UNS— The Professors’ Council of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta is committed to encouraging UNS lecturers to achieve professorships promptly. This was conveyed by the Chairman of the UNS Professors’ Council, Prof. Drs. Suranto Tjiptowibisono, M.Sc., Ph.D., during the opening of the Focused Group Discussion on “Strategies for Professorship Proposal” at UNS Inn on Wednesday (3/7/2024).

“We always urge our colleagues at UNS to reach the highest academic functional position for lecturers, which is professorship. A professor is the highest academic or functional position for a lecturer. We urge those who meet the requirements not to delay,” Prof. Suranto explained.

As a commitment, the UNS Professors’ Council gathers Doctors and Associate Professors who meet the requirements for professorship applications. This initiative aims to increase the number of lecturers holding the highest academic functional position. Compared to other State Legal Entity Universities (PTNBH) like Universitas Indonesia and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), UNS still has fewer professors.

“Their number of professors exceeds 200, while we are still below 200. We continue to push for this because it is an academic and institutional need for UNS. One of the indicators of a well-developed university is the number of its professors. The more professors there are, the more knowledge advances. Thus, our commitment at the Professors’ Council is to encourage our colleagues not to delay. It is not only about personal achievement but also an institutional need, specifically for the faculties, and from the faculties to the study programs,” he added.

The UNS Professors’ Council is committed to balancing the number of professors with other PTNBHs in the next five to ten years. “Other PTNBHs can add around 100 professors annually. We cannot be complacent; our target this year is to add 100 new professors. Currently, 27 UNS lecturers are already in the process in Jakarta. Just last month, we sent the requirements for 37 UNS lecturers to achieve the highest academic position, which is Professorship. We hope to have even more in the next wave,” Prof. Suranto said.

The Professors’ Council is ready to assist lecturers who wish to discuss or consult about the requirements needed to achieve this highest functional academic position. “We are happy to help. We provide support via WhatsApp or direct consultations. I hope the number of professors at UNS will continue to grow and match other PTNBHs, supporting research, teaching, and publication activities. I also remind everyone that missing one or two requirements is common. Do not be discouraged, as the path to professorship is not always smooth,” he added.

In the Focused Group Discussion on “Strategies for Professorship Proposal” at UNS, the Professors’ Council invited lecturers already in the process of applying for professorships. After the opening speech by Prof. Drs. Suranto Tjiptowibisono, M.Sc., Ph.D., the event continued with presentations by Professor of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) UNS, Prof. Doddy Setiawan, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., Ak., and Professors from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) UNS, Prof. Dr. Fitria Rahmawati, S.Si., M.Sc., and Prof. Dr. Eng. Hendri Widiyandari, S.Si., M.Sc., with Prof. Dr. rer.nat. Witri Wahyu Lestari, S.Si., M.Sc., as the moderator.
