UNS, Ponorogo – A group of student community service (KKN) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a daycare and skill training for disability especially for deaf, mute, and intellectual disability in Krebet village, Jambon Subdistrict, Ponorogo District on Sunday (9/2/2020). The event was a collaboration between UNS students and a social organization; Rumah Kasih Sayang.
The leader of KKN UNS Ponorogo, Suhail Ilmi Muhandis stated that there were several events held, among others morning exercise and skill training. There are various types of skill training: making batik, making doormats from patchwork, making macramé bags, and making woven bamboo.
To follow up on the event, on Tuesday (11/2/2020) KKN UNS held socialization on mental health with dr.Onza Pramudyta Hexandira as the speaker. dr.Onza Pramudyta Hexandira is a physician in the Community Health Care Center (Puskesmas) Jambon.
“The socialization started with a screening of the motivational video. The session is ended with a discussion and question and answer between participants and the speaker. KKN Team in Ponorogo considers that disability is not the end of everything,” Suhail stated when contacted by uns.ac.id, Thursday (13/2/2020).
Socialization is expected to improve people’s awareness that each and every person has their own strength and potential even if they have special needs. The event is not limited to the disabled participants, the parents, guardian, and caregiver who are cadre and volunteer of Rumah Kasih Sayang, also attended the event. The event is expected to motivate and answer questions from people on how to take care of and optimizing the potentials of people with disabilities.
“We hope that family with disable members will be more aware of their potential, to develop their potential, and more passion and believe that every person has his/her strength,” stated Suhail. Humas UNS/Zalfaa
