UNS — Two Midwifery Program students, Faculty of Medical Science (FK) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, achieved a proud accomplishment. These students are Safirah Rahmasari Azzahra and Straerla Atby Milinisa, who won the 1st prize in the Health Competition of Midwifery Generation (HCG) 2021 announced on Saturday (24/7/2021).

Safirah and Erla competed in one team and submitted an essay on “Optimizing Midwife’s Role in Achieving SDGs amid the Pandemic”. Their essay is a futuristic idea that elaborated midwives’ creativity in fulfilling their role in achieving SDGs amid the pandemic. The essay titled “Resiliasi (Remaja Indonesia Peduli Kesehatan Reproduksi – Indonesian Youth’s care for Reproductive Health): Android-based Application to Education the Youth on the Importance of Reproductive System Health” won over other participants works.

“In essay competition, there were seven participants; we are the only one from UNS. (Participants) from other universities are from Universitas Negeri Malang, Poltekkes Surabaya, and other universities,” Erla said.

Safirah and Erla consider that the youth’s knowledge of the reproductive system health needs to be improved and that youth understanding of the reproductive system health in Indonesia tends to be low. They explained that early education could prevent reproductive-related cases, such as extramarital pregnancy and HIV AIDS infection in the young generation. Thus, they decided that media to educate the youth on reproductive health is vital to be developed to provide reliable information and protect the youth from fake information.

“We combine the creative midwife and achieve SDGs during the pandemic,” Safirah said.

The tendency of the young to acquire information from many sources encourages the girls to develop attractive and exciting media for their “resiliasi” app. They equip their app with attractive visualization and educative features. The features are unique and adjusted for male and female user’s needs.

“Hopefully, this application could be realized one day with the help from related parties,” Safirah stated.

HCG 2021 is a competition held by Diploma (D-3) Program in Sutomo Midwifery student association in Politeknik Kesehatan (Poltekkes) Kementerian Kesehatan (Kemenkes) Surabaya. The competition has four categories with a theme of “Become a creative Midwife in the Millenial Era 2021”. Humas UNS
