The event began with a discussion on the work programs of ICMI Surakarta’s various sectors, including education, culture, national character development, collaboration, communication and digital transformation, as well as science and technology integrated with faith and morality.

For this early-year seminar, ICMI adopted the theme “Indonesia’s Socio-Economic Outlook and the Role of Muslims in Achieving Indonesia Emas 2045.” The seminar also served as the “Kick-Off Event” for ICMI Surakarta’s activities during the 2024–2029 period. This event was supported by Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI).

Emphasizing the Role of Muslims in Indonesia Emas 2045

On this occasion, Prof. Irwan Trinugroho, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., Chair of ICMI Surakarta, emphasized the importance of ICMI and the Muslim community’s role in achieving Indonesia Emas 2045. As the Vice Rector for Planning, Cooperation, Internationalization, and Information at UNS, he urged ICMI members to engage directly with society.

“Many seminars discuss Indonesia’s socio-economic conditions, but few address the role of Muslims in this context. ICMI Surakarta’s thoughts, ideas, and contributions in various fields need to be documented and disseminated through online media so the public and stakeholders can access them. Beyond ideas, ICMI Surakarta must actively engage with the community to ensure its benefits are felt by society,” Prof. Irwan said.

Insights from Seminar Speakers

Ibrahim Fatwa Wijaya, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., Director of the Directorate of Planning, Cooperation, Internationalization, and Reputation at UNS, moderated the seminar. The event featured three prominent speakers: Prof. Dr. H. Mudofir, S.Ag., M.Pd., a Professor at UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta; Prof. Dr. Muhammad Da’i, M.Si., Apt., Vice Rector for Finance, Assets, and General Administration at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS); and Tastaftiyan Risfandy, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., Vice Dean for Student Affairs and Alumni at FEB UNS.

Prof. Mudofir shared insights on the role of Muslims in environmental conservation, highlighting that the environmental crisis reflects a spiritual crisis. He stressed the need for Islamic institutions to focus on environmental preservation.
“It is crucial for scholars to develop thematic interpretations of environmental issues. This is necessary because many Muslims do not consider environmental conservation and its degradation as significant aspects that support worship and the afterlife. Scholars should also develop sermons addressing environmental preservation, the dangers of environmental damage, and sustainability. Therefore, we need environmental activists who can disseminate the role of religion in environmental conservation,” Prof. Mudofir said.

Prof. Da’i addressed leadership and the competitive edge of Muslims in science and technology, which still lag behind.
“Muslims should change their mindset, recognizing that worship extends beyond praying, reciting, and fasting. They should view activities like working, innovating, and studying, which occupy much of their time, as acts of worship as well. Additionally, to address the low competitiveness of human resources within the community, Muslims should empower those struggling to find employment,” Prof. Da’i explained.

Meanwhile, Risfandy, Ph.D., focused on Indonesia’s Islamic economics and poverty alleviation. “To address poverty and inequality among Indonesians, stakeholders should implement free education, provide free nutritious meal programs, and introduce initiatives in banking and mosques. These efforts should begin with families, serving as the foundation for educating their members,” Risfandy stated.

The visit began with a presentation highlighting UNS’s flagship programs that contribute to sustainable development, particularly in research and community service.

Rector Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr. M.Si., stated that UNS is committed to becoming a center of excellence in science, technology, and the arts at the international level, rooted in national cultural values.

“Currently, UNS has 76.153 students, 1.980 lecturers, and 1.831 administrative staff spread across 14 faculties and 2 schools. We also have three Centers of Excellence in Science and Technology (PUI), namely the Center for Electric Energy Storage Technology, the Javanology Center, and the Center for Fintech and Banking. In addition, UNS operates 24 study centers and the UNS Hospital, which has been serving the community since 2016,” Prof. Hartono explained.

Prof. Hartono emphasized UNS’s commitment to collaborating with the government to achieve inclusive and sustainable development goals. “We are ready to support various government programs through applicable research and impactful community service programs,” he added.

In his remarks, Prof. Dr. Rachmat Pambudy highlighted the vital role of higher education institutions in shaping a generation capable of innovation and contributing to national development.

“As one of Indonesia’s leading universities, UNS holds significant potential to produce research and technology that can support national development policies,” Prof. Rahmat said.

Prof. Rachmat also expressed his appreciation for UNS’s initiatives to enhance the quality of education and research at the national level.

The visit included discussions on potential collaborations between UNS and Bappenas, focusing on research-based development programs and the development of competent human resources across various fields.

“Bappenas and UNS previously established a Memorandum of Understanding, Number NKB/14/SES/03/2020 and Number 22/UN27/KS/2020, valid until March 30, 2025. As it nears expiration, we can look into renewing it. We hope this collaboration goes beyond mere formalities and is followed by concrete actions,” he remarked.

The event concluded with an exchange of souvenirs between UNS and the Minister of National Development Planning, followed by a group photo session featuring UNS leadership and the ministerial delegation.

Prof. Irwan, representing the leader of UNS, expressed his gratitude to Bank Indonesia for trusting UNS as the host of this event. “We are grateful that Bank Indonesia has chosen Universitas Sebelas Maret as the host of the Bank Indonesia Teaching under the theme of ‘Accelerating Economic and Financial Digitalization for Economic Recovery.’ This event is extraordinary because the Deputy of Bank Indonesia can attend today’s event in person,” said Prof. Irwan.

Related to the theme, Prof. Irwan explained that UNS has taken various initiatives in economic digitalization while striving to become a pioneer in digital transformation. The effort is implemented in several digital transformations, including the establishment of the Center for Excellence in Science and Technology (PUI) Fintech and Banking. UNS has also established the Faculty of Information Technology and Science Data to support data science education and technology for economic digitization. UNS, through the Faculty of Economics and Business, has also just opened a Digital Business study program, which is expected to prepare the best talent for digital transformation. “All of those efforts are dedicated to preparing superior talents in the digital economy, and it will be one of the prioritized programs by the Rector this year,” he added.

The Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia, Juda Agung, Ph.D. welcomed the initiatives. Dr. Juda said that it is necessary for Bank Indonesia to maintain synergy with other institutions. “Synergy with various parties is an effort that we need to implement in the process of digitization, OJK as a supervisor of the microfinance sector, Bank Indonesia as a supervisor in the payment system. In terms of data and information communication, it falls under the role of the Ministry of Communication and Information. Currently, a bill on personal data protection is under discussion. The point is that we must work together and synergize across all government and industry sectors,” Juda said.

On this occasion, Dr. Juda delivered material about the digital transformation implemented by Bank Indonesia. He said that economic digitalization increased rapidly during the pandemic, especially online economic activity, which doubled during the pandemic. The trend of such digital transactions continues post-pandemic situation. This trend can be seen from data released by Bank Indonesia on e-commerce payment methods in July 2022, which is dominated by electronic money by 36.15 percent, followed by cash by 34.25 percent, and pay-later by 12.80 percent. Indonesia is dubbed as a country that potentially has the largest e-commerce market in ASEAN in 2025, valued at 140 billion US dollars. With this potential, Indonesian human resources must be prepared to accept the digital economy transformation.

The need for excellent resources to welcome the 2025 transformation is in accordance with UNS programs. Thus, the synergy between UNS and Bank Indonesia is expected to grow stronger for preparing superior talents in the digital economy. Humas UNS

In his opening remark, Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, S.H., M.Hum., stated that in its 46 years old, UNS had served the country and the nation in numerous ways. Prof. Jamal also stated that the university had created numerous findings in science and technology to support the nation’s competitiveness and national development. UNS also received a new status as an autonomous university (PTNBH) on 6 October 2020 and opened its Ki Hadjar Dewantara Tower on 11 March 2022 as a supporting facility for UNS’ academic activities. The new tower itself was inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Indonesia (RI), Ir. Joko Widodo.

As mentioned by the Rector, the wayang performance is UNS’ effort to achieve its vision to become the center of science and technology development at the national and international level based on the noble values of the national cultures.

“Hopefully, this wayang performance that tells the story of Gatutkaca Kridha could teach us a lesson. This event is beneficial especially for the young generation because the story teaches (us) to remember the responsibility to build the country and how to become a young generation who understands the meaning of harmony and other positive values,” Prof. Jamal added.

Prof. Jamal greatly appreciated the hard work of the UNS 46^th Anniversary Celebration committee in preparing all events in the celebration series. The chairman of the committee and the Dean of the Faculty of Medical Science (FK) UNS, Prof. Dr. Reviono, dr., Sp.P(K) stated that this event achieves two objectives, celebrating the university anniversary while conserving the Javanese culture.

The performance was opened with the handover of paraga wayang or the set of wayang kulit puppets from Prof. Jamal to the dalang or the director of the performance, Ki MPP Bayu Aji.

Gatutkaca Kridha tells the story of Gatutkaca, a son of Pandawa, who showed his patriotic and chivalrous spirit from a young age. Gatutkaca is the righthand man for many gods for defeating the giant king of Prabu Pracona and Patih Sekipu, which provided him the opportunity to be the King of Purwacarita as his reward. Gatutkaca also received a blessing of “Wahyu Tamtama Jati” which means mighty formidable knight. Humas UNS

The inauguration ceremony is part of the series of activities on the UNS 46th Anniversary held in the Auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine (FK). The inauguration ceremony was also broadcasted through the UNS Official Youtube channel. Attending the ceremony were the Head of the UNS Leadership Board and the heirs of UNS academic members, whose name was enshrined as the name of the buildings on the UNS campus.

In his remarks, Prof. Jamal thanked all parties that inspired the naming of the buildings. Prof. Jamal hopes that the decision to use outstanding figures as building names on UNS will encourage all UNS academic members to know the figures and their services. “Hence, we altered the building name into excellent figures names with great legacy at the national, international, and regional at Universitas Sebelas Maret, who assisted UNS development tremendously,” said Prof. Jamal.

As the main event, the Rector Decree (SK) on Naming Buildings in the UNS Environment was read and witnessed by the UNS Leaders and heirs of the noble figures. The event continued with a video screening of the building name inauguration in each faculty and unit. In this event, UNS delivered award charters to all heirs of the mentioned figures’ names.

There are 28 buildings in the UNS environment inaugurated in the name following national figures and UNS figures. The monumentalization of selected figures’ names as the name of the building is an effort to remember their services and outstanding contribution to the progress of the UNS.

The ‘Capital Ship’ analogy was mentioned by President Jokowi because, at the age of 46 years, UNS already had about 40,000 students. This fact is known after President Jokowi asked the Rector of UNS, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho. “There are 40,000 students now, and it is equal to an aircraft carrier. It is enormous,” said President Jokowi.

However, the former Mayor of Surakarta asked UNS to be careful. The reason is that a vessel with a larger and wider body certainly requires a lot of effort to change direction or to take a turn. He hoped that UNS would be able to make significant changes even though it has an aircraft carrier status, as he said. President Jokowi also left a message for UNS to make changes quickly according to the needs of the times.

President Jokowi does not want the knowledge delivered by universities to students to be no longer relevant to real-life conditions. He wants UNS to answer this challenge by preparing the digitally literate Human Resources (HR). “To get there, what should we prepare? Indeed, we’re going to have to go all out. I want to remind UNS right at this time,” added President Jokowi.

Revamping Old Study Program

President Jokowi, on this occasion, also asked UNS and other universities to dare to revamp the study programs that are not relevant to the current era. Not only that, but the old research centers are also included to be revamped and replaced with a sophisticated one. Further, he said that science is growing so fast today, and all countries compete to pursue it. President Jokowi implies that he did not want state universities to fall behind in this “race.”

“HR development has to change, and it needs to be fast. Because as I said, all organizations, including higher education institutions and universities, must be agile, quickly learn according to the existing changes, and must be updated,” said President Jokowi. He targeted that the preparation of superior human resources can be done within two years before Indonesia faces a demographic bonus in 2030. If this target is not achieved, President Jokowi calls that there will be greater challenges for this country to face.

“We will be done for if we don’t change. For digital HR, digital talent must be developed. Because of all the ‘race.’ This huge vessel movement can not be nimble, but it can also show a refined and agile movement depending on the Captain,” concluded President Jokowi. The Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, SH, M.Hum., on this occasion delivered the university’s annual Report. One of UNS’s achievements is the collaboration developed with Solo Technopark for economic recovery efforts, especially in the creative economy sector. UNS has actively collaborated with Solo Technopark to build an applied education space and prepare MSMEs for onboarding their businesses directly at Indonesia’s creative economy unicorns through the creative economy sector. “The UNS commitment is symbolized by the inauguration of the 3rd UNS campus gate, which directly faces Solo Technopark,” said Prof.

The Report delivered by Prof. Jamal also exhibited various achievements that UNS has accomplished in the past year. UNS was included in the world-class universities ranking on various occasions, including Times Higher Education (THE) and QS World University Ranking. Other achievements involve the efforts to preserve the environment, education, research, and achievements from students.

The event was followed with the recitation of Rector Decree on the 2022 UNS Award “Parasamya Anugraha Dharma Bhakti Upa Bhaksana” by Prof. Dr. Bandi M.Sc., Ak., as Vice-Rector for General and Human Resources (HR). This award was given to Sri Mulyani Indrawati, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia (RI). The UNS Award was delivered directly by the Rector of UNS, accompanied by the Chairman of the Academic Senate.

On this occasion, Sri Mulyani also presented her scientific Oration. The Covid-19 Pandemic multidimensional crisis caused a tremendous impact. Indeed this also requires a multidimensional and extraordinary response. Sri Mulyani states that a crucial and significant instrument facing the pandemic and this multidimensional challenge is state finance, or the Indonesian State Budget (APBN).

Sri Mulyani added that the State Budget was present and worked very hard to protect the people from the threat of the pandemic, safeguard the community from the decline in welfare due to job loss, protect and restore the business world, especially small and medium-sized businesses, and protect and maintain the stability of the financial system.

At the end of her Oration, Sri Mulyani conveyed that there will always be a challenge every time, and every challenge has an answer. UNS is requested to continue its role as a Candradimuka crater in preparing those who will fight and struggle to maintain and build Indonesia for better, fairer, more advanced, and dignified.

The event continued with brief direction by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ir. Joko Widodo. The President conveyed the Government’s efforts in preparing Human Resources (HR) to face the rapid change. UNS and other higher education institutions are encouraged to transform and learn quickly along with the current development. The MBKM program is inseparable from the spotlight. The President appreciates this program that has facilitated students to learn from anywhere, anytime, and with anyone. “All organizations including higher education institutions, including universities, must be agile, quickly learn with existing changes, and stay updated. But be careful because the world is changing so fast, science is also developing so fast,” he explained.

After the delivery of the direction of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, the next event is a prayer recitation by Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Sajidan, M.Sc., as Vice-Rector of Planning, Cooperation, Business, and Information.
