UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta hosted “the 2nd Asia Pacific on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (2nd APIEOM)” international conference that facilitates academics, researchers, and industrial practitioners to exchange knowledge on the changing and dynamics of industrial engineering and operation management issues. The international conference was held fully online for four days from Monday-Thursday (13-16/9/2021).
“This event involved 15 keynote speakers and more than 700 presenters from 35 countries,” Wahyudi Sutopo, the Chairman of the committee, stated.
UNS was selected by the IEOM Society as the host and collaborating with local partners including Unversitas Diponegoro (Undip), Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Kalijaga (Uinsuka), Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Yogyakarta (UPNVY); Universitas Telkom, Universitas Tarumanagara (Untar), and Collaborative Institute for Higher Education in Industrial Engineering (BKSTI).
The first day of the conference on Monday (13/9/2021) was opened with 12 student competitions: undergraduate student paper competition sponsored by Siemens; graduate student paper competition sponsored by Eaton corporation; undergraduate research; senior design project; doctoral dissertation; master thesis; human factors and ergonomics; lean six sigma competition sponsored by tooling tech group; simulation; supply chain and logistics; covid-19; and poster competition.
On the second day, Tuesday (14/9/2021), the conference was opened by the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation Affairs UNS, Prof. Dr. Kuncoro Diharjo, S.T., M.T., who appreciated the Industrial Engineering Program of Faculty of Engineering (FT) UNS for joining IEOM Society and actively participating as the host of second APIEOM conference. Prof. Kuncoro also mentioned that the conference supports UNS efforts to achieve World Class University. “And to build a stronger relationship between universities and industries globally,” he added.
Three speakers delivered their research on the first session of the second day. Dr. Jessika E. Trancik from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology USA discussed the “Data-informed models to accelerate clean energy innovation: an example from transportation systems,” followed by Dr. Jay Lee from Foxconn Technology Group Taiwan, who discussed the “Industrial AI and Resilient Manufacturing Systems – Technologies, Challenge, and Research Issues”. The third speaker, Prof. George Q. Huang from The University of Hong Kong, discussed “Industry 4.0- Smart Manufacturing: From Zero Inventory to Zero Warehouse Manufacturing” topic.
In the second session, Dr. Robert de Souza, The Executive Director of the Logistics Institute – Asia Pacific (TLIAP) Singapore, and Harry Kasuma (Kiwi) Aliwarga as the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Owner, UMG Myanmar led the discussion with participants. The rest keynote speakers delivered their presentations on the 3rd and 4th days.
IEOM Society also gave great attention to global engineering education by holding the “25th IEOM Global Engineering Education Forum” that aims to reduce disparity in global engineering graduates. FT UNS, in collaboration with FT UNDIP and the Centre of Engineering Education (CEE) Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) used this opportunity to initiate the “Indonesian Engineering Education Conference (IEEC)”.
The Dean of FT UNS, Dr. Techn. Ir. Sholiqin As’ad, M.T., in his opening remark, shared the importance of strengthening the global engineering education, especially for Indonesia who is lacking in the number of engineers.
“This forum could become a means to exchange thoughts, knowledge, and experience in learning issues and engineering education problems, as well as international accreditation,” Dr. Sholiqin stated.
The international conference was concluded on Thursday (16/9/2021) with IEOM Society Awards to people who have contributed to the development of industrial engineering and operations management as well as winners of student competitions. Humas UNS
