The discussion entitled “Mapping Research Needs for Development Policies with a Disability Perspective” was held virtually on Tuesday (18/1/2022) through the Zoom Cloud Meeting application. This discussion invited two disability experts; the first is Prof. Dr. Tri Nuke Pudjiastuti, MA, from MOST-UNESCO and the National Research and Innovation Agency. And Dra. Y. Anni Aryani, M.Prof.Acc., Ph.D., Ak., CA., CSRS., CSRA., a lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) UNS, who is also a wheelchair user.

Regarding research with a disability perspective, Prof. Nuke admits that there has not been much research using this perspective. This condition is affected by many factors, such as communities’ paradigm on persons with disabilities. “Research with a disability perspective remains a big challenge for research institutions and universities to provide support for the protection and fulfillment of rights for persons with disabilities,” she said.

Prof. Nuke added that currently, there are several pieces of research using disability perspective but only in terms of technology. Meanwhile, on the social side, persons with disabilities have not been much involved because they have only been considered a variable so far.

Additionally, Prof. Nuke also said that academics and researchers in Indonesia still dichotomize the research paradigm into basic research and applied research. This dichotomization results in a lack of applied research that departs from social issues of policy implementation for persons with disabilities. For this reason, there is still not much research that has become a basis for policymaking concerning persons with disabilities’ perspectives.

On the other hand, Dr. Anni views that the data available on persons with disabilities in Indonesia is not valid, thus, there has not been much research examining this field. According to Dr. Anni, the available data differs in each agency. Hence, researchers do not know which data are indeed valid. “Data on disability must be completely valid. So far, I cannot obtain the correct data because the data obtained from various sources are different. The data must be validated, thus, it can open up many research opportunities,” she added.

Dr. Anni as a person with a disability, also said that a lot of infrastructure for people with disabilities in Indonesia is often abused. This condition could happen due to the fact that not many Indonesians are aware of the function of these facilities.

At the end of the session, the two invited presenters hoped that there would be more research with a disability perspective. Significant attention given to people with disabilities can encourage the government to create sustainable, inclusive services for all vulnerable groups, especially people with disabilities. Their work on “The Exploration of Bio-active Compound as Inhibitor Spike Glycoprotein SARS-CoV-2 In Silico for Antiviral Drug Candidate” was inspired by the increasing number of Covid-19 cases and the lack of specific drugs for treating the illness in the community. Although vaccines are available for the mass, people infected by the new strain of Corona Virus could not get vaccinated and demand a discovery on specific drugs to treat the symptoms.

To uns.ac.id, Adhie explained that the rich bioactive compounds in Red Algae, the availability of Red Algae in the environment, and the simple cultivation method of Rhodophyta are the factors that capture their interest in studying the organism. Their study was performed in silico method as the most appropriate method for the current condition.

“One of the methods we performed was in silico; the research was conducted outside the laboratory. This method is appropriate for research in the pandemic when the access to labs is limited,” Adie explained on Saturday (18/12/2021).

Their success in the competition was welcomed with delight. Adhie and Annisa admitted that they were surprised to win the competition considering this is their first KTI competition at the national level. They went through each stage of the competition with their maximum efforts and full discussion and consultation with their supervisor. In the grand final round, they competed with nine team from various universities such as Universitas Diponegoro (Undip), Universitas Pertamina, Universitas Airlangga, to Institut Teknologi Bandung.

“Hopefully, our study could contribute to finding and developing candidates for sars-cov-2 antiviral drugs based on local wisdom,” Adhie hoped.

This achievement encourages them to obtain another achievement in the next opportunity. They want to continue making UNS proud and motivate other students to continue to be productive amid the pandemic. Adhie also reminded his fellow students to never be tired of trying because efforts will not betray the results.

Marsco 2021 is a scientific writing competition held by Student Association in Marine Studies Undip. The theme for this national competition was “Optimizing and Innovating Marine Resources based on Science and Technology in Achieving Nation’s Welfare.” The competition facilitates students to develop and hone their creativity, critical thinking, and innovation. The students in Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) Grant of Geography Education team made Simo Village, Simo Subdistrict, Boyolali District as a Disaster Reliant Village. In the program held in three months from September to November 2021, the team helped in mapping the spread of Covid-19 in the village. Simo village was selected because it was the first village affected by the second wave of Covid-19 in the Boyolali District between July and August 2021. Since then, the local government has made numerous efforts, including vaccination in collaboration with TNI/Polri, to return their region into the green zone and control the Covid-19 infection level.

Determined not to let the same thing reoccur in the village, Simo Village continuously improving its system with the help from MBKM Grant Team UNS. Various activities were programmed by the 10-members team, including mapping of Covid-19 spread in the previous wave. The mapping includes location plotting with borders of hamlets, public facilities, and demographic data. The team created an administrative map for Simo Village, population density map, Covid-19 spread map, Covid-19 risk map, Covid-19 threat map, Covid-19 capacity map, and Covid-19 vulnerability map, as references for the village government in preventing and handling the current pandemic.

Aida Nur Azqiya, the team coordinator, thanked Simo Village for the collaboration and hoped that the program could continue in the future. The team supervised by Dr. Rita Noviani, S.Si., M.Sc., and Dr. Pipit Wijayanti, S.Si., M.Sc., also established Covid-19 volunteer group with Karang Taruna Desa Simo members through socialization on the mitigation of Covid-19 and counseling on Covid-19 Disaster Resistant Village by inviting the Regional Disaster Mitigation Board of Boyolali District.

The team also conducts training Serambi Tani for the local people to improve people’s economic resilience in facing natural and non-natural disasters. The program that is aimed at housewives and members of Simo Village PKK provides training for polybag planting methods for various plants such as eggplant, chili, and tomato that match Simo Village topography. The participants also learned to make liquid organic fertilizers (POC) from household wastes such as vegetables and fruits wastes, rice water, and microbial liquid. These materials were fermented to produce POC.

Simo Village Chief, Mujiono, S.Sos., shared his delight in the program and hoped that the program could run smoothly till the end. “As Simo Village Chief, I thanked all students for dedicating (your program) to our village. Hopefully, this program could benefit us,” Mujiono stated. Humas UNS

The team members consisted of faculty members and students of the Biology Education Program, Early Childhood Education Program (PG PAUD), and Fine Art Education Program. The involvement of diverse education backgrounds aims to provide an appropriate education for parents in teaching science to their children.

The webinar was implemented in four series; science education for early childhood, skills in science process and preparing simple science activities at home, arts and science, and sharing of science activities at-home experiences. This program was initiated due to the inappropriate perception of science for early childhood and aims to educate parents on how to deliver the concept of science and assist children in studying at home.

“Because the perception of science is a complicated knowledge and is not appropriate for early childhood,” Vera Sholeha, the first speaker in the webinar, explained the misperception of science for early childhood.

To counter the misperception, she provided examples of science that are close to children’s daily life, such as children playing with sands and filtering the grains of sand as an application of physics, seeing a rainbow, the sound of frog, making tea, and ball pitching play. “The concept of science could be understood by children when explained using simple language,” she added.

Kristiana Elok Mumpuni, S.Pd., M.Pd., shared material on preparing simple science activities at home. She stated that science comprehension could be achieved through observation and practice on science. Parents need to consider their children’s age, the theme of science program, learning method, tools and equipment, and parents’ ability.

“Science does not have to be learned in the laboratory with advanced tools, but could be learned at home with surrounding tools and materials,” she added.

The third speaker, Endri Sintiana Murni, S.Pd., M.Pd., shared the relationship between arts and science and how to use arts to introduce science to children. She explained that children could express themselves freely, connecting what is in their thoughts into artworks, and even science reports can be provided in the form of artworks and examples.

“For example, the sound created from taps on glass that could form musical arrangement. This is a combination of physics and arts,” she said.

The last series was concluded with sharing of experiences on science activities at home with children. Humas UNS

The PHP2D Himatika FMIPA UNS Team Leader, Bayu Purboutomo, explained that the mushroom potential in Jatirejo Village is overabundant, but the majority of farmers sell their mushroom directly, while they could process the mushroom into various food products.

“Moreover, in the pandemic situation, many mushroom products cannot be stored for a long time without pre-processed,” Bayu Purboutomo explained to uns.ac.id team on Wednesday (24/11/2021).

Considering the large post-harvest potential of the mushroom, the Team proposed an upstream to downstream program for mushroom production that consists of pre-processing of mushrooms into processed products to product marketing training. The Team also developed the baglog wastes into organic fertilizer. Some of the already implemented programs are mushroom processing into crispy mushrooms in Mungon-Mojodipo Hamlet, Jatirejo Village. This program was proposed to PHP2D 2021 and was started with socialization on working capital lending from PT. BKK Jawa Tengah branch Karanganyar.

The mushroom processing process could increase local people’s income, while the socialization aims to explain various services provided by PT. BKK Jawa Tengah that support local people’s innovation in the mushroom processing industry. PHP2D Himatika FMIPA UNS Team also conducted the fertilizer production training from baglog in an online program through the Zoom Meeting platform in the same hamlet. Both processing and fertilizer production training was attended by the mushroom farmers group and program implementing team.

The fertilizer production training was opened with an explanation on mushroom cultivation dan organic fertilizer production by the Agricultural and Fishery Office of Karanganyar District represented by Feriana Dwi Kurniawati, S.P., M.Si. In this socialization, the office shared that Karanganyar District has a program to assist and facility for farmers through her office. The training also educates the local people on the environmental impact of mushroom cultivation and empower them to produce fertilizer from baglog.

After the training programs that took around five months, the Team launched Jare Jamur product on Sunday (21/11/2021) in Jatirejo Village Hall under the theme of “Kula Nuwun Jatirejo: Launching Produk Jare Jamur” (Excuse Me Jatirejo: Launching of Jare Jamur Product). The grand closing event started with product introduction followed by handover from the Head of Mathematics Program to the Chief of Processing and fertilizer team of Jatirejo people. The launching was marked with a ribbon cutting ceremony by Jatirejo Village Chief Arry Widodo Yuliawan and the Head of Mathematics Program FMIPA UNS, Dr. Drs. Siswanto, M.Si. Humas UNS

The program was a part of the team community service program after previously conducting a different program for the SME. The current redesign program was fully funded by the PNBP UNS grant after a thorough investigation on the SMEs located in Jagalan RT 01/RW XII, Jagalan, Jebres, Surakarta. Their investigation found that the product’s weakness is in its branding, prompting the team to provide a solution for the business to redesign its packaging label.

“Package label is a means to deliver product information and promotional media,” Dr. Adi Magna stated.

In addition, to redesigning the label, the team also assists the business and sharing the information that needs to be added to the product packaging.

“Packaging label should contain name and logo of the product, ingredients, expiry date, and certificate or food production license,” Dr. Adi Magna added.

The assistance also includes production process assistance and packaging to ensure product quality that meets the information put on the label. The program has successfully improved the image of the Dendeng Ksatria product, and the new label also meets National Standard (SNI).

“This program is expected to have a positive contribution for the partner in developing safe food products for the community,” Dr. Adi Magna concluded. Humas UNS

The webinar was initiated as a means of discussion for MSMEs to obtain information on the types of products that need BPOM license, the process of BPOM licensing process and halal license from LPPOM MUI, and sharing experiences among the MSMEs.

UNS was represented by Dr. Ari Diana and Dr. Ir. Choiroel Anam as speakers who shared information on assistance to obtain halal certificate provided by HRCS LPPM UNS and product testing that could be provided by UNS Integrated Laboratory.

“The appearance of new businesses in the online and offline market (demands businesses) to build consumer’s trusts and image to be known by the community. A way that could be taken by the entrepreneur is registering for a certificate from official institutions such as BPOM and LPPOM MUI as a guarantee of product quality,” Dr. Muhammad Cahyadi, Chief PKM, stated in the webinar on Saturday (11/9/2021).

Dr. Agr. Sc. Ernoiz Antriyandarti was also attended to discuss steps in capital management, income and costs management, and tips and tricks in starting a business in the digital era. Besides, webinar, the team also provides intensive assistance for UNS partner MSME that produces frozen food (es gabus), the 90’s es gabus.

The assistance was provided in obtaining a halal certificate, video profile production for promotional materials, and product packaging design training conducted by Nidyah Widyamurti, S.Sn., M.Ikom., who emphasized the alignment between packaging design and company image and target market. The training also provided a recommendation for the product packaging model.

“We hope these activities could benefit, not only improving knowledge but also as applicable practices to develop and advance MSMEs business,” Dr. Cahyadi added. Humas UNS

The PHP2D Program from BEM FP UNS won an IDR 35 million funding from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbud Ristek) 2021 and an addition of IDR 10 million from Ngunut Rural Funds. The secured funds were fully allocated to empower the local MSMEs, especially for the processed products from Family Medicinal Plants (Toga) in Ngunut to improve product added values to be able to compete with other products.

The Team also opened an Agridaya booth in the event to improve local excellent product’s added values, which received positive responses from the partner MSMEs. Sayemilah, as one of MSMEs’ partners, stated that MSMEs’ product launching had enabled her to sell his products to the market. “PHP2D activities increased the attractiveness of instant jamu that it is easier to sell in the market,” Sayemilah stated. The benefits of PHP2D BEM FP UNS were also perceived by Ngunut Village Chief, Sutarno, S.Pd., who mentioned that the event could improve the community economy and empower Ngunut Village people.

Although receiving positive response from the MSME partner and village government, Dr. Ir. Eka Handayanta, S.P., IPU, ASEAN Eng as Vice-Dean for Academic, Research, and Student Affairs FP UNS reminded FP UNS students to add more village partners to support the Student Community Service Program (KKN) for village development offered by Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) UNS team because PHP2D program is the implementation of Village Development MBKM.

During the implementation of the PHP2D program, students in the PHP2D Agridaya Team BEM FP UNS were not just received outside class learning but also ten credits (SKS) recognition for relevant courses such as KKN, Rural Sociology, Animal Husbandry Extension and Communication, Marketing, and Management of Animal Husbandry, Agricultural Sociology, and Marketing Information System and Marketing Management. In the future, Sugihardjo, S.IP., M.M, as Jumantono Subdistrict Head, hoped that Ngunut Village MSMEs products could develop from excellent village products into Karanganyar District excellent products.

“Hopefully, Ngunut Village MSMEs’ products could be accelerated with interesting packaging and become Karanganyar excellent products,” Sugihardjo stated.

In line with Jumantono Subdistrict Head, the Head of Cooperative, Trades, Manpower, and SMEs Office of Karanganyar District, Martadi, S.Sos., M.M also hoped that Ngunut Village local product could reach the international market. The mentioned that Ngunut MSMEs could join the International Council Small Business (ICSB) to ensure product sustainability and enter the global market.

The Tourism, Youth, and Sports Office of Karanganyar District, represented by its Office Secretary, reminded that to compete at the local and global level, the MSMEs product need to have a marketing permit that opens an opportunity for the product to be marketed as local souvenirs for local and international tourists. “Ngunut Village local products (need) to be registered to enter various souvenir centers in Karanganyar and Ngunut Village to establish Tourism Awareness Group to facilitate the establishment of Rural Tourism destination,” Agung Tjahjo stated.

The launching ceremony was concluded with a tumpeng cutting ceremony and ribbon-cutting ceremony by the Head of Tourism, Youth, and Sports Office of Karanganyar District, Drs. Titis Sri Jawoto. Humas UNS

The RG was led by Prof. Suranto, M.Sc., Ph.D., and Dr. Solichatun, M.Si., Dr. Nita Etikawati, M.Si., Dr. Widya Mudyantini, M.Si., Ari Pitoyo, M.Sc., Suratman, M.Si., and Ardo Tanjung, M.Sc., as community service members.

The event was held with Farmers Group (Klomtan) Tani Mulyo Kramen members as community service partner since 2019 and aimed to provide assistance for the development of UBILAR Production House as a means for the local women to share their creativity. The production house has also explored the local potential to improve the economy of people in Kramen Hamlet, Pablengan Village. UBILAR Production House has produced various processed foods from sweet potatoes, including sweet potato flour, dodol, brownies, and various biscuits.

“One of the problems that have been identified during the pandemic is the significant decline in production due to the halt in the product promotion and marketing,” Prof. Suranto stated to uns.ac.id on Thursday (28/10/2021).

To solve this issue, PKM RG Plant Biometry planned several activities, including the assistance to apply for a Home Industry Product license (PIRT) for UBILAR sweet potato flour. The team also provided a workshop for product marketing through social media, food photography training, and website management for UBILAR production house for information sharing and product marketing media that maximizes the use of digital technology.

The food photography training and marketing workshop was held through the Zoom Cloud Meeting platform after the participants were introduced to the platform. The event involved students from Kelompok Studi Biopix that focuses on biological photography. The group shared information on the basic knowledge in photography and tips and tricks in taking the best picture in food photography. This skill will help UBILAR in creating its promotional and marketing content. KKCTBN is a competition held by the National Center for Achievement (Puspresnas) Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemdikbudristek) 2021. This year final round was held in Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM).

Tri Rahmaji, as the General Manager of the Bengawan UV Team, stated that his team was proud of these accomplishments.

“Results never betrayed the efforts. Through spirit and hard works, the Bengawan UV Team could maintain its existence. Hopefully, this result could trigger the team’s spirit to continue (their) excellence,” Tri Rahmaji stated on Tuesday (26/10/2021).

In the competition, Bengawan UV competed in three finals for submarine division (Autonomous Semi Submarine Surface Vehicle/ASSV), high seas patrol boat division (Electric Remote Control/ERC), and patrol boat division (Fuel Engine Remote Control/FERC).

“Hopefully, Bengawan UV always solid. Could enjoy every process that applies the lesson learned from each competition as an evaluation and always showing its existence in the next events,” Aji hoped.

After succeeding in the KKCTBN, the team will compete again in the Indonesia Flying Robot Contest (KRTI) next month. Humas UNS
