UNS — The Center for Mandarin Study (PBM) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held the Chinese New Year Celebration 2022 in Hartono Mall on Tuesday (1/2/2022). The celebration also featured Barongsai performance, Chinese cultural performance, and announcement of all competitions held in the previous days.

The Chinese New Year 2022 celebration was attended by Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, Business, and Information Affairs UNS, Prof. Sajidan; the Dean of Faculty of Cultural Studies (FIB) UNS, Prof. Warto; and the Chairwoman of PBM UNS, Stephanie Phanata, B.Ed., M.TCSOL.

Prof. Sajidan stated that the Chinese New Year celebration started on the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar and ended with Cap Go Meh on the 15th day (in the full moon).

“In China, regional customs and traditions related to Chinese New Year celebrations and lantern festivals are very diverse. However, all (customs) are classified into general activities such as dinner on New Year’s Eve and firework lighting,” Prof. Sajidan explained.

He added that one of PBM UNS’ missions is to promote Chinese culture through various competitions, such as Chinese calligraphy writing contests, Sinyo-Nonik photogenic competition, talk show, picking up red packets on the cherry tree, Chinese art performance, and Baronsai performance.

“Hopefully, through the Chinese New Year event ‘Relying on the Spirit of Diversity in Indonesian Cultural Diversity,’ we could welcome the Water Tiger year 2022 with full of happiness,” Prof. Sajidan added.

Stephanie Phanata, B.Ed., M.TCSOL., also hoped that the year brings happiness for everyone.
