UNS — The Team of Holistic Program for Village Assistance and Empowerment (PHP2D) Student Association of Mathematics Program (Himatika) Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science (FMIPA) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta conducted community empowerment at Jatirejo Village, Jumapolo Subdistrict, Karanganganyar District, Central Java Province. The Team will empower and provide assistance in the development of the local potential of mushroom commodities, including oyster and wood ear mushrooms. Besides their potential, the location is also selected according to the requirement from PHP2D that regulate empowerment site to be located no further than 100 km or 2 hours of driving (29 km from UNS campus).

The PHP2D Himatika FMIPA UNS Team Leader, Bayu Purboutomo, explained that the mushroom potential in Jatirejo Village is overabundant, but the majority of farmers sell their mushroom directly, while they could process the mushroom into various food products.

“Moreover, in the pandemic situation, many mushroom products cannot be stored for a long time without pre-processed,” Bayu Purboutomo explained to uns.ac.id team on Wednesday (24/11/2021).

Considering the large post-harvest potential of the mushroom, the Team proposed an upstream to downstream program for mushroom production that consists of pre-processing of mushrooms into processed products to product marketing training. The Team also developed the baglog wastes into organic fertilizer. Some of the already implemented programs are mushroom processing into crispy mushrooms in Mungon-Mojodipo Hamlet, Jatirejo Village. This program was proposed to PHP2D 2021 and was started with socialization on working capital lending from PT. BKK Jawa Tengah branch Karanganyar.

The mushroom processing process could increase local people’s income, while the socialization aims to explain various services provided by PT. BKK Jawa Tengah that support local people’s innovation in the mushroom processing industry. PHP2D Himatika FMIPA UNS Team also conducted the fertilizer production training from baglog in an online program through the Zoom Meeting platform in the same hamlet. Both processing and fertilizer production training was attended by the mushroom farmers group and program implementing team.

The fertilizer production training was opened with an explanation on mushroom cultivation dan organic fertilizer production by the Agricultural and Fishery Office of Karanganyar District represented by Feriana Dwi Kurniawati, S.P., M.Si. In this socialization, the office shared that Karanganyar District has a program to assist and facility for farmers through her office. The training also educates the local people on the environmental impact of mushroom cultivation and empower them to produce fertilizer from baglog.

After the training programs that took around five months, the Team launched Jare Jamur product on Sunday (21/11/2021) in Jatirejo Village Hall under the theme of “Kula Nuwun Jatirejo: Launching Produk Jare Jamur” (Excuse Me Jatirejo: Launching of Jare Jamur Product). The grand closing event started with product introduction followed by handover from the Head of Mathematics Program to the Chief of Processing and fertilizer team of Jatirejo people. The launching was marked with a ribbon cutting ceremony by Jatirejo Village Chief Arry Widodo Yuliawan and the Head of Mathematics Program FMIPA UNS, Dr. Drs. Siswanto, M.Si. Humas UNS

UNS — The Holistic Village Empowerment and Development Program (PHP2D) from the Student Association in Agricultural Extension & Communication Program (HM Pelita) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta implemented an integrated farming step by creating a biofloc pond. The 15 people group implemented their program in Kragan Village, Gondangrejo Subdistrict, Karanganyar District that is aligned with their PHP2D HM Pelita UNS 2021 proposal.

Novianto Yoga Wibisono, the PHP2D HM Pelita UNS Team Leader, stated that the biofloc pond could be used to cultivate 2,500 catfish seeds. The wastewater from the ponds is used for fertilizer in cultivating organic water spinach by the pool. “The tools needed to build the pond are pond base framework, rice husk, sand, and cement,” he explained to the uns.ac.id team on Monday (22/11/2021).

The program received a positive response from the village government and all village people. Kragan Village Chief, Widada, S.E., stated that his village and its government fully support all the positive activities held in the village.

The construction process was supervised by Sapto and Sarjono as the person in charge of Kragan Village biofloc development. The construction started with building the biofloc pond with a diameter of 2.5 meters, filling the pond with water, left behind the water for a week before adding the catfish seeds to ensure that the water was purified.

The water is then filtered and channeled through a drip fertigation system to irrigate chili plants around the biofloc pond owned by Kragan Village. The irrigation was prepared using pipes, PE hose, faucet, aquarium pump, T pipes, and L pipes. All of the stages are to support the integrated farming program implemented beforehand. The team added a zero-waste concept the reduce farming wastes.

The programs were expected to be implemented by all village people, especially in the application of zero waste to support sustainable farming. Humas UNS

UNS — The Students Executive Board (BEM) for the Faculty of Agriculture (FP), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a national webinar entitled ‘Community Development Summit (COMDES) 2021’ on Saturday (3/7/2021). The event that was held through the Zoom Cloud Meeting and FAPERTA BEM UNS YouTube Livestream, takes on the topic of ‘Optimization of Millennials Generation in Village Empowerment to support Village SDGs.’
The webinar was led by Nugroho Hasan and inviting two main speakers namely, Rudy Suryanto, S.E., M. Acc., Ak., CA., and Dr. Sapja Anantanyu, S.P., M.Si. Rudy Suryanto (founder of bumdes.id) delivers the first material on optimization of the millennials generation to achieve institutionalization.

Rudy explains that there are two reasons why the young generation must return to villages. The first is to use the pandemic momentum to transform the nation’s objectives and returning national ideals. According to him, there are five challenges in the management of a sustainable Village-Owned Enterprise (Bumdes). “They are institutionalization, business model, governance and management, resources management, as well as accountability and control,” he explains.

Empowerment and collaboration are needed because Bumdes is an entity that aims to facilitate collective business. Rudy added that the campus can take roles under this circumstance. First, a campus can select the Micro, Small, and Medium enterprises that are ready to receive assistance. The second is well-prepared process and supervision, and the third role available is good output quality and assurance
The second speaker, Dr. Sapja Anantanyu, S.P., M.Si., a lecture from the Agriculture Extension and Communication Study Program (Prodi PKP) FP UNS, explains the role of millennials in village development.

Village development requires three aspects, which need to be possessed by the young generation, namely, the preparedness to correct, nurture, and transform the current condition to achieve community development. According to her, any effort taken for a community empowerment program must be systematic, programmed, persuasive, and participative. Dr. Sapja states that intervention is crucial to establish an independent community.

“We need an intervention that involves community empowerment, extension, community development, and assistance to establish independence,” Dr. Sapja explains.

At the end of the session, Dr. Sapja shares tips for students to assist village development. The tips are including student capacity building, the establishment of an implementation team, enhancing social sensitivity, event development, building partnership with related stakeholders, and collaboration with the villagers. Humas UNS

Reporter: Zalfaa Azalia Pursita
Editor: Dwi Hastuti
