UNS — Commission I of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta Board of Professor initiated webinar on ‘Mass Media Opinion Column Writing.’ The webinar aims to encourage UNS professors to share their ideas, particularly through writing.

Inviting two speakers, the webinar was held online through the Zoom Cloud Meeting application and live-streamed on the UNS YouTube channel on Monday (13/12/2021). Two invited speakers are Prof. Dr. Agus Kristiyanto as UNS Columnist and Vice-Dean at the School of Postgraduate Studies and Iwan Kurniawan from Tempo Institute.

The webinar on opinion column writing was officially opened by the Rector of UNS, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho. In his opening remark, the Rector appreciated the webinar because opinion column writing in mass media has great benefits for participants who like to write to the media. Prof. Jamal also thinks that UNS faculty members have a large opportunity to share their ideas through writing, considering the diverse disciplines in UNS that could translate into various topics of discussion. Through their writing, UNS faculty members could share their ideas and contribute to solving the nations’ problems.

“I truly hope that the members of the Board of Professors and all participants could find solutions for local, national, and even international level,” Prof. Jamal added.

Widely accessible and available for the public, writing in mass media could improve people’s awareness of the issues in Indonesia. “Writing also elevates us, elevate our delf identity,” Prof. Jamal added.

Attending the same occasion, the Chairman of the UNS Board of Professor, Prof. Suranto Tjiptowibisono, agreed to Prof. Jamal. Although, writing in media is not an easy task that requires experience and patience. Prof. Suranto emphasized that journal writing tends to be formal and difficult to understand for common people, while the information contained in such writing is accessible for everyone.

“Our highly formal writing in the form of the journal needs to be modified and shared to people who are not in that particular field of study but also understand the topic,” Prof. Suranto stated.

Therefore, Prof. Suranto hoped that through this webinar, UNS Board of Professors and UNS faculty members could share their ideas in mass media and facilitate accessibility towards such discussion for people. The Chairman of the UNS Board of Professor also added that currently, 12 articles from the UNS Board of Professor are under publishing process by Cambridge Publishing Company. Humas UNS

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta student won another achievement at the national level. Tegar Ramadani, a new student in Historical Science Program Faculty of Cultural Studies (FIB) UNS, won two competitions: FRIC 2021 BEM FMIPA Universitas Negeri Malang and Code K-Risma 2021 held by Universitas Brawijaya. Both are essay writing competitions.

Tegar won 2nd place in the online FRIC 2021 BEM FMIPA Universitas Negeri Malang with an essay titled ‘Fenma: Utilizing Tobacco Steams and Cacao Skin Waste in Bioethanol Production.’ The essay was inspired by his interest in renewable energy issues at the global level, which recently captured people’s attention after the glooming wary over the over-usage of fossil fuels and their adverse impact on the environment. Therefore, Tegar wanted to contribute by providing ideas on renewable energies to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“The oil reserves depleted day by day, so I prefer to take renewable energy theme. This theme is also a global issue. The use of oil in Indonesia is also quite concerning, especially in the environmental aspect and energy consumption that see a great inequality,” he explained to uns.ac.id team on Wednesday (8/12/2021).

Before winning the competition, Tegar competed with participants from other universities, such as Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Universitas Jember (Unej), Universitas Udayana, and Universitas Diponegoro (Undip). In total, 20 teams participated in the competition, with only five teams going to the final round.

In Code K-Risma 2021, Tegar won his 2nd position with an essay discussing renewable energy. However, his essay in this competition focuses on biogas reactor for fish wastes in the coastal regions as a solution for future renewable energy. In Code K-Risma 2021, Tegar fought around 60-70 teams from various universities such as Universitas Pertamina, Universitas Riau, Universitas Ahmad Dahlan, ITS, and Undip.

To the uns.ac.id team, Tegar stated that he was inspired by his high school tutor. He modified the idea and added concepts and recent data. In Code K-Risma 2021, he was also required to present his writing through the Zoom Cloud Meeting. Twelve finalists presented their ideas and fought for the best three won by Universitas Airlangga (Unair), UNS, and Universitas Negeri Semarang (Unnes).

Tegar admitted that he does not expect to win both competitions consecutively. “I did not have an experience in competing at the university level. Even I felt insecure because my competitors were ‘wow’ such as from Universitas Indonesia (UI), Unair, Universitas Brawijaya (UB), and other universities,” he added.

Tegar is also delighted that even though he is studying humanities study, he could participate in the competition in a different discipline. In the future, he wants to collaborate with students from other programs to represent UNS in the Pimnas and bring pride to the campus at national and international levels. Humas UNS

UNS — The Student Executive Board (BEM) Faculty of Engineering (FT) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a writing webinar online. Two students were invited as speakers in the webinar. The first speaker, Fatata A’izaza, is a Mathematics Education Program student who won an international essay writing competition. The second speaker is Atina Rahmawati, an excellent student from FKIP UNS.

In the webinar on Full Discussion on Scientific Writing to Achieve Leading Engineering Faculty, Fatata delivered material on idea generation in writing. She mentioned that the first step to generating ideas is brainstorming or a thought process to solve the existing problems. Brainstorming could improve problem-solving skills from various points of view.

“The first step of brainstorming is comprehensive reading, understanding what we read. It could be from a journal, article, books, and other sources. From this step, we can define the problem and gain references. Then accommodate some topics; the larger the topics and points of view, the better. Then discussion, how we discuss the problem with applicable solutions,” she explained. The last step that Fatata described is concluding evaluation. She suggested that writers have a separate book to write down ideas that appear. Ideas could come from wherever and could be executed whenever.

The following step is problem identification. In this step, Fatata suggested that writers identify problems from various points of view and limit what will be discussed and what is not relevant. “After that, find supports, generate a solution, build a framework, and consulting to expert, and lastly, execution,” she concluded in the webinar held on Saturday (17/7/2021).

The second material from Atina Rahmawati discussed how to write scientific articles and tips and tricks. Atina explained that scientific writing must be logical, systematic, objective, and ethical or includes a scientific attitude. A scientific paper consists of the title, abstract, introduction, literature review, methodology, discussion, conclusion, reference, and appendix.

She shared tips to choose a title that a title should be able to describe the overall content of an article. A good title is also descriptive and innovative, and the use of shortened forms adds attractiveness to a title. On writing the abstract, writers should summarize the content of their article and should avoid discussing lengthy background in the abstract due to characters limitations.

“A good writing method starts with visualization and detailed explanation, great branding, and coherence. The flow moves from general to specific discussion; use data that support your arguments and belief that your idea is an appropriate solution. Other vital components are writing novelty, implementing PUEBI, creating graphs or tables to facilitate reader comprehension, and paraphrasing,” she concluded. Humas UNS

UNS — A student of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Program Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) brought a proud name for Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta. Aji Santoso won the 1st prize in Short Story Writing Competition BSO Madura Pintar held by FKIP Universitas Trunojoyo Madura.

This competition was held to commemorate Madura Pintar Anniversary in 2021. Under the theme of “Indonesian Inspirational Volunteers”, the competition has two sub-themes, volunteers in community services and volunteers during the pandemic. Aji Santoso was selected to volunteer in the community service sub-theme and wrote a story titled ‘Relawan Sarung’ (Saroong Volunteer). His short story tells the journey of a volunteer during the eruption of Mount Merapi in Sleman, Yogyakarta, who asked for his mother’s blessing. His mother gave him a sarong which later saved him from the cruel eruption.

“The story is based on a true story, which focuses on parent’s blessings that could save someone from danger. But I modified the story,” Aji told uns.ac.id team (20/5/2021).

The fan of Joko Pinurbo said that he started to like writing since entering the university around 2019. Besides short stories, Aji also writes poetry and opinion in his free time. From his hobby, Aji won over 104 participants in the competition. Although he won the competition, he said that he would continue learning and hone his writing skill, deciding the theme and selecting diction. He also enriches his literacy knowledge by reading various short stories. Aji hopes that he could publish a collection of his short stories in a book through a major publisher in the future. Humas UNS
