respond to Environmental Issues.” The talkshow invited three speakers, including Yosephin Yayi Utari as Marketing Officer Xurya as well as Putri Solo III 2022, Emir Hartri Putra as Program and Community Lead Impalla Space, and Miftah Faridl Widhagdha as Managing Director Prospect Institute.

The invited speakers and participants agreed that Surakarta has the same opportunities as several other major cities in Indonesia, such as Jakarta, Bandung, and Surabaya, especially for entrepreneurial opportunities and has an impact on the wider community. One of the invited speakers, Miftah Faridl Widhagdha, presented his experience in establishing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) consultants for mining companies. “That experience provides me with a perspective that currently, there is an actual decentralized trend for service providers and impactful solutions. Jakarta is already too full of business people, now it’s time for Solo start-ups to rise, by taking part in the Climate Innovation League competition,” said Miftah, Managing Director of Prospect Institute. Humas UNS
