Head of UNS UPT KLI, Rino Ardhian Nugroho, S.Sos., M.T.I., Ph.D., stated that “UNS Goes to Village” is part of the cultural orientation initiated by KLI to provide a platform for understanding Indonesian culture, values, and customs for international students.

“UNS Goes to Village” in 2024 was held on Thursday (16/5/2024) and Friday (17/5/2024) at the Janggan Village Hall, Poncol District, Magetan Regency. The Head of Janggan Village, Hariyadi, warmly welcomed the activity. The students then visited SD N Janggan and MI N 14 Magetan to interact with them. Their arrival was enthusiastically greeted by the students who presented a Reog dance as a form of welcome.

In addition to interacting with students, international students also visited several home industries in the village, including tempeh, banana chips, and sermier chip production. This activity provided a firsthand experience for the students to learn about the process of making local food.

“To delve deeper into village life, students were divided into several groups and stayed with their host families who are local residents. In the evening, they enjoyed and learned the Reog dance, which is one of the cultural treasures of East Java,” Rino explained.

On the second day, the activities continued with exploring nature to fields to practice planting peanuts, visiting a cattle farm, and learning about livestock management. The event concluded with a workshop on playing lesung (a traditional rice pounding tool) with members of the Sekolah Lansia Tangguh (or Selatang), which is one of the empowerment programs for the elderly in the village.

The “UNS Goes to Village” program not only provides cultural insights to international students but also introduces villagers to the diversity of world cultures. “It is hoped that this activity can enhance understanding and appreciation of Javanese local culture and strengthen the relationship between international students and the local community,” Rino added.

This event invited two speakers, namely Prof. Dr. Mohd. Fuad Mat Jali as Honorary Professor of Geopolitical at UKM and Associate Professor Dr. Novel Anak Lyndon as the Chairman of the Social, Environmental, and Developmental Sustainability Research Center (SEEDS). This speech also invited Dian Cita Putri as moderator and Nadhifa Nurul Arsyarayni as host; both are IISMA Awardees at UKM.

The event was opened by the Coordinator of the Americas and Oceania Region, UPT KLI UNS, Feri Setyowibowo, Ph.D. He advised that students who want to continue their studies at the UKM or choose UKM as a destination for IISMA, from now on, must prepare themselves with English proficiency. “Grab the opportunity. Don’t wait any further. Prepare your English from now,” said Feri.

The first speaker, Prof. Mohd. Fuad Mat Jali, explains the material about the UKM profile and the facilities in it. UKM was first established in 1970. UKM is currently ranked 33rd in Asian University Rankings, 129 in QS World University Rankings, and 601-800 in THE World University Rankings. Further, Prof. Mohd. Fuad explained that there are five best academic areas in UKM. “The five best academic programs in UKM are Art and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Science and Medicine, Natural Science, and Social Science and Management,” explained Prof. Mohd. Fuad. UKM currently has 69 undergraduate programs and 481 postgraduate programs. Meanwhile, some of the facilities provided by UKM include a gymnasium, student service center, cafe, academic heritage museum, tennis court, futsal field, golf course, lake, and swimming pool.

The following material was delivered by Associate Professor Dr. Novel Anak Lyndon on the introduction of the UKM campus, as well as the requirements for admission to the UKM postgraduate program. One of the requirements that must be met is that prospective postgraduate students must have at least a 6.0 IELTS score. “For IELTS scores, minimum 6.0. But don’t worry, if you haven’t met the minimum score and you are admitted to the UKM, there are English courses available provided,” he explained.

Aside from the material presented by the two speakers, there was an experience-sharing session from Dian, who was an IISMA Awardee in 2021, and Nadhifa, who is an IISMA Awardee in 2022, who will be deployed in October.
