UNS – The Master of Public Administration (MAP) Program at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a Scientific Publication Writing Training on Wednesday (March 27, 2024). Dr. Bevaola Kusumasari, M.Si., a lecturer in Public Administration at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Yogyakarta, was the speaker for this event. The training took place in the Mangkunegara Room at UNS Inn.

The event was opened by Dra. Prahastiwi Utari, M.Si., Ph.D., as the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Research, and Student Affairs at FISIP UNS. The training was conducted to enhance the skills of lecturers and students. Additionally, the graduation requirement for MAP students is to publish in a Sinta-2 accredited journal or international proceedings indexed by Scopus. Second-semester students face the challenge of finding new research topics for their theses and publications.

The scientific publication writing training was attended by the Dean of FISIP UNS, Prof. Dr. Ismi Dwi Astuti Nurhaeni, M.Si.; the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Research, and Student Affairs at FISIP UNS, Dra. Prahastiwi Utari, M.Si., Ph.D.; the Vice Dean for Planning, Business Cooperation, and Information at FISIP UNS, Dr. Didik Gunawan Suharto, S.Sos., M.Si.; lecturers from FISIP UNS, and MAP Master’s students from FISIP UNS.

Dr. Bevaola Kusumasari, M.Si., delivered a presentation on the process of scientific publication. There are several stages that need to be passed. The process from submitting to publishing an article goes through desk review for about one month, review for about two months, revision for about two months, and layouting for about one month.

“The fastest scientific publication process takes 6 months. When submitting an article, pay attention to the scope of the journal to ensure it matches the content,” Dr. Bevaola explained.

Dr. Bevaola also shared tips on selecting journals for publication. Publication journals can be selected based on readings in the literature review conducted. Other criteria include journal ranking, journal indexing, research topics, time, and publishing costs.

Additionally, she discussed how to create attention-grabbing titles. A research title should clearly reflect the main theme and be as specific as possible, considering the length limitations.

“Determining a title can be done by mixing and matching selected main articles,” Dr. Bevaola continued.

Following the presentation, the event continued with a question–answer session with attending MAP lecturers and students. Discussions arose during this session, with participants asking practical questions and seeking publication experience from the speaker.

The event was concluded by Prof. Dr. Ismi Dwi Astuti Nurhaeni, M.Si., who emphasized that writing is a never-ending process. Everyone has limited time to gather articles, and it is essential to continue this process to receive feedback.

“We can improve our writing for the future. Choose articles with targets higher than what you have selected,” Prof. Ismi advised. Humas UNS
