What is HMPV and How Does It Differ from COVID-19?

Speaking to uns.ac.id, Betty Suryawati, dr. M. Biomed Sci, Ph.D., Sp.MK, Head of the Undergraduate Medical Study Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, explained that HMPV is a pathogen responsible for upper respiratory tract infections. Its symptoms resemble the common cold or flu, including fever, sore throat, nasal congestion, and cough.

dr. Betty emphasized that although both HMPV and COVID-19 affect the respiratory system, they are different. HMPV belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family, while the virus responsible for COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, is part of the Coronavirus family.

“HMPV and COVID-19 differ in transmission, replication, and pathogenesis mechanisms. HMPV infections typically cause mild to moderate symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, and sore throat. However, children and individuals with weakened immune systems may develop pneumonia-like symptoms. Even so, HMPV is generally milder than COVID-19,” she explained on Friday (24/1/2025).

How HMPV Spreads and Ways to Prevent It

Like most other respiratory viruses, HMPV spreads through airborne transmission and contact with contaminated objects.

“Infected individuals can spread HMPV through sneezing, coughing, or touching objects with virus-contaminated hands. The virus can linger on frequently touched surfaces like doorknobs and public surfaces. If contaminated hands touch the eyes, mouth, or nose, infection can occur,” dr. Betty added.

To prevent HMPV transmission, the UNS Faculty of Medicine lecturer highlighted the importance of strengthening immunity. People can boost their immune systems by eating nutritious food, staying hydrated, getting enough rest, and maintaining proper hand hygiene—especially after visiting public places.

“Most viral infections resolve on their own if the immune system is strong. Respiratory infections caused by HMPV do not require specific treatment. Instead, people should focus on strengthening their immune system through a healthy diet, sufficient rest, and proper hand hygiene. To reduce the risk of transmission, wearing a mask in public places is advisable, particularly for vulnerable individuals,” she explained.

Managing HMPV Symptoms

HMPV symptoms can be managed with over-the-counter medications like paracetamol or flu relief medicines. Patients with HMPV do not need to self-isolate. Instead, they should wear a mask and follow proper cough etiquette. Covering the mouth and nose with the inner elbow while coughing or sneezing, rather than using hands, helps prevent the spread of virus-laden droplets.

By practicing these preventive measures, individuals can reduce the risk of HMPV transmission and maintain better respiratory health.

In this competition, Agus presented an innovative project titled “Recycle and Re-energize the Lithium Cell: Turning Lithium Battery Waste into a Blessing.” His concept offers a sustainable solution for processing lithium battery waste, a growing concern due to the rising use of electric vehicles and electronic devices. Agus proposed a method to repurpose discarded lithium batteries through reconditioning and repacking processes, transforming them into valuable resources with increased economic worth.

“This idea not only helps reduce environmental pollution but also supports efforts to achieve Net Zero Emission targets,” Agus explained to uns.ac.id on Tuesday (29/10/2024).

The achievement was announced during the awards ceremony held at the Learning, Innovation, Knowledge, and Exhibition (LIKE) 2024 event at JIEXPO Kemayoran, Jakarta, from October 22 to 24, 2024. Agus Ramelan’s victory adds to UNS’s list of accomplishments and highlights the growing national recognition of academia’s contributions to sustainable technology development.

“I hope this idea will greatly benefit society and the environment while inspiring future sustainability-based innovations,” Agus added.

The NZE Moonshots category, which Agus entered, is part of PLN’s commitment to leading Indonesia’s energy transition. PLN’s initiatives also focus on an integrated green economy aligned with regional development.

The PLN Research and Development Center (Puslitbang) launched the PLN ICE Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) Program under the Idea Generation category, inviting academic participants from universities across Indonesia. PLN aims to establish a TJSL program that generates impactful value creation and supports innovation that aligns with PLN’s sustainability and social responsibility goals.

PLN seeks innovations from the academic sector to support its transformation program, “Moonshots,” focusing on growth, digitalization, and net-zero emissions. “According to the estimation from the Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), Indonesia will have a productive age population of 64% of the total population in 2030,” Lintang stated on Thursday (3/3/2022).

Lintang added that the demography bonus could bring positive and negative impacts depending on the actions taken by the community and the government. She also emphasized that the demography bonus is a challenge that needs to be prepared well because it means job competition will become stricter. “The domination of productive age needs to be balanced with the availability of jobs. Limited job opportunities will lead to high unemployment. This is the root of the demography disaster,” Lintang added.

High unemployment will bring a long-lasting impact, an aging population and longer life expectancy among the elderly, as well as high poverty and increased criminal offenses. Therefore, appropriate planning should be prepared. “The role of university students is to continue improving their quality,” Lintang stated. University students with these criteria could build a creative community to solve and manage both social and individual issues in the community. “And enrich yourself with entrepreneurial knowledge to be prepared in facing the peak of demography bonus in 2030,” Lintang added.

Answering the challenges of demography bonuses could improve productivity and Indonesians’ welfare. Therefore, the government and the community need to work together, and work had to welcome the demography bonus in 2030. Humas UNS

With a total of 142 pages, the book comprehensively explains the equivalence theory and analysis of textual equivalence in Arabic-Javanese translation. The description is divided into seven chapters, where each chapter discusses a specific topic, which is interrelated to the rest of the chapters. In the first chapter, the author and researcher, Muhammad Yunus Anis, examines local language under the title ‘Overview of Local Languages in Indonesia.’ The following chapter discusses a similar topic but under detailed acculturation studies, which focused on the language acculturation between Arabic and Javanese. The third chapter contains the corpus (text data sources packaged in digital form) analysis in Arabic-Javanese translation. The discussion on corpus becomes a necessity in contemporary linguistic studies because the contribution of the corpus to the science of translation is undeniable.

The description of the equivalence theory is discussed comprehensively in the fourth chapter, followed by an analysis of textual equivalence in Arabic and Javanese translation in the fifth chapter. The following sixth chapter depicts the study of the theory of communicative dynamism in Arabic-Javanese translation. This study is a continuation of the discussion of textual equivalence but at a higher and complex level. Lastly, in the final chapter, Muhammad Yunus Anis provides an analysis on the annotation studies, which are seen as an important part in the study of Arabic and Javanese translation criticism.

To the uns.ac.id team, the lecturer from the Arabic Language and Literature states that his interest in studying the textual equivalence of the Arabic-Javanese translation is due to the language contact between the two languages. The real proof of the language contact is the use of ‘aksara pegon’ to write a translation of a book in Arabic into Javanese —or better known as ‘kitab kuning,’ which are often found in Islamic Boarding Schools, Indonesia. “We want to explore further how Arabic and Javanese contact,” explains Muhammad Yunus, on Wednesday (18/8/2021).

The next reason is due to the Islamic moral message contained in the Arabic – Jawi manuscript, such as ‘Bidayatul Hidayah’ manuscript. “We want to preserve it (Arabic – Javanese study) because some lecturers consider that such study has begun to be marginalized,” Muhammad Yunus added. He hopes that the studies on Arabic – Javanese literature will not only become a study material for students in salaf boarding schools but also as study material in the academic world, which has been equipped with translation theory. 

Previously, Muhammad Yunus Anis had researched a similar topic, ‘Textual Equivalence in Arabic-Javanese Translation: An Effort to Preserve Local Wisdom and Translation Models.’ The 2019 research shows a unique textual equivalence in the Arabic – Javanese manuscript. “The unique thing is that he (the translator) translates it using the literal method, word for word method. Further, in the Arabic-Javanese translation, we found a patterned information structure. The patterns found to have certain themes such as topical themes, interpersonal themes, and textual themes,” Muhammad Yunus explains.

Working on the research of Arabic-Javanese translation since 2016, this achievement in the Local knowledge Acquisition Program by LIPI gives Muhammad Yunus a spark of hope. Because the program is committed to helping the distribution of scientific books —in this case, is the theory of translation, to make it more accessible to the public. The commitment to on the matters is manifested in the ease of access to get the book. The general public can download the book ‘Kesepadanan Tekstual Penerjemahan Arab – Jawa’ for free from the lipipress.lipi.go.id.

Even though the book is distributed for non-profit purposes, Muhammad Yunus Anis reveals that he is pleased with the opportunity to share knowledge with the public. “I hope this book can be beneficial for students, researchers, or forwarded to other researchers,” he states. Humas UNS
