Before the walk commenced, the Acting Rector of UNS, Dr. Chatarina Muliana Girsang, S.H., S.E., M.H., led the participants in a group exercise at the KPRI UNS Office Courtyard. Dr. Chatarina was accompanied by vice rectors, directors, and deans from various faculties within UNS. She emphasized the crucial role cooperatives play in the Indonesian economy. For 77 years, cooperatives have actively contributed to the welfare of society, particularly for their members. Within the university context, cooperatives play an equally important role in supporting the welfare of UNS lecturers and staff.

The healthy walk event is a tangible demonstration of our commitment to supporting the cooperative movement and raising awareness about the importance of a healthy lifestyle. In addition to fostering camaraderie, this event aims to strengthen the sense of togetherness and solidarity among the entire UNS academic community.

“I appreciate the initiative of KPRI UNS in organizing this event. I hope activities like this can continue to be held annually, involving more participation from the entire UNS academic community. This will undoubtedly strengthen the sense of family among UNS campus members,” Dr. Chatarina said.

On this 77th Cooperative Day, she called on everyone to continue supporting and developing cooperatives within UNS. Dr. Chatarina is confident that with strong cooperation and commitment, we can create better and more competitive cooperatives. Let cooperatives not only enhance collective welfare but also serve as a means to achieve UNS’s vision and mission of being a superior and high-quality university.

“In conclusion, I wish everyone a pleasant healthy walk. May this event run smoothly and successfully, providing maximum benefits to all of us. Let’s maintain our health, togetherness, and family spirit within UNS,” she added.

EMOKIDS was developed by Ananda Putra Kanieza from the Electrical Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering (FT); Siti Nurohmahwati from the Physics Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP); and Ade Rifky Setiawan from the D-3 Informatics Engineering Study Program, Vocational School (SV).

The development of this tool stemmed from the UNS students’ concern about the difficulties faced by children with autism in expressing emotions. With their background in education and technology, they decided to create an innovative solution.

“Our main goal is to help educators in special schools identify and respond to the emotions of autistic children more efficiently. EMOKIDS is specifically designed to support the learning process and social interaction of autistic children. Educators can provide better attention and support according to their special needs,” Ananda, the team leader, said to uns.ac.id on Thursday (25/7/2024).

Under the guidance of Dr. Eng. Faisal Rahutomo, S.T., M.Kom., EMOKIDS is designed to identify and monitor the emotions of children with autism in real-time. The device uses a combination of image processing and voice recognition technologies.

“There is a machine learning algorithm to detect changes in facial movements, eye expressions, and body language of children with autism related to various emotions. The obtained data is then processed and displayed through a mobile application that is easy for parents and educators to use,” Ananda added.

The advantage of this tool lies not only in detection and alerts but also in its preventive approach. EMOKIDS helps educators plan appropriate interventions. Educators can create a conducive learning environment for autistic children. Additionally, this technology has been integrated into a single prototype, making it more affordable. The device also supports the development of technology tailored to the needs of autistic children in educational settings.

Their success is proof that technological innovation can make a real contribution to the field of education, especially in Special Education (PLB). They hope that the research and development of EMOKIDS can continue to grow and provide even greater benefits to society.

The post EMOKIDS: Emotion Detection Device for Children with Autism by UNS PKM-KC Team appeared first on Universitas Sebelas Maret.

The workshop, held in a hybrid format, was a collaboration with the CREATE for STEM Institute, Michigan State University, USA. The training took place in two sessions, the first on June 15-16, 2024, and the second on July 16-18, 2024.

The aim of this workshop was to enhance the Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) skills of Science and Biology teachers. It focused on STEM-based learning in genetics, using diabetes as a case study, under the title Health in Our Hands. This theme is one of the Integrative Science Learning Designs based on Project-Based Learning, aligned with Education for Sustainable Development and promoting one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The introduced learning design equips teachers with skills in teaching Scientific Modelling and argumentative thinking as the basis for explaining scientific phenomena. Besides learning about teaching, teachers were also trained to develop learning tools for marketing on the Teachers Pay Teachers website, a USA-based platform for educational products.

The first session of the workshop featured Dr. Consuelo Juliette Morales, Ph.D., M.Ed., M.P.H., from Michigan State University, USA, who developed the HiOH Lesson Unit. The online session was attended by 250 participants and covered topics on inheritance, genetic and environmental interactions in diabetes, and individual and communal actions students can take as part of sustainable development.

The second session involved 50 Science teachers from Surakarta’s Junior High School Teacher Association and Biology teachers from Senior High Schools Teacher Association. This session was held in Building D of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) UNS.

The workshop was opened by the Head of PKMI, Murni Ramli, S.P., M.Si., Ed.D., who provided material related to daily diabetes cases and their causes using the HiOH Lesson Unit from Michigan State University.

Next, Dr. Meti Indrowati, S.Si., M.Si., a lecturer in Human and Animal Anatomy and Physiology from the Biology Education Study Program FKIP UNS, gave an in-depth presentation on diabetes. One activity in HiOH learning is teaching students to determine if they have diabetes. Therefore, on the first day, participants practiced blood sugar and blood pressure checks.

The second day of the workshop was led by Febriani Sarwendah Nugrahaeni, S.Pd., M.Pd., who presented material on genetics, environmental influences, and their interactions in diabetes cases, accompanied by practical exercises and online simulations.

“Practicals are fundamental in helping students understand the process of testing hypotheses about the causes of diabetes and equipping them with the ability to explain scientific phenomena with proper reasoning,” Febriani said.

The results of the HiOH Lesson Unit training were developed into tools for marketing on the Teachers Pay Teachers website. Guidance was provided by Chandra Adi Prabowo, S.Pd., M.Pd., who conducted training on creating educational media using Canva.

Participants were highly enthusiastic about the training, as evidenced by the numerous direct interactions and questions. Eko Setyaningsih S.Pd., M.Si., from SMAN 5 Surakarta, expressed great enthusiasm for the workshop.

“Through this training, we have gained many references for providing more creative learning for students. Previously, we thought our teaching was already helping students think critically, but this training has given us a better understanding of how to make learning more engaging. We hope there will be similar activities in the future to help us become more creative teachers,” Eko Setyaningsih said.

The uniqueness of this workshop lies in the integration of immersive technology, such as virtual reality, in creating digital teaching media. Participants were invited to create engaging educational content using the Canva platform, optimized with AI assistance. This AI technology allows teachers to design interactive and visual teaching media without needing advanced design skills. The CoSpaces Edu platform also enables educational content to be packaged in immersive technology, providing a more engaging learning experience for students.

Eko Harry Pratisto, S.T., M.Info.Tech., Ph.D., Head of the D3 Informatics Engineering Program at SV UNS, emphasized the importance of technology literacy for educators and students in this digital era. “AI is not just the technology of the future, it is already a part of our daily lives. Through this activity, we hope to provide new insights and skills to teachers and students in utilizing AI for learning,” he said.

Maya Irawati, S.Si., Headmaster of Al-Azhar Syifa Budi Solo Junior High School, also expressed high appreciation for the Immersive Technology Research Group from the D3 Informatics Engineering Program at SV UNS for their initiative. “This activity is very beneficial for us, as it can improve the quality of learning and provide new experiences for teachers and students. We hope this collaboration can continue and be implemented at various educational levels under Al Azhar Syifa Budi Solo,” Maya Irawati said.

This community service activity was conducted to address issues faced by teachers, particularly in developing teaching media amidst the rapid technological advancements today. Teachers are required to quickly create teaching media while maintaining academic rigor.

The main material was delivered by Ovide Decroly Wisnu Ardhi, S.T., M.Eng., who provided training on creating teaching media using Canva. Ovide explained various Canva features that can help teachers design teaching media easily and efficiently, aided by AI technology to speed up content creation. The participants were very enthusiastic about the training, with numerous direct interactions and question-and-answer sessions allowing them to consult directly with the resource persons. This activity not only provided new knowledge but also broadened the participants’ perspectives on how AI technology can be applied in education.

There are high hopes for this activity to be the beginning of similar initiatives in the future, aiming to continuously enhance technology literacy among educators and students. Thus, Al-Azhar Syifa Budi Solo Junior High School is expected to advance further in applying technology for learning and produce graduates ready to face challenges in the digital era. The team of lecturers involved in this activity included Febriani Fajar Ekawati, S.Pd., M.Or., Ph.D., Dr. Nur Arifah Drajati, M.Pd., and Sugini, S.Pd., M.Pd. The event was attended by teachers and principals from special schools (Sekolah Luar Biasa, or SLB) ranging from elementary to secondary levels in Central Java. Febriani Fajar Ekawati, S.Pd., M.Or., Ph.D., mentioned that the aim of this event was to enhance multimodal literacy among teachers in inclusive schools along with their photography skills and marketing strategies to increase competitiveness.

The event began with an activity report by the event coordinator and the Head of the Teacher Professional Development Division of TEFLIN, Dr. Nur Arifah Drajati, M.Pd. In her speech, she expressed her hope that the results of this activity would introduce participants to multimodality and could be implemented in their respective schools.

The event featured three main presentations. The first presentation, titled “Publikasi Karya untuk Meningkatkan Nilai Ekonomi Karya PDBK sebagai Persiapan Kehidupan Pasca Sekolah” (Publication of Works to Increase the Economic Value of PDBK Works as Preparation for Life After School) was delivered by Sugini, S.Pd., M.Pd. She is a lecturer in Special Education (PLB) at UNS and a member of the community service team. In her presentation, she explained that children with special needs (ABK) have skills that can be developed through Multimodal Literacy activities.

“Children with special needs or ABK have various skills that can be developed through appropriate education and training. Multimodal Literacy activities are an example of education and training that can enhance ABK’s skills in expressing themselves through various media, thereby strengthening public confidence in their abilities,” Sugini explained.

The second presentation was delivered by Prof. Victor Lim Fei, an associate professor at the National Institute of Education, Singapore. He presented material titled “Multimodal Literacy for Teachers in Inclusive Schools.”

He explained that multimodality can be used to learn various subjects specifically and present them in different media. He also shared ideas on designing learning with multimodality based on his research, which participants could later adapt to inclusive teaching.

The final presentation was by Abdurrahman Hakim, S.Sos., owner of Searah Foto, who delivered material on “Basic Photography.” In his presentation, he introduced the basics and fundamental techniques of photography. Afterwards, he accompanied participants in practicing photography around Gedung Djoeang 45 Solo.

The community service event concluded with reflections from the participants. Ardhika Yusuf Bakhtiar, S.Pd., a participant from SLB C YPLB Danyang Purwodadi, appreciated the relevance and necessity of this training in teaching entrepreneurship in special schools.

The final products of this activity include scientific publications in ISSN journals, books, and events to be uploaded on YouTube. By designing these final products as attractively as possible, the goal is to maximize their impact and reach a wider audience. These publications aim to contribute to the scientific community, ensuring that the findings and knowledge gained from this activity are disseminated effectively and widely, thereby promoting greater understanding and application in the relevant fields.

The UNS Surakarta chapter marked the culmination of the Baluran National Park Roadshow across various prominent universities in Indonesia. The event featured keynote speaker Prof. Dr. Satyawan Pudyatmoko, S.Hut, M.Agr.Sc., Director of the Directorate General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE) at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, along with several researchers. The speakers were experienced individuals with extensive research backgrounds in Baluran National Park.

The event aimed to introduce the various potentials and cooperation opportunities of Baluran National Park for research, work programs, and education to the UNS academic community. As a conservation area dedicated to the protection and preservation of natural resources and ecosystems, Baluran National Park offers significant potential and challenges. This provides great opportunities for academics and researchers to assist in the management of this conservation area.

Baluran National Park, one of Indonesia’s oldest national parks, is a conservation area with original ecosystems and abundant biodiversity. This richness requires extensive research to ensure effective and successful natural resource preservation and conservation efforts.

The park boasts 15 types of ecosystems, various wildlife species, and thousands of plant species. There is still untapped bioprospecting potential, necessitating research to utilize genetic resources for the nation’s advancement and societal well-being.

UNS, with its excellent human resources and comprehensive facilities, is well-positioned to contribute valuable research findings. The university offers Environmental Science programs from undergraduate to doctoral levels, and a Forestry undergraduate program, which require platforms for learning and research. UNS academics in related fields can explore natural resource management in Indonesia for scientific advancement and national benefit.

During this event, the Environmental Science Program and the Faculty of Agriculture (FP) at UNS agreed to collaborate with Baluran National Park in developing the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) initiative. This declaration included agreements on research development and conservation efforts. The collaboration agreement was witnessed by the Director-General of KSDAE and UNS Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation, Prof. Dr. Kuncoro Diharjo, S.T., M.T.

“We share a commitment to preserving the environment and raising awareness of the importance of maintaining natural ecosystems,” Prof. Kuncoro said.

Following the declaration, joint program planning will commence, providing opportunities for the UNS academic community to conduct scientific and environmental research.

The objective of this collaboration is to enhance and foster institutional relationships, partnerships, and mutual support between the parties in conducting educational enhancement activities. This agreement formalizes the activities previously carried out by both parties.

It is noteworthy that several FMIPA students, particularly from the Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, and Environmental Science programs, have participated in the Bangkit Academy activities since 2023. Adrianus Yoza Aprilio mentioned this during the event.

“I would like to thank FMIPA students for their active participation in the Bangkit Academy program organized by Dicoding. I hope more FMIPA students will be involved in the future. This collaboration will benefit both parties,” Adrianus said.

Bangkit is a program under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, specifically designed by Google and fully supported by GoTo and Traveloka. It has a significant impact on aspiring digital talents in Indonesia. The program, affiliated with the Kampus Merdeka– Studi Independen Bersertifikat (or Certified Independent Study), is expected to continue benefiting students across Indonesia.

During their time at Bangkit, participants receive comprehensive training in one of three career-oriented technology skills: machine learning, mobile development, and cloud computing. Bangkit is equivalent to 20 credits and takes place online for 20 weeks, totaling over 900 hours of learning in the even semester of 2024.

The Dean of FMIPA, Drs. Harjana, M.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., also expressed hopes that the partnership with Dicoding would benefit both parties, especially by providing students with more exposure to the professional world and the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge.

“I hope this collaboration allows students to implement the knowledge they have acquired during their studies. During the Bangkit program at Dicoding, participants work on projects at the end of the program under the guidance of the best team,” Harjana said.

Both Harjana and Adrianus Yoza Aprilio hope that the Kampus Merdeka– Studi Independen Bersertifikat (or Certified Independent Study) program will continue. Its benefits are highly appreciated in the educational sector, preparing graduates to be ready for the workforce.
