UNS – The Council of Professors (DP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held the 3rd edition of the Forum of Ideas with the theme of Global Warming “Anticipate Impacts and Mitigation Efforts”. The activity was held offline in Meeting Room IV, dr. Prakosa UNS, online via Zoom Meeting, and broadcast live via YouTube Universitas Sebelas Maret. The holding of this event is also in commemoration of World Environment Day.

The Rector of UNS, represented by the Interim Vice Rector for Research and Innovation, Prof. Dr. Kuncoro Diharjo, S.T., M.T., expressed his appreciation for holding this initiative. Hopefully, the results of the forum of ideas can provide input on the policies that have been formed.

“The theme raised is global warming, which is very good. Moreover now there is a lot of talk about the issue of global warming. We in the research community also continue to encourage the development of various research projects related to the mitigation or anticipation of global warming. Furthermore, we hope that after this event, researchers at UNS will be inspired to strengthen various research projects on global warming. Apart from that, I hope that this event can inspire us all to be more concerned about the issue of global warming, in particular,” Prof. Kuncoro said.

On this occasion, the Head of DP UNS, Prof. Drs. Suranto Tjiptowibisono, M.Sc., Ph.D. as well as Professor of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) UNS expressed his gratitude for organizing this event.

“Through this event, it is a concrete manifestation of UNS which is always concerned about environmental issues. This forum of ideas is also our joint effort to always respond to an event that is currently being hotly discussed. It is hoped that this forum for ideas which has entered its 3rd edition can continue and the topics that will be discussed later can always be adjusted to the things that are currently being discussed,” Prof. Suranto continued.

Prof. Suranto added that one thing that needs to be encouraged is the creation of environmentally friendly plastics. It is also how to give a good example to suppress global warming which starts with a small concrete action.

Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Supriyadi, M.S. as Professor of the Faculty of Agriculture (FP) UNS said that the effects of global warming also have an impact on the explosion of certain insect pest populations or the extinction of certain insect pests. “As for things that can be done to mitigate it, it can be integrated pest management,” Prof. Supriyadi added.

Then the third speaker, Prof. Prabang Setyono, S.Si., M.Sc. as Professor of FMIPA UNS said that another thing that can be done is waste management.

“Resolving plastic waste can be done with S, namely finding a solution. A is active. M is reducing. P is reuse. A is the transformation into something that has a sale value. And H, namely generating added value from this waste. In detail, it is how we can manage waste creatively and innovatively,” Prof. Prabang said.

Furthermore, the last resource person was, Prof. Dr. Hartiwiningsih, S.H., M.Hum., as Professor of the Faculty of Law (FH) UNS. She said that we must be able to build a culture of awareness of the environment. Because of being aware of the environment we can help overcome global warming.

“For example, the state and universities (PT) are working together to socialize the importance of preserving the environment. In this way, we can help solve environmental problems and PT can also be a good example for society,” Prof. Hartiwiningsih concluded. Humas UNS
