The competition drew more than 400 teams from universities across Indonesia. After a rigorous selection process, Yazid and Sarah advanced to the finals, competing with eight other top-ranked teams. Their dedication and creativity helped them secure second place.

Innovative Essay on Cocoa Waste Technology

The FT UNS team presented an essay titled Natural Sunscreen Development Based on Cocoa Waste with Smart Jar Glass Technology. Their innovation focused on creating environmentally friendly sunscreen from processed cocoa waste.
This creative concept offers dual benefits. Environmentally, it promotes sustainable waste management. Technologically, it introduces an innovative method using Smart Jar Glass to enhance the product’s functionality. The project stands as a unique contribution to both health and environmental fields.

Support and Inspiration from FT UNS

Yazid first discovered the competition through Instagram and felt instantly motivated to join. “The process was both challenging and exciting. From the preliminary round to the finals, we gained valuable insights, especially in research and presentation skills,” Yazid shared, as quoted from ft.uns.ac.id on Friday (2/5/2025).

He also highlighted the strong support received from FT UNS. Academic advisors and faculty leaders encouraged the team throughout the process. “We received great encouragement from our lecturers, which helped us reach this achievement,” he added.

Yazid and Sarah hope their success will inspire fellow students to explore new opportunities and boldly take initiative. “Don’t be afraid to start—by starting, you’re already opening a path toward success,” Yazid concluded.
This accomplishment proves once again that FT UNS students continue to excel. They demonstrate not only strong academic abilities but also creativity and competitiveness on a national scale. Ari Diana Susanti, the Head of the Community Service Team, stated that managing aren starch solid waste has been an ongoing environmental burden. The previous process required significant investment and extra labor to prepare the raw materials.

Aren starch solid waste has a relatively high carbon content, with organic carbon (C-organic) reaching 69%. Therefore, aren starch solid waste can be utilized for various purposes, such as planting media and biomass fuel. “The biomass fuel from aren starch solid waste comes in the form of pellets and briquettes. These two types of fuel have different product densities, resulting in different combustion values per mass. The socialization event was held on July 7, 2024,” Ari explained, as quoted from ft.uns.ac.id on Friday (26/7/2024).

The initial survey conducted by the team identified several obstacles in managing aren starch waste. These obstacles included the need for equipment with high investment value and the necessity of sorting raw materials. The appropriate technology offered by the Community Service Team uses available equipment without sorting.

The dried raw material undergoes a carbonization process assisted by used oil to ignite the fire. The equipment used for carbonization includes cans or used drums of appropriate capacity. Once the charcoal cools, an adhesive mixture of tapioca flour or molasses is added. The briquettes are then molded using PVC or metal pipes to the desired size and pressed. The products are sun-dried until they are ready to be used as fuel.

Ari explained that this process can also be applied to other wastes, such as sawdust and even cow dung. “This process is not only applicable to aren starch waste but can also be applied to other wastes like sawdust and even cow dung,” she explained.

Community members observed that the biomass fuel produced could be used for everyday cooking needs. The village government welcomed this initiative and requested the team manage liquid waste in future programs.

The success of this program will further increase community interest in utilizing aren starch waste, thereby preserving environmental sustainability. This program is a form of Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi, which is the transfer of simple technology to rural communities, supporting similar government programs.

EMOKIDS was developed by Ananda Putra Kanieza from the Electrical Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering (FT); Siti Nurohmahwati from the Physics Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP); and Ade Rifky Setiawan from the D-3 Informatics Engineering Study Program, Vocational School (SV).

The development of this tool stemmed from the UNS students’ concern about the difficulties faced by children with autism in expressing emotions. With their background in education and technology, they decided to create an innovative solution.

“Our main goal is to help educators in special schools identify and respond to the emotions of autistic children more efficiently. EMOKIDS is specifically designed to support the learning process and social interaction of autistic children. Educators can provide better attention and support according to their special needs,” Ananda, the team leader, said to uns.ac.id on Thursday (25/7/2024).

Under the guidance of Dr. Eng. Faisal Rahutomo, S.T., M.Kom., EMOKIDS is designed to identify and monitor the emotions of children with autism in real-time. The device uses a combination of image processing and voice recognition technologies.

“There is a machine learning algorithm to detect changes in facial movements, eye expressions, and body language of children with autism related to various emotions. The obtained data is then processed and displayed through a mobile application that is easy for parents and educators to use,” Ananda added.

The advantage of this tool lies not only in detection and alerts but also in its preventive approach. EMOKIDS helps educators plan appropriate interventions. Educators can create a conducive learning environment for autistic children. Additionally, this technology has been integrated into a single prototype, making it more affordable. The device also supports the development of technology tailored to the needs of autistic children in educational settings.

Their success is proof that technological innovation can make a real contribution to the field of education, especially in Special Education (PLB). They hope that the research and development of EMOKIDS can continue to grow and provide even greater benefits to society.

The uniqueness of this workshop lies in the integration of immersive technology, such as virtual reality, in creating digital teaching media. Participants were invited to create engaging educational content using the Canva platform, optimized with AI assistance. This AI technology allows teachers to design interactive and visual teaching media without needing advanced design skills. The CoSpaces Edu platform also enables educational content to be packaged in immersive technology, providing a more engaging learning experience for students.

Eko Harry Pratisto, S.T., M.Info.Tech., Ph.D., Head of the D3 Informatics Engineering Program at SV UNS, emphasized the importance of technology literacy for educators and students in this digital era. “AI is not just the technology of the future, it is already a part of our daily lives. Through this activity, we hope to provide new insights and skills to teachers and students in utilizing AI for learning,” he said.

Maya Irawati, S.Si., Headmaster of Al-Azhar Syifa Budi Solo Junior High School, also expressed high appreciation for the Immersive Technology Research Group from the D3 Informatics Engineering Program at SV UNS for their initiative. “This activity is very beneficial for us, as it can improve the quality of learning and provide new experiences for teachers and students. We hope this collaboration can continue and be implemented at various educational levels under Al Azhar Syifa Budi Solo,” Maya Irawati said.

This community service activity was conducted to address issues faced by teachers, particularly in developing teaching media amidst the rapid technological advancements today. Teachers are required to quickly create teaching media while maintaining academic rigor.

The main material was delivered by Ovide Decroly Wisnu Ardhi, S.T., M.Eng., who provided training on creating teaching media using Canva. Ovide explained various Canva features that can help teachers design teaching media easily and efficiently, aided by AI technology to speed up content creation. The participants were very enthusiastic about the training, with numerous direct interactions and question-and-answer sessions allowing them to consult directly with the resource persons. This activity not only provided new knowledge but also broadened the participants’ perspectives on how AI technology can be applied in education.

There are high hopes for this activity to be the beginning of similar initiatives in the future, aiming to continuously enhance technology literacy among educators and students. Thus, Al-Azhar Syifa Budi Solo Junior High School is expected to advance further in applying technology for learning and produce graduates ready to face challenges in the digital era. In this graduation period, FK UNS conferred degrees on 18 new specialist doctors. Among these graduates, four received scholarships from the Ministry of Health’s Tugas Belajar program, bringing the total number of scholarship recipients to 351 since the program began.

According to the academic report presented by the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Research, and Student Affairs, Paramasari Dirgahayu, dr., Ph.D., the 18 graduates are from various programs: one from the Cardiology and Vascular Medicine Program, seven from the Dermatology and Venereology Program, two from the Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy Program, six from the Pediatrics Program, and two from the Psychiatry Program.

Among the graduates, Nandia Permata Rahma Al Khusna, dr., Sp.A., from the Pediatrics Program, achieved the highest cumulative GPA of 3.88. The youngest graduate was Qeis Ramadhan, dr., Sp.A., also from the Pediatrics Program, who graduated at the age of 29 years and 2 months.

Representing the graduates, Satrio Pratomo, dr., Sp.A., encouraged his fellow graduates to remain humble and continue learning and serving, despite earning their specialist titles. “This graduation moment is the right time for us to reflect on ourselves. Do not become complacent and remain humble; our real struggle has just begun. Let’s dedicate the knowledge we have gained here for the benefit of our nation and country,” he said.

Dr. Satrio also reminded his peers to maintain professionalism as doctors. “Always communicate with patients with compassion and empathy to provide the best care. Continue participating in scientific activities and training to maintain our skills and professionalism. With this title, we carry the responsibility of upholding norms, ethics, and proper conduct to benefit Indonesian society wherever we serve,” he added.

Director of Dr. Moewardi Hospital Surakarta, Dr. Cahyono Hadi, dr., Sp.OG(K), advised the new specialist doctors to keep learning and expanding their knowledge.

“In the context of healthcare transformation, we hope to meet the demand for doctors. Considering the presence of foreign doctors now, you, as specialist graduates, will be competing for job opportunities. If you have the idealism to build the nation, you won’t be competing, but if your orientation is different, then these opportunities will become a competition,” he stated.

He also emphasized the importance of maintaining ethics, highlighting current concerns about ethical issues. “I hope you all can benefit society, be useful for the country, help reduce morbidity and mortality rates, and support the nation’s efforts in health promotion and prevention,” he concluded.

In his speech, Dean of FK UNS, Prof. Reviono, said that being a good doctor involves being a professional. “Professionalism comprises several components, such as competence. You have all been equipped with sufficient competence in every medical skill or diagnostic method. We have also exemplified responsibility towards the profession. For patient safety, we have also taught you, so all of this is the foundation for becoming a professional,” he remarked.

Prof. Reviono also advised the new specialist doctors, now alumni, to uphold the good name of UNS and maintain good relations with colleagues and their alma mater.

With this graduation, FK UNS has produced 1.878 specialist doctors since its establishment in 1976. These graduates are now serving across the country in various fields, including healthcare services, education, research, and as specialist doctors in government, private sectors, the military, and the police.

The four journals are Bestuur Journal, managed by FH UNS, which achieved Quartile 1 with an SJR of 0.38 in the subject area of Law. The Biodiversitas Journal, managed by FMIPA, in the subject area of Animal Science and Zoology, reached Quartile 2 with an SJR of 0.35. The Caraka Tani: Journal of Sustainable Agriculture, managed by FP UNS, in the subject area of Agricultural and Biological Sciences (miscellaneous), achieved Quartile 2 with an SJR of 0.34. Lastly, the Journal of Sains Tanah: Journal of Soil Science and Agroclimatology, also managed by FP UNS, in the subject area of Soil Science, reached Quartile 3 with an SJR of 0.24.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Mujiyo, S.P., M.P., Head of the Journal Development Implementation Unit (UPPJ) at the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) UNS, stated that the rankings in 2023 indicate that three journals have improved their Quartiles. The Bestuur Journal, previously in Quartile 3, rose to Quartile 1. The Biodiversitas Journal, previously in Quartile 3, rose to Quartile 2. The Caraka Tani: Journal of Sustainable Agriculture, previously non-quartile, rose to Quartile 2. Additionally, Sains Tanah: Journal of Soil Science and Agroclimatology experienced an increase in its SJR value.

He expressed that these achievements are very proud moments for the UNS academic community. This success also motivates other academic journal managers within UNS to develop and achieve international indexing.

“The UPPJ team consistently supports and guides academic journal managers to enhance the quality of their journals to meet international indexing standards,” Prof. Mujiyo said on Thursday (13/6/2024).

GoTrans, spearheaded by UNS students of the Kampus Mengajar program and HMP Sportiva, took place at the FKOR UNS courtyard and gymnasium. The festival featured several traditional games, including gobak sodor, boboyan (or untrakol), bakiak, bentengan, and tug-of-war. These games were chosen for their simplicity and because they are becoming less common among children.

The event was attended by notable figures including Prof. Dr. Sapta Kunta Purnama, M.Pd., the Dean of FKOR UNS; Dr. Rony Syaifullah, M.Pd., Vice Dean of Academics, Research, and Student Affairs at FKOR UNS; Dr. Pomo Warih Adi, S.Pd., M.Or., Head of the PJKR Study Program at FKOR UNS; Dr. Sri Santoso Sabarini, S.Pd., M.Or., course lecturer; Abdul Aziz Purnomo Sidiq, M.Pd., Coordinator of the Kampus Mengajar program; Drs. Budi Paryono, S.H., M.H., Chair of the Indonesian Recreational Sports Committee (KORMI) Surakarta; Sri Hastuti, S.Pd., KORMI Treasurer; and accompanying teachers from each participating elementary school.

The GoTrans event was officially opened by Prof. Sapta Kunta, who emphasized the importance of such activities for students to enjoy and develop a love for traditional sports. He highlighted that Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage includes traditional games, which are at risk of being forgotten in the modern era.

“With the GoTrans program, students not only learn about traditional sports but also help to preserve and sustain them for the future,” Prof. Sapta Kunta said.

Eight elementary schools from Surakarta participated in GoTrans, namely SDN Gebang 224, SD Muhammadiyah 18 Surakarta, SDN 1 Baturan, SDN Kestalan Surakarta, SDN Nayu Barat 1 Surakarta, SDN Sawahan 2 Surakarta, SDN Pucangan 05, and SDN Kasatriyan.

Each school sent representative teams to compete in the traditional sports competitions. The participating schools appreciated and supported the event, recognizing that the GoTrans program effectively introduced traditional sports to students.

The space at Solo is Solo is used to hold various events and art classes. One of them is the Can Painting Art Class with Axel and Bintang. Both are students of Fine Arts at FSRD UNS. They have experience in the world of painting. This activity took place at the Solo is Solo Gallery on the 1st floor at Gatot Subroto Street, on Saturday (23/3/2024).

The Can Painting Art Class was held in two sessions due to the large number of participants. The first session started at 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM and the second session took place from 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM. More than 20 enthusiastic participants joined the painting class on cans. The event became even more exciting.

Painting on used cans may be something new for some people. The surface of these cans tends to be smooth and somewhat difficult to paint on. However, the paintings produced on this medium are fascinating. He added that this activity can also train someone’s creativity and patience. The ideas they have can be applied to a work of art like these cans.

“The paintings on these cans are certainly interesting and can be used for useful items such as pencil holders, table decorations, candle holders, flower vases, or for storing money,” Dyah Yuni K., M.Sn. explained.

The use of recycled items as creative media is also an attraction for the MBKM Sekelas group. The activities they carry out revolve around environmental cleanliness, which is still often underestimated by many people. Recycled items that are often overlooked actually have the potential to be recycled into art products.

Used cans are certainly objects that are often encountered as waste. If we are not careful when sorting out the trash, then non-recyclable waste will become a pile of problems that result in environmental pollution. This will also damage the ecosystem around it.

Not only that, Imapres UNS also awarded outstanding students with the best achievements.

In her report, La Tansa Milata Hanifah, the Chairperson of Imapres UNS, mentioned that the series of the Student Achievement Selection (Pilmapres) 2024 was conducted from March 13, 2024, to its culmination on April 2, 2024. During the Pilmapres process, there were 25 participants from bachelor’s programs and 14 students from diploma programs. After undergoing orientation and final selection, 12 finalists were chosen from bachelor’s and diploma programs, with 6 finalists from each category.

Ana Fitri Andriani, S.Sos., M.I.Kom., the Coordinator of Academic and Student Affairs, appreciated Imapres as the organizer and all participants who took part in the Pilmapres 2024 series. Ana also congratulated the Pilmapres winners.

“I express my gratitude to the participants of Pilmapres 2024 and to Imapres as the organizer. Alhamdulillah, the event series has proceeded smoothly. Congratulations to all the winners. For those who did not succeed in becoming champions, do not lose hope, there is still time next year,” she said.

In this competition, FKIP UNS teams won first place in Local Culture Challenge, thanks to the hard work of Dyah Ajeng Pangesti Ayu Pamungkas and Karin Divya Putri. Another team, consisting of Zahro Septa Khoirissa, Wahyu Puspitasari, and Ica Klara Monica, won 3rd place in the Interactive Dialogue category. Zahro states that she was delighted with this accomplishment.
“We know about the challenge a little late. We only knew about it two weeks before the deadline. Hence, our focus is divided between completing class assignments and preparing an Interactive Dialogue article. A few days after, we received an announcement that our team had passed to the top five. Of course, we are thrilled to hear this,” said Zahro.

Another UNS team also won 3rd place under Citizenship Project Category. The members of the team were Khoirul Anwar Ali, Jasmine Jedida Juang, and Aji Pamungkas. Khoirul states that he considers youth as the golden time in life. Thus, it must be filled with knowledge and experiences.

“Youth is the golden time in our life. So, use your time to seek knowledge and experiences as much as you can because what has happened cannot be undone. Believe in your competency and do your best to achieve your dream. The best result will follow your best effort,” said Khoirul. Humas UNS
