UNS – After the students from Architecture Study Program from the Faculty of Engineering (FT), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta become the runner-up for the AFAIR (Architecture UI Fair) 2020, now the student from the Urban and Regional Planning (PWK) Study Program of FT UNS, Difa Ayu Balqist, who presented an achievement for UNS with their team in Urban Motion Vol 3.0 ‘Resilience in Disruption Era’ in Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB).

Difa, who is incorporated in a team with Aretha Dewi Amandanisa from PWK, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Yogyakarta, Nurhadiana from Civic Education Study Program in Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), Najmuddin Haikal Fikri from Geology Engineering Study Program, Universitas Padjajaran (UNPAD), and Sinta Aulia from PWK Universitas Syiah Kuala (Unsyiah), had successfully won the ‘best presentation’ category in the competition.

During the competition, which was held on January 17-18, 2020, in School of Architecture, Planning, and Policy Development (SAPPK) ITB, Difa needs to submit their essay entitled ‘Innovation on the Policy of Low Carbon City Concept: a Case Study in Surakarta, Sukoharjo, and Karanganyar’ as their original idea, which aims to establish a city with great ‘resilience’.

“Coincidentally, for the competition, individually we can submit the essay on a sub-topic. It happened that I chose ecological control. From all participants 60 best essays are selected to join the motion summit in ITB,” Difa said on Friday (24/01/2020).

Further, Difa mentioned that in Urban Motion 3.0, she and her teammates collaborate to find the root of the problem and providing a solution on the topic.

“We were asked to solve the problem given. This problem is related to the sub-topic chosen namely ecological control with a grand topic of ‘Carbon Emission Reduction’. We were requested to establish a diagram of the problem (Core Problem, Primary Issue, and Secondary Issue), after we find the root of the problem,” explain Difa.

After analyzing the root of the problem, the team was directed to establish an objective diagram that covers the solutions of the existing problem through coaching within a workshop and panel discussion delivered by a coach (influencer/speaker) in line with the field or subject.

After the coaching stage, her team presented the diagram of the problem in front of the coach and other participants to determine the winner of the competition.

When asked about the essay that had successfully led them to get into the top 60, she said that they wrote a concept of a resilient city. The objective was for the city to be resilient against the environmental changes.

“As for the background of this topic, currently we are entering a disruption era, an era when a fundamental change can happen anytime, thus it has a significant impact on all aspects in the community’s order. Therefore, a city is expected to be a resilient city; a city that resilient to continuous changes due to technological progress and development,” Difa added.

For the student of PWK FT UNS, the Low Carbon City concept needs to be supported with the reduction of carbon emission from the public transportation, green building concept, reduction of energy usage, the addition of green open space, and development of sustainable energy.

However, for the implementation Difa found several problems. For instance, Difa said that there was a conversion of land function (open space) into buildings, while a city/regency needs to have at least 30% open space.

Accordingly, the team suggested an incentive and disincentive policy, as a means to establish the obligations in applying the concept of green building.

“Based on the essay, the title leads to policy, automatically it relates to incentive and disincentive policy, or the policy from the government will be better. This will help the implementation. For instance, the implementation of lower tax for the corporation that uses green industry and uses sustainable energy in their production,” she concluded. Humas UNS/Yefta
