As quoted from the Women’s Studies Encyclopedia, gender is a cultural concept that differentiates the role, behavior, mentality, and emotional characteristics between men and women that developed in society. Berliana stated that it is the time for the young generation to become a generation that is aware of gender equality. She emphasized that gender equality does not mean making women the same as men.

“To be a generation that is aware of gender equality, (we) could start from ourselves. (Create) division of work that does not base on gender, (equal) parenting for sons and daughters, and provides the same opportunity for men and women,” Berliana stated.

She added that these actions would reduce gender discrimination that is commonly found in limiting education, jobs, sexual violence, and domestic violence.

“Gender discrimination will make someone feel humiliated, embarrassed, and intimidated, feeling guilty, declining motivation, and the onset of psychological symptoms such as depression, anxiety, nervousness, and disturbance in family life,” she explained.

Berliana also explained that the correct psychological approach to handling such a situation is by providing the feeling of safety, connectivity with others and increasing hope, collecting social and emotional support, and the feeling that they could help themselves.

The supporting factors in facing gender discrimination are comprehension of self-potential and drawbacks, not comparing oneself with others, acting assertive but not aggressive or passive, preparing short-term and long-term objectives, preparing life strategy, and focusing on achieving them.

The event opened with a welcoming speech from Prof. Dr. Ir. Ahmad Yunus, M.S., who shared information about cases experienced by adolescents with disabilities and the applicable Laws (regulations), programs related to health issues as well as the lives of adolescents with disabilities, and the expectation of cooperation between the National Population and Family Planning Board (BKKBN) and LPPM UNS.

There were four speakers presented at the event. They are Prof. Dr. Munawir Yusuf, M.Psi.; Prof. dr. Hadi Pratomo, MPH, Dr. PH.; Pdt. Dr. Yerusa Maria Agustini Hadiprijanto; and Puput Susanto, as well as Asep Sopari as the Moderator for the discussion. The first material was presented by Prof. Munawir, the Head of PSD LPPM UNS, with material entitled “Disability Studies and Policies in Indonesia: Diversity and Problems of Adolescents with Disabilities.” Starting his presentation, Dr. Munawir conveyed the rights of persons with disabilities that must be fulfilled. These rights include equality and non-discrimination rights, accessibility rights, the right to life, awareness-raising rights, and the right to be free from exploitation, violence, and harassment. According to him, to form an inclusive climate, these rights must be fulfilled.

The next material was presented by Prof. Hadi, a Professor at the University of Indonesia (UI), entitled “Disability and Issues of Reproductive and Sexual Health.” At the beginning of his material presentation, he explained the definition of disability. “People with disability are anyone who experiences physical, intellectual, mental, and/or sensory limitations for a long time in their interaction with the environment, thus can experience obstacles and difficulties to participate fully and effectively with other citizens on an equal rights basis,” he explained at the event that took place on Friday (21/4/2022).

Further, Prof. Hadi explained that program evaluations needed right now are related to accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities. He also outlined guidelines to promote inclusion for persons with disabilities, including adolescents, planning, action, monitoring, and evaluation.

Dr. Yerusa, as the third speaker, discussed the topic “Disability Psychology.” In her explanation, she said that there were strategic steps in educating reproductive health by prioritizing interaction and dialogue, creating a safe and comfortable learning environment, and providing equal opportunities. Dr. Yerusa also describes the dissemination media available for this education purposes, such as videos, website applications, website-based screening, edugame, and the metaverse.

The last material was delivered by Puput Susanto a youth activist, who explained several points such as holistic interventions for adolescents with disabilities, various types of interventions, and social ecology. He also explained policies that should be implemented, such as anti-discrimination programs for adolescents with disabilities, providing equal opportunities, ensuring the availability of favorable inclusive infrastructure facilities, and fulfilling social welfare. In this webinar, the Science Education Study Program invited ethnoscience experts, Dr. Indah S. Budiarti, the Head of Physics Education Study Program, FKIP Universitas Cenderawasih, as the main speaker. The webinar was also attended by the Head of the UNS Science Education Study Program, Dr. Sarwanto. In his remarks, he said that science education learning using an Ethnoscience-based approach is crucial to be implemented in the classroom. “This is because ethnoscience learning method provides opportunities for teachers to bring science learning in an integrated manner, which is in line with the 2013 curriculum mandate, related to integrated science learning,” he said when delivering a welcome remark.

After the welcome speech, the event was followed by the presentation from Dr. Indah, which was moderated by Dr. Bramastia, a lecturer from the Science Education Study Program UNS. Starting her presentation, Dr. Indah said that there are many cultural potentials that can be embedded in science learning. “When implementing ethnoscience in student learning, we need to pay attention to local wisdom surrounding the students. Learning using an ethnoscience approach can make learning more meaningful because it can be found in the students’ daily lives, thus nurturing a wise environmental attitude,” explained Dr. Indah.

She also gave examples of ethnoscience in the Papua area, such as the Molo tradition, Menokok Sagu, Pesta Bakar Batu, bow-hunting, the Tobati-Enjros Jayapura tribal house, and the sailing time of the Asmat tribe. “The application of ethnoscience must pay attention to the students’ characteristics, learning objectives, learning contents sequence, learning tools, learning strategies, learning resources, and task analysis for students,” she concluded. The Chairman of the committee, Dr. Suryanto, S.E., M.Si., stated that the event concluded public dissemination of the result of academic studies and public acceptance of nuclear power development in Indonesia. The national seminar was opened by the Chairman of the National Research and Innovation Board (BRIN), Dr. Laksana Tri Handoko.

“Hopefully, this national seminar could provide new encouragement for the development of nuclear-based new and renewable energy as a vital support in achieving advanced Indonesian economy in the future,” Dr. Handoko stated.

The opening was followed by a remark from the Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, S.H., M.Hum., who explained that there are three challenges faced by Indonesia in achieving environmentally friendly energy. The first challenge is the method to provide energy using a complex method to achieve energy independence; secondly, how to generate sustainable, environmentally friendly energy while maintaining the commitment to the Paris Agreement. “And the third, how Indonesia come up with a unique energy solution according to its geographical condition considering the available natural and human resources. These challenges need to be solved to make Indonesia on par with other countries and at the forefront of energy management,” Prof. Jamal explained. Prof. Jamal also appreciated the smooth collaboration with PT ThorCon Power Indonesia and hoped that the collaboration could benefit the nation.

The following remark was delivered by the Chief Operating Officer (COO) PT ThorCon Power Indonesia, Bob S. Effendi, who shared that the one-year collaboration has resulted in academic studies that reveal new facts on nuclear energy. He added that the study was highly comprehensive because it also discussed the economic, economic growth, and environmental issues surrounding the topic. The study also proved that nuclear energy is a safe, practical, environmentally friendly energy that provides a solution to replace the fossil energy. Bob S. Effendi also hoped that the collaboration could continue further and the dissemination of nuclear energy potential could eliminate the government’s hesitation in adopting nuclear power. “Because nuclear is a practical and low-cost solution for an energy transition that does not burden the community,” he added.

The webinar successfully attracted a total of 92 participants. In this webinar, the Norwegian Embassy was represented by Eivind Forbord Røvig, Second Secretary of The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia. While Rezza Akbar, Lecturer of the Study Program (Program) Sociology of FISIP UNS, served as the Moderator for the session, while the Vice-Dean for Human Resources, Finance, and Logistics Affairs of FISIP UNS, Dr. Ahmad Zuber, opened the event with a welcoming remark.

In his material presentation, Eivind Forbord Røvig explained Norwegian history as a Viking nation until it transformed into an advanced nation, though it was categorized as small in the context of the area and population. Røvig explained that currently, Norway manages to rely on hydro energy by utilizing its water resources as an energy source. This energy source is more efficient and environmentally friendly, although the Norwegian economy is supported by the discovery of a large number of oil resources in Norwegian water territory. However, the Norwegian government’s green policy stipulates that oil is only produced for sale abroad. Therefore, domestic energy sources are focused on national commitments to use the more environmentally friendly hydro energy.

In addition, Røvig also explained how Norway handled the Covid-19 pandemic. He stated that since the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Norwegian government distributed vaccines to the entire population, then required them to stay at home for a while. This lockdown policy is effective. Proven by the recent policy taken by the Norway government to eliminate the imposing rules that require everyone to wear a mask and do social distancing. The success of Covid-19 control in Norway then made the situation in the country now seems to have recovered as it did before the pandemic.

In concluding his presentation, Røvig mentioned that Indonesia is more populous, wider in area, and more socially heterogeneous, making it more socially and politically complex compared to Norway. However, Røvig is optimistic that as long as democracy is still implemented openly and substantively, Indonesia’s future will be bright with all the potential that can be optimized. Humas UNS

“The purpose of this webinar is to increase public understanding regarding the dangers of female circumcision or Female Genital Mutilation or Cutting (FGM/C). It also aims to reduce the rampant practice of FGM,” said the Student of the International Relations (HI) Study Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) UNS, Audrey Nethania Wibowo, while serving as the Moderator for the event.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Key Facts, FGM refers to any actions such as the cutting and tearing of female genital organs, including actions taken intentionally to change or injure female genital organs without medical indications. Audrey added that female circumcision or FGM culture still persists in Indonesia. Even though FGM is included in dangerous actions that are exclusively aimed at women or girls, ironically, this practice that has a clear physical and psychological impact persists in our country.

“Therefore, this webinar also fosters awareness of FGM practices that can hurt women. Because few Indonesian people consider FGM as a custom to follow. Although some people are aware of the adverse effects of FGM on health, they still do so to women for acceptance in the community. This thought is what must be improved,” Audrey continued.

Meanwhile, this webinar invited speakers from the Indonesia National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) Commissioner, Dr. Retty Ratnawati, M.Sc. Dr. Retty explains about Prevention & Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation (P2GP) or Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C).

Dr. Retty said the P2GP practice is still implemented in Indonesia because it is seen as a hereditary culture and is considered a religious order. “In contrast, the medicalization of P2GP can indirectly cause greater damage due to more invasive surgical procedures performed. The parents’ viewpoint who say that P2GP has benefits for their daughters contradicts the evidence from the medical side. The media side indicated that this practice has a harmful impact on girls’ physical and mental health,” explained Dr. Retty.

The stance taken by the Komnas Perempuan regarding the practice of P2GP or FGM is to encourage the integration of an inclusive and intersectional human rights perspective in reproductive health policies. That is by paying special attention to the policy of Zero Tolerance toward P2GP practices. “Female circumcision, in any form, needs to be abolished because P2GP is a form of sexual violence based on gender against women. That also a symbol of a discriminatory act against women,” said Dr. Retty. Furthermore, Dr. Retty also encourages every Indonesian to understand P2GP impact, to take decisive action to stop discrimination, hoaxes, and myths related to P2GP, and to fight for the right to sexual and reproductive health.

The second speaker was the Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist, Dr. Muhammad Fadli, Sp. OG Dr. Fadli explained the Impact and Implications of Female Circumcision. “The practice of female circumcision or FGM or P2GP has no medical benefits because it will cause severe complications, both acute or chronic. Additionally, this action has also been abandoned in Indonesian Medicine for a long time,” concluded Dr. Fadli. Humas UNS

Dr.techn. Sholihin explained that Surakarta has a flood issue because it is surrounded by ten rivers: Kali Pepe Hulu, Kali Sumber, Sungai Gajah Putih, Kali Premulung, Kali Brojo, Kali Jenes, Sungai Bengawan Solo, Kali Pepe Hilir, Kali Anyar, and Kali Boro. Surakarta is also located in a depression zone that makes it vulnerable to flooding. The Dean added that prevention actions were taken to construct floodgates, open green spaces, and retaining walls, representing Surakarta’s efforts in anticipating flooding and inundation.

“One of the efforts we could take to control flooding and inundation is implementing sustainable and environmentally friendly disaster mitigation, for example, understanding the natural phenomenon, conducting an environmental survey, adapting to the natural phenomenon, involving all stakeholders, carrying out in an integrated manner from upstream to downstream, inviting community participation, building a culture of environmental awareness, and building a culture of disaster response,” Dr.techn. Sholihin stated.

Dr.techn. Sholihin added that if flood and inundation occur in Surakarta, the first step to mitigate the phenomenon is to identify the issues comprehensively. “Then determine who are the stakeholders in flood and inundation mitigation. What technology should be selected? And to continue learning from the existing data. Therefore, flood and inundation could be handled well,” Dr.techn. Sholihin stated.

Flood and inundation issues in Surakarta could be handled collectively under a synergy among all parties, including the government and non-governmental organizations, through a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to avoid conflicts in its implementation. Humas UNS

Prof. Triyanto stated that the discussion regarding IKN is inseparable from various aspects such as historical, legal, political, sociological, and economic aspects. From a historical point of view, moving a capital city had been done before from 1946 to 1949 from Jakarta to Yogyakarta and in 1948 to Bukittinggi. The new capital city in Palangkaraya was also discussed during the Soekarno era, but it evaporated without implementation. President Soeharto also brought up the idea of moving the capital city from Jakarta to Jonggol, which also met no realization. The new capital city was realized in President Jokowi’s era, with a planned new capital city in Kalimantan Timur, named Nusantara.

Prof. Triyanto also discussed the sociological aspect of the plan regarding the future of local people in the region. The Head of Master Program in Pancasila and Civic Education (PPKn) UNS stated that local people are often marginalized during the development of a capital city; take the Betawi people in Jakarta as an example. He emphasized that the local people need special attention due to this issue. “It needs a consideration because we are not just moving the people, but their families, culture, jobs, social environment, and other aspects,” he stated in Ngobrol Bareng IKA FH UNS on Thursday (24/2/2022).

Prof. Triyanto also discussed the transfer of a hundred thousand state civil apparatus (ASN) from Jakarta to Nusantara, which will require special care regarding their social aspects, such as residential area, school or university, and live necessity, and social environment. Everything needs to be considered to prevent declining productivity.

“These (aspects) need to be anticipated to ensure that migrant and local people generate optimum benefits from the new capital city,” he added.

Prof. Zudan Arif Fakrulloh, S.H., M.H., the Chairman of the Alumni Association (IKA) of the Faculty of Law (FH) UNS and Director General (Dirjen) of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil). Prof. Zudan confirmed that the transfer of ASN will be handled gradually. The ministries will operate in two offices in two separate cities, Jakarta and Nusantara. The transfer is estimated to take between 15 to 20 years to complete. Prof. Zudan explained as another speaker in the discussion. Humas UNS

Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, in his remarks, appreciated the international webinar hosted by the Center for Fintech and Banking (PUI-PT Fintech Center) UNS. According to him, the event can encourage Indonesia’s economic recovery and provide new insights on the sustainable economy after the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world from the beginning of 2020. “March this year will mark the second year that the Covid-19 pandemic hit Indonesia. In 2020, we were shocked by the Covid-19 pandemic that spread rapidly and claimed 6 million lives worldwide and 150 thousand lives in Indonesia,” he said.

That number, according to Luhut, is enormous, not to mention when Indonesia had experienced the second wave of Covid-19 due to the spread of the Delta variant from India in the middle of last year. He added that the Government immediately took a number of measures to reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2. One of them is implementing the Community Activity Restriction (PPKM) at different levels in each region. Luhut said that the police managed to control the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in the community and reduce the number of Covid-19 cases that had jumped dramatically. “Indonesia is also taking emergency steps by accelerating the Covid-19 vaccines shot, including accelerating and intensifying the use of the PeduliLindungi application,” he said.

According to the former Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Presidency, those methods can slowly restore the national economy even though it had not been fully recovered. Continuing the remark from Luhut, Prof. Wimboh does not deny that the world economy has slowed down over the past few years. “The IMF expects both developed economies and emerging markets to experience an economic slowdown due to high uncertainties, such as the spread of Covid-19,” he explained.

Meanwhile, he also mentioned normalization policy factors, high inflation in developed economies, a surge in global commodity prices, and geopolitical tensions between Ukraine and Russia fueling the slowdown of the world economy. According to Prof. Wimboh, this statement is a big challenge, especially for Indonesia, which will face many forward-looking agendas and international agreements agendas. For example, the requirement to keep the Earth’s temperature from rising beyond 1.5 degrees was agreed at the COP26 event in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2021, and the agreement to reduce global carbon emissions by 45 percent by 2030.

“For the first time, the COP has agreed to reduce fossil fuels usage gradually, and developed countries are committed to increasing their fund mobilization around USD 100 billion per year in 2021-2025 and achieving the fund’s targets as soon as possible,” added Prof. Wimboh.

Aside from the online remark by Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan and Prof. Wimboh, the International Webinar entitled “Sustainable Finance and Impact Investing” also invited several international class speakers. The webinar on Saturday (19/2/2022) invited three speakers, David Virya Chen, Ph.D., a specially appointed researcher in Immunology Frontier Research Center, Osaka University; Asst. Prof. Miftakhul Huda, Assistant Professor di Nagoya University; and Murni Ramli, M.Si., Ed.D.; Faculty Member of Biology Education UNS. The opening remark was delivered by Prof. Yusli Wardianto, the Educational and Cultural Attache of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) Tokyo, and Prof. Sajidan, the Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, Business, and Information Affairs UNS.

In his opening remark, Chairman of PSJ UNS, Dr. Eng. Kusumaningdyah Nurul Handayani hoped that the webinar could benefit all participants. “We hoped that the partnership agenda prepared with PPI Japan could be implemented in the future,” Dr. Eng. Kusumaningdyah stated.

Prof. Sajidan also appreciated the collaboration and hoped that students in Japan could contribute to the nation’s development, although they are far away from Indonesia. “I am happy with the spirits of PPI Japan hopefully, after you graduate, you can come back to build Indonesia to be in the same level as Japan,” Prof. Sajidan stated. Prof. Yusli Wardianto supported Prof. Sajidan and stated that although they are abroad, it is expected that they will contribute to the nation. “I hoped we could take a synthesis from the speakers,” he stated.

The first speaker, David Virya Chen, Ph.D., discussed Covid-19 and the role of the vaccine. He compared the immune system and kitchen in the sense that the immune system is like kitchen components that are only included when we open their containers. He also emphasized the importance of vaccine distribution before the booster program. The second speaker, Asst. Prof. Miftakhul Huda shared material on an education program in Japan during the pandemic situation. He stated that not all schools in Japan were ready when the government applied Covid-19 emergency. The condition led to non-intensive materials provided by teachers, with some of them only providing their students with pdf or video materials. “Only around 9% uses two-way media like Zoom,” he stated.

The last material from Murni Ramli, M.Si., Ed.D., discussed the readiness and importance of face-to-face learning amid the pandemic in Indonesia. She stated that during the pandemic, the learning activities remain under control under curriculum, actors, or facilitators in the teaching and learning process. The only difference was that the teacher’s portion was reduced, and the parents and online portion increased. “Teachers use diverse online learning platforms from group chat with parents to a complex learning management system,” she explained. She added that according to the Kemdikbudristek survey, only 46% of Indonesian teachers are ready with information technology skills, resulting in technology cluelessness. Some students also don’t have good internet access and appropriate tools to access the internet. Humas UNS
