Iwan Wisnu Anggono, S.S., M.Si., Head of Academic and Student Affairs at UNS, representing the Acting Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ahmad Yunus, M.S., expressed his pride in the achievements of the Bengawan Formula Student Team UNS and fully supports the team as they compete internationally. He also encouraged the team to enjoy the moment and the euphoria of the competition.

“Congratulations for the hard work of all team members over the past year in perfecting their creation, Nawasena, which will compete in Europe soon. We also thank the sponsors who have supported the students in preparing for this competition,” Iwan said in his speech at the Nawasena Launch Event on Wednesday (31/7/2024).

Prof. Venty Suryanti, S.Si., M.Phil., Ph.D., Director of the Directorate of Innovation and Downstreaming (DIH) UNS, who was also present representing the Acting Rector of UNS, wished the Bengawan Formula Student Team UNS success and smooth competition in Italy.

The Formula SAE Italy (FSAE) 2024 competition is a student formula competition organized by SAE International and ATA (Associazione Tecnica dell’Autoveicolo) at the Varano ‘de Melegari Circuit in Italy. The Bengawan Formula Student Team UNS will participate in two main events: the Dynamic Event and the Static Event.

“The team will compete in FSAE Italy 2024 from September 3 to 8. Nawasena will compete in the Combustion Vehicle class. There are two main events: Static Events, which include a business plan presentation, cost and manufacturing report, and design presentation, and Dynamic Events, which include acceleration, skid pad, autocross, and endurance categories,” Delon Sasongko, General Manager of the Bengawan Formula Student Team UNS, explained.

Jidhan Abdillah, the Technical Manager of the Bengawan Formula Student Team UNS, stated that to prepare for FSAE Italy 2024, Nawasena has undergone improvements from its predecessor, Pancawala 2. The biggest change in the car is the engine, as Nawasena now uses the KTM 450 SX-F 2020, which features an injection system.

“We have made many improvements to Nawasena, such as optimizing the suspension geometry calculations, steering loud, radiator, and reducing the car’s weight. Aerodynamic enhancements have been made to make it lighter and more dynamic. Nawasena also uses a honeycomb impact attenuator (IA) to optimize driver safety,” Jidhan explained.

The General Manager added that preparations for Nawasena to compete in FSAE Italy 2024 are about 80 percent complete, and UNS is the only team representing Indonesia in the competition.

Since 2024, Webometrics has ranked 32.000 higher education institutions worldwide. This ranking, conducted by Spain’s largest public research agency, is based on three main criteria: visibility, transparency, and excellence.

Visibility relates to the impact of the content uploaded on the university’s website. Transparency includes the list of the most cited researchers from the university.

Lastly, excellence relates to the most cited papers/studies from the university, with data considered over a five-year period from 2018-2022, sourced from Scimago.

The Acting Rector of UNS, Dr. Chatarina Muliana, S.H., S.E., M.H., expressed great appreciation for UNS’s seventh-place ranking by Webometrics. “This achievement is something to be grateful for. As the leadership of UNS, we thank all parties who have contributed to this accomplishment,” Dr. Chatarina said on Wednesday (31/7/2024).

Dr. Chatarina hopes this achievement will be improved in future periods, targeting UNS to be in the top 5 in Indonesia next year. “This is the result of the cooperation of all stakeholders on campus. Hopefully, UNS’s ranking in both Indonesia and the world will continue to improve,” she added.

The FKIP UNS delegation was led by Vice Dean for Planning, Cooperation, Business, and Information, Prof. Dr. Triyanto, S.H., M.Hum. Meanwhile, the LPPMP UNS delegation was headed by the Head of LPPMP UNS, Prof. Dr. Sarwiji Suwandi, M.Pd. Accompanying them were several FKIP UNS lecturers, including Prof. Dr. Suciati, M.Pd., Dr. Rusnaini, M.Si., Dr. Rima Vien Permata Hartanto, S.H., M.H., Yudi Ariana, S.H., M.H., Widya Noventari, M.Sc., and Anis Suryaningsih, M.Sc.

Prof. Dr. Triyanto, S.H., M.Hum., stated that the visit to the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia and TDTU was an effort to support the development of UNS. “Our collaboration with the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Vietnam is an effort to strengthen our international network, while the visit to TDTU is the implementation of our existing cooperation and an opportunity for our lecturers to present their research at an international forum. I believe these visits are crucial for supporting the development of UNS, especially FKIP,” Prof. Triyanto said.

During the visit, the delegation was warmly received by the Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, Agustaviano Sofjan. The Consulate General expressed a commitment to collaborate in enhancing the quality of education.

There are four areas of commitment for cooperation with the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia. These include opportunities to expand UNS’s international network with universities in Vietnam, internship opportunities for UNS students at the Consulate General, sending Vietnamese students to study at UNS, and access to collaboration with companies in Vietnam.

Meanwhile, at TDTU, the delegation was welcomed by the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Dr. Pham Thi Ha Thuong. The UNS delegation also participated in The 3rd International Conference on Innovations in the Social Sciences and Humanities (ISSH 2024) at TDTU as presenters and listeners. ISSH 2024 is a forum for exchange and collaboration between researchers and practitioners in Vietnam and around the world, discussing new developments in social sciences and humanities and encouraging creative ideas in educational activities and scientific research.

FKIP UNS has already a Letter of Intent (LoI) for cooperation with TDTU. Both FKIP UNS and TDTU are strongly committed to continuing to work together to strengthen the reputation of both universities.

Annisa’s participation in the Surakarta Genre Ambassador 2024 began with a desire to actively engage and show concern for the quality of life of her peers, regardless of their backgrounds. She also believed that joining the Surakarta Genre Ambassador would provide her with a platform to practice creative and innovative ideas, benefiting the wider community, especially in Surakarta.

“Why did I choose the Genre Ambassador? I wanted an active role and a caring principle that can help improve the lives of teenagers. Additionally, joining the Genre Ambassador is an opportunity for me to develop creative and innovative ideas to improve myself and provide benefits to the broader community,” Annisa, the Advocacy Winner of Surakarta Genre Ambassador 2024, said.

Annisa was chosen as the Advocacy Winner after going through various selection stages. Before becoming a finalist, she competed against 72 participants in the selection stages of document screening, written tests, and interviews. The document screening involved a thorough evaluation of personal data, vision and mission, organizational experience, and achievements. Annisa explained that the written test consisted of multiple-choice questions, short essays, and long essays about planned generation knowledge, health, and youth issues. The interview stage was divided into two parts: genre knowledge and self-potential.

“After a lengthy selection process, Alhamdulillah, I was declared a finalist for the Surakarta Genre Ambassador 2024 along with 19 other participants. Finalists were required to undergo HIV/AIDS and drug tests before proceeding to the next stage. We also underwent a two-week quarantine, during which we received training in public speaking, public testing, advocacy or work programs, talent tests, and rehearsals where we learned about genre knowledge, opening numbers, and opening dances in preparation for the grand final. We also participated in a deep interview stage,” Annisa explained to uns.ac.id on Friday (27/7/2024).

During the final night, Annisa continued to excel and made it to the top five finalists of the Surakarta Genre Ambassador 2024, where she had the opportunity to present a speech outlining her vision and mission if she were selected as the Genre Ambassador of Surakarta 2024.

“On the final night, Alhamdulillah, I was chosen as the Advocacy Winner for the Surakarta Genre Ambassador 2024. This title was awarded based on the public testing scores of the work program I proposed. The assessment was based on target accuracy, output, commitment to implementation, and the institutions involved. My work program, ‘Genre BerAKS,’, stands for a generation that is active, campaigns, socializes, and is informative,” Annisa expressed with gratitude.

She explained that her work program encourages a generation to be active in campaigns and socialization, and informative by participating in volunteer activities or conducting the “Ganting” or Stunting Prevention Movement. This program aligns with the urgent need in the community to address stunting, especially in Surakarta.

“The Genre BerAKSI program provides an opportunity for teenagers to play an active role in tackling the stunting problem by collaborating with posyandu cadres and health community institutions to directly engage in the field, offering counseling and monitoring to parents with children experiencing stunting,” she added.

The Advocacy Winner of the Surakarta Genre Ambassador 2024 emphasized that the stunting issue can be addressed and minimized by ensuring nutritious food, maintaining clean water sanitation, and fostering a healthy environment. She also called on all Indonesians to participate in “Ganting” and implement dedicated programs to strive for a stunting-free future.

This Inbound Visiting Professor program is fully supported by the 2023/2024 Higher Education Endowment Fund from LPDP through the Enhancing Quality Education for International University Recognition (EQUITY) Project. The Doctoral Program in Law at UNS was selected as the winner in the 2024 Inbound Visiting Professor Program selection.

The Inbound Visiting Professor event began with a welcoming remarks from the Dean of FH UNS, Prof. Dr. I Gusti Ayu Ketut Rachmi Handayani, S.H., M.M., who emphasized the importance of both agendas for the academic development of students. In her speech, Prof. Ayu also highlighted that this event is an effort to enhance the quality of education at UNS, improve the international academic atmosphere, increase international exposure for students, boost academic visibility and reputation on a global scale, and elevate the quality of research and scientific publications at UNS. The Inbound Visiting Professor event was also attended by the Head of the Doctoral Program in Law, Prof. Dr. Hartiwiningsih, S.H., M.Hum., and the Head of the Master’s Program in Law, Prof. Dr. Lego Karjoko, S.H., M.H., along with FH UNS postgraduate students from both S2 and S3 programs.

The Public Lecture was held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, featuring Prof. Dr. Mohd Rizal Bin Palil from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. “In this public lecture, Prof. Dr. Mohd Rizal Bin Palil discussed the topic “Environmental Tax Implementation – Legal Issues and Perspectives” which covered various essential concepts related to environmental tax, including basic tax concepts, basic models in environmental tax, Pigouvian Theory, Adam Smith’s Canons of Taxation, and comparisons between sustainable environments/energy savers and environmental taxes,” Prof. Ayu explained.

This event aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of postgraduate students in the field of law, particularly Environmental Law concerning the Abiotic Biotic Culture (ABC Environment). Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) is a corporate strategy/standard/guideline for achieving sustainable investment and business development based on environmental, social, and governance criteria. The environmental aspect focuses on natural resources such as energy efficiency, biodiversity, pollution mitigation, water usage, and climate change. The social aspect encompasses overall community welfare, including labor standards, wages, benefits, affordable housing, education, workforce diversity, racial justice, and health safety. In governance, the management of environmental and social issues should be well-handled, covering organizational structure, compliance oversight, political contributions and lobbying, and the prevention of bribery and corruption.

Following the public lecture, a Legal Research Methodology Training was also conducted on Sunday, July 14, 2024, with the same speaker. Prof. Dr. Mohd Rizal Bin Palil delivered a presentation on “Research Methods – Various Perspectives,” focusing on different types of research, research steps, data issues and perspectives, and his experiences as an external examiner. This training provided both practical and theoretical insights for students in developing and conducting legal research.

dr. Muhana began his research journey two years ago, focusing on neuroscience, neurology, and neurosurgery. His journey started with his thesis titled “Visual-spatial Intelligence and Learning Modality Preference for Neuroanatomy Comprehension Among Medical Students,” which was published in the Education in Medicine Journal (a Scopus Q2 indexed journal). “This research stemmed from my interest in addressing the challenges of neuroanatomy learning, which many medical students find difficult,” dr. Muhana explained on Thursday (25/7/2024).

During his education at UNS, he served as a research assistant in various departments, including the Department of Neurology under the supervision of Dr. Diah Kurnia Mirawati, dr., Sp.S(K), focusing on catamenial epilepsy and genetic mutations in photosensitive epilepsy. He also worked in the Department of Orthopedics under Dr. dr. Romaniyanto, Sp.OT(K) Spine, MARS, and Dr. dr. Tito Sumarwoto, Sp.OT(K), M.Kes., S.H., M.Hum., exploring the use of stem cells in peripheral nerve and spinal cord injuries. Additionally, he was a research and laboratory assistant in the Department of Anatomy under dr. Nanang Wiyono, M.Kes, primarily in the field of neuroscience.

dr. Muhana has also achieved several other accolades, such as winning the International Gold Medalist at the 5th World Young Inventors Exhibition 2021 with the invention “Effleurage Robot: Innovation Relaxation Robot to Reduce Labor Pain.” This project was guided by Dr. Revi Gama Hatta Novika, S.ST., M.Kes. and funded by the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) grant with support from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Indonesia. He was also a Semi-Finalist at the Hasanuddin National Medical Olympiad and Scientific Competition (HAMOSCO) 2021, won 2nd place in the Basic Medical Science Olympiad 2019 in Anatomy, and 1st place in the National Video Contest – LKTI LECRON 2019.

In addition to his academic achievements, dr. Muhana is active in various organizations and humanitarian projects. He served as the Coordinator for the UNS Covid-19 Vaccination Program, leading 240 committee members and 150 volunteers from 12 different faculties to distribute approximately 30.000 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine to the public around Surakarta. He also held positions such as Chief of Government and Non-Government Organizations in the Indonesian Medical Student Senate Association (ISMKI), Minister of Public Relations in the UNS Faculty of Medicine Student Executive Board (BEM), and chaired several national events like the “MILESTONE” National Symposium, Workshop, and Paper Competition, and Volunteer Coordinator for the Health Sector at the SDGs Youth Action for Samosir.

In this workshop, the History Education and Learning Research Group collaborated with two practitioners from PT. Yonkou Edu Tekno, Iwan Maulana, M.Pd., and Taufiq Subhanul Qodr, M.Pd. These practitioners shared their knowledge and skills in creating digital teaching materials and developing virtual tours as a medium for history education.

Before the main sessions began, the Head of the RG, Prof. Dr. Sariyatun, M.Pd., M.Hum., warmly welcomed the participants. She emphasized that this workshop is part of the university’s threefold mission, particularly in community service.

“We hope that through this workshop, history teachers will be able to master the digital skills needed to help their students learn history in a more engaging and interactive way,” Prof. Dr. Sariyatun said.

Additionally, the workshop was opened with an introduction from RG member Prof. Dr. Akhmad Arif Musadad, M.Pd. In his introduction, Prof. Arif highlighted the importance of integrating digital technology into history education. He stated that the use of digital technology allows students to explore historical events more deeply and interactively, opening new opportunities for teaching methods.

“There are various benefits to empowering digital technology in history education, such as wider access to learning resources, increased interactivity and student engagement, ease of collaboration and communication, personalized learning, and the development of 21st-century skills,” Prof. Arif explained.

The main activities of the workshop were divided into two sessions. In the first session, Taufiq Subhanul Qodr, M.Pd., presented the basic knowledge of designing engaging educational media, covering font selection, design, and color usage in educational media. Taufiq detailed the importance of graphic design in creating digital teaching materials, including the use of Canva and the principles of layout design.

The second session, led by Iwan Maulana, M.Pd., focused on creating digital teaching materials and virtual tours as history learning media. Participants engaged in hands-on practice using Canva and Hayzen to create digital teaching materials. They also learned to create simple virtual tours using the 360 Camera Panorama application and the Lapentor website. Iwan’s easy-to-understand explanations enabled participants to grasp the steps involved in making virtual tours, which they can further develop as digital history teaching tools. The history teachers were highly enthusiastic about improving their digital skills for use in their teaching processes.

Following this workshop, it is expected that high school history teachers in Surakarta will have proficient digital skills to create innovative and engaging teaching materials.

“The hope is that teachers will be able to use digital technology to make history lessons more interactive and enjoyable for students. This will make the implementation of the Independent Curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka) more effective, supporting inclusive, student-centered learning goals and preparing them to face the challenges of the digital era,” Prof. Arif added.

This community service initiative was led by Dr. Siti Khoiriyah, S.Si, M.Si., and included members Prof. Dr. Drs. Pranoto, M.Sc., Dr. Widya Mudyantini, M.Si., Dr. Chanel Tri Handoko, M.Sc., and Dr. Widodo Aribowo, M.A. The event began with remarks from the Head of the UNS Environmental Science Doctoral Program, Prof. Dr. Drs. Pranoto, M.Sc. In his speech, he emphasized that waste has value and requires skills and technology for proper management. “We encourage participants, who are waste bank managers from Sukoharjo Regency, to continuously improve their waste management capabilities,” Prof. Pranoto said.

Agus Suprapto, S.T., M.T., Head of the Sukoharjo Environment Agency, noted in his opening remarks, that the people of Sukoharjo have become increasingly aware and concerned about waste management in their area. The Waste Bank Community is always striving to enhance its role in waste management. “This event was attended by 40 waste bank managers from across Sukoharjo Regency,” Agus Suprapto explained.

The event began with presentations and discussions on household waste management from the National Innovation and Research Agency, delivered by Dr. Sri Wahyono and Ir. Firman L. Sehwan. The discussion was intense and engaging, with several participants asking questions about their experiences in household waste management.

 Dr. Wahyono started his presentation by explaining that several landfill sites have been closed recently. Cities like Bandung and Yogyakarta have been declared waste emergencies, akin to having a closed WC, prompting questions about where to dispose of household waste. Due to this concern, household waste management must be more actively pursued to reduce waste generated by households. Various techniques in waste management were discussed, such as Biopore Infiltration Holes (LRB) with its variants Loseda and Teba, aerobic and semi-aerobic composters, Liquid Organic Fertilizer (POC), biogas, Eco-enzyme fermenters, Eco-bricks, handmade crafts, and waste banks. The presentation continued with a practical session on making innovative eco-enzyme fermenters, with the results given to the training participants.

The training participants expressed their enthusiasm for the event and expressed their hope for intensive training to enhance their waste management skills. These participants have already formed a community of Waste Bank managers under the guidance of the Sukoharjo Environment Agency, with the hope of staying motivated and enthusiastic in managing waste in Sukoharjo Regency.

Dr. Ahsan, Head of the Master’s Program in Special Education at the Faculty of Education, Universitas Negeri Malang, delivered a presentation on Strategies for Supporting Students with Disabilities. According to Dr. Ahsan, there are various types of disabilities among university students, including visual, hearing, and physical impairments. Each student with a disability has unique characteristics, requiring different approaches to support.

In general, support for students with disabilities can be categorized into academic and non-academic areas. Academic support includes assistance during new student admission, academic administration, coursework, and thesis preparation. Non-academic support involves helping students find accommodation and fostering social connections and community involvement.

Dr. Ahsan emphasized that the goal of supporting students with disabilities is to reduce the barriers they face and enhance their participation in all campus activities.

“Supporting students with disabilities aims to reduce the obstacles they encounter and increase their involvement in all campus activities,” Dr. Ahsan explained.

Interacting with students with disabilities also requires adherence to specific etiquette. For instance, when interacting with visually impaired individuals, it is important to introduce oneself and offer assistance before making physical contact, such as touching or guiding, if that helps.

Similarly, when communicating with individuals with cerebral palsy, one should speak clearly and be willing to ask for repetition if something is not understood, without interrupting or rushing the conversation.

It is worth noting that UNS has long committed to being a disability-friendly campus. Notably, in 2021, UNS received an Inclusive Award as one of the inclusive campuses. This educational accolade was presented by the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia to the UNS Rector.

In his opening remarks, Drs. Harjana, M.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., Dean of FMIPA UNS, stated that the seminar aimed to support the inclusive campus policy and create a comfortable learning environment for students with disabilities. Additionally, it aimed to enhance the understanding of disability issues among the academic community and ensure the provision of necessary facilities and infrastructure.

“This seminar aims to support the inclusive campus policy, create a comfortable learning environment for students with disabilities, and enhance the understanding of disability issues among the academic community,” concluded Harjana.

Anindya and Ivan focused on agriculture in this competition. Their innovative idea, the Solar-Powered Ultrasonic Rat Repellent (SIRKUS), addresses the issue of rat infestations in rice fields, which significantly reduce rice production. This, in turn, affects the economy of farmers and rice traders.

The SIRKUS device harnesses solar energy to activate various components, including an ultrasonic speaker. This type of wave disrupts the hearing of rats in the rice fields, causing them to leave the area and thus protecting the rice crops.

“SIRKUS is a rat repellent device for rice fields that utilizes solar energy, converting it into electrical energy to power components like Arduino Uno, passive infrared sensors, and speakers that emit ultrasonic waves to disturb the rats’ hearing,” Ivan explained to uns.ac.id on Tuesday (16/7/2024).

Through the SIRKUS concept, they noted the year-round availability of sunlight in Indonesia. This energy is economical and emission-free. The cost of designing this device is also much more economical with a longer lifespan compared to using pesticides or other chemicals, which are harmful to the environment and less efficient.

They developed this idea considering the need for society to adopt more sustainable and economical methods in the era of globalization. SIRKUS is a contribution towards supporting SDG point 9 and enhancing food self-sufficiency in Indonesia.

“The rat repellent will be more effective and quicker, maintaining ecological balance by driving rats away instead of exterminating them,” Ivan added.

The Faperta Fair 5 left a positive impression on them. Gabriela acknowledged the many brilliant ideas from all the finalists. This competition made her realize that there are many areas that can be developed to achieve a progressive Indonesia. Ivan was also impressed by the opportunity to meet students from various regions of Indonesia.

“Seeing the enthusiasm of students from various universities inspires us to contribute even more to Indonesia’s development,” Gabriela said.

UNS Wins Overall Championship

UNS was also crowned the overall champion after its students won first and third place in the essay category and a gold medal in the poster category. The third-place essay winners were three Agribusiness students: Anindya Keysha Mega Kauna, Bre Syarestaji, and Valerina Nara Christiantia. Their team proposed funding acceleration for Integrated Waste Processing Sites (TPST) to mitigate the impact of waste accumulation and leachate pollution.
