Universitas Sebelas Maret(UNS) Surakarta has once again achieved a remarkable feat in the international rankings. According to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings (WUR) 2026, UNS secured the second national spot, placing it in the 1001–1200 bracket globally. This achievement marks a significant improvement from the previous year, when UNS was in the 1201–1500 range.

UNS outperformed several prominent Indonesian universities, including Binus University, nstitut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Universitas Airlangga (Unair), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), and Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad), all of which were ranked in the 1201–1500 band. Nationally, UNS is positioned just behind the Universitas Indonesia (UI), with a global ranking of 801–1000.

Commitment to Excellence and Global Competitiveness

UNS Rector, Prof. Dr. Hartono, expressed gratitude and appreciation for the achievement. He stated that the improved ranking results from the academic community’s hard work and reaffirmed UNS’s commitment to enhancing the quality of education, research, and international collaboration.

“This achievement is tangible proof that UNS can compete globally. We will continue strengthening research, innovation, and our international network so that UNS becomes even more recognized worldwide,” Prof. Hartono said on Thursday, October 9, 2025.

In the THE WUR 2026, UNS received an overall score of 32.1–35.4. This score is based on five key pillars: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook.

Teaching: UNS scored 25.1, reflecting the quality of its learning environment.

Research Environment: With a score of 23.8, UNS demonstrated an increasing volume, income, and reputation for its research.

Industry: UNS’s highest score was 51.0 in this category, showcasing the university’s ability to support innovation and discovery in the industrial sector.

Research Quality: The university also performed well in this pillar with a score of 42.2, which measures the strength and influence of its research.

International Outlook: UNS earned a score of 41.1, indicating its ability to attract students, lecturers, and researchers from various countries.

Prof. Hartono added that the improved scores across various indicators prove the university’s consistency in maintaining academic and research standards. “We’re not just focusing on international publications but also on the quality and relevance of our research to the needs of society and industry. UNS aims to be a valuable university, both nationally and globally,” he explained.

Methodology and Future Goals

The THE WUR methodology evaluates universities worldwide using 18 indicators under five main pillars: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry. The assessment uses a combination of quantitative data and global academic reputation. To be included in the rankings, universities must meet specific criteria, such as having at least 1,000 relevant scholarly publications between 2020 and 2024 and offering undergraduate education.

The THE ranking system is trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry, and governments worldwide to compare university performance comprehensively. Through standardized data, THE ensures each indicator objectively reflects a university’s capacity without geographical or economic bias.

Prof. Hartono stressed that this achievement isn’t the end of the journey but a stepping stone for further progress. “We will continue to improve our research performance, expand international collaborations, and strengthen UNS’s role as an innovative and globally competitive university. Our future target is to break into the top 1000 worldwide,” he affirmed.

He also extended his gratitude to all lecturers, staff, students, and industry and government partners who contributed to this success. “This achievement is the result of the collective effort of the entire UNS academic community. We hope this milestone will motivate us to continue our work and benefit the nation and the world,” Prof. Hartono concluded.

UNS—Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has secured a spot among the top 10 universities in Indonesia according to the Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings 2025. This accomplishment marks UNS’s latest achievement in international university rankings in 2025.

This year, UNS also attained a global spot within the 301–400 range and ranks 6th nationally among all participating Indonesian universities. This placement shows UNS’s ongoing efforts to build a university environment responsive to environmental, social, and economic issues.

The Director of the Directorate of Planning, Cooperation, Internationalization, and Reputation at UNS, Ibrahim Fatwa Wijaya, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., conveyed on Wednesday (18/6/2025) that UNS has shown significant improvement compared to the previous year. “Globally, UNS experienced a remarkable rise. In 2024, we were in the 601–800 global ranking range. This year, we have successfully advanced to the 301–400 range. This leap deserves appreciation,” he stated.

What is the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings?

Ibrahim further explained that the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings is a global ranking system that evaluates universities based on their commitment to sustainable development. The ranking uses the indicators derived from the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition, in 2025, 2,526 universities from 130 countries participated in this ranking.

Moreover, the ranking assesses university performance across four main pillars: research, stewardship, outreach, and education. These pillars are evaluated based on how well universities contribute to achieving the 17 SDGs established by the United Nations.

The Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings conducts the evaluation process rigorously and systematically. The rankings apply three types of indicators: bibliometric data, sustainability metrics, and policy-based evidence. The data are collected from research outcomes, community service activities, and institutional policies.

For bibliometric indicators, THE Impact Rankings 2025 applies a five-year assessment window. Each indicator must align with the SDG theme to ensure balanced institution comparisons.

UNS’s ranking results indicate its strong commitment to sustainable development. UNS, which is also known as the Fortress of Pancasila, continues to integrate sustainability principles into its academic and non-academic programs. This dedication shows UNS’s research initiatives, community empowerment, and strategic partnerships.

The assessment category used by Times Higher Education

In the overall evaluation, Times Higher Education calculates each university’s final score based on SDG 17 and the university’s three highest-scoring SDGs. SDG 17 comprises 22% of the total, while the other three comprise 26%. Finally, the final score is the average of the last two years.

In 2025, four SDG categories contribute most significantly to UNS’s overall score. Those four SDGs are SDG 2, SDG 9, and SDG 8, with the highest scores, and SDG 17, as the main category.

On SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), UNS scored 83.6. This score makes UNS secure 29th globally in this category. This category assesses the university’s contribution to ending hunger, increasing food security, and supporting sustainable agriculture.

Furthermore, on SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), UNS obtained a score ranging from 80.7 to 92.3. This indicator assesses the university’s efforts in building sustainable infrastructure, encouraging inclusive industrialization, and facilitating innovation.

UNS also recorded a high score of 75.6 on SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). This score makes UNS rank 86th globally for SDG 8. This assessment considers the role of universities in creating decent jobs and encouraging sustainable economic growth.

Then, on SDG 17, Partnership for the Goals, UNS got a score ranging from 81.8 to 86.5. This SDG assesses the strength of the university’s strategic partnerships in supporting various global development programs collaboratively.

The Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings have become an essential reference point for universities worldwide in measuring their global impact. Through these rankings, institutions can measure their contributions to addressing global challenges. In addition, the system encourages continuous improvement in the quality of education, research, and community service.

This accomplishment also serves as a motivation for UNS to strengthen its global contributions. Through cross-sector collaboration, UNS remains committed to supporting the achievement of sustainable development goals. Its success in the 2025 Impact Rankings is tangible evidence of the university’s vision to become a research-based institution that delivers meaningful social impact.

“In the future, UNS will continue expanding partnerships, strengthening applied research, and enhancing the quality of educational services. We hope these efforts will elevate UNS’s position in global rankings,” Ibrahim concluded.

Humas UNS

UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has achieved 6th place in the 2024 UI Green Metric World University Ranking (WUR). This accomplishment highlights UNS’s commitment to sustainability across various aspects of campus operations, including energy management, waste management, environmentally friendly transportation, and other programs promoting environmental preservation.

The Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr. M.Si., noted that the UI Green Metric WUR 2024 announced the most sustainable universities globally. This year’s ranking involved 1.477 institutions from 95 countries.

The ranking evaluates universities’ environmental commitments and initiatives based on 39 indicators grouped into six criteria: setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation, and education. The 2024 UI Green Metric National University Ranking Awarding Ceremony was held at Graha Sanusi, Universitas Padjadjaran, Bandung, on Tuesday (17/12/2024).

“UI Green Metric WUR is an annual ranking organized by Universitas Indonesia to assess the extent to which universities worldwide implement policies and actions related to environmental sustainability. UNS achieved 6th place nationally in this ranking, proving that UNS is one of the universities with a high commitment to environmental care,” Prof. Hartono explained on Thursday (19/12/2024).

This ranking serves as recognition of the university’s efforts to maintain environmental sustainability and as motivation to further enhance eco-friendly policies, aiming to create a greener and more sustainable campus.

Prof. Hartono expressed his gratitude for this achievement, hoping it will inspire all parties at UNS to strengthen their commitment to maintaining campus sustainability and contributing tangibly to sustainable development in Indonesia and globally.

This accomplishment solidifies UNS’s position as an educational institution that excels not only in academics but also in sustainability and environmental preservation.

Through this ranking, UNS demonstrates its contribution to supporting various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to environmental sustainability, emissions reduction, and more efficient resource management.
