UNS – Three students of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta took first place in the National Debate Competition in a series event of “Vocational Airlangga Talkshow, Debate, and Essay Competition (VOTDEC) 2019” in Universitas Airlangga (Unair) Surabaya, Friday-Sunday (09/20-22/2019). The achievement was triumphed by Ahmad Haidir from Communication Science Department, Aida Nurul from Law Science Department, and Muhijatul Asfarah from State Administration Science Department.

The competition conducted by the Student Executive Board (BEM) of Vocational Faculty of Unair, brought a theme “Students’ Movements in the Industrial Revolution Era 4.0”. That was what made those students were interested in competing.

“There is a special attentiveness while our background as students faces the role and movement of the students in the industrial revolution era 4.0. It is captivating because it is a great challenge and opportunity. And we must be ready to deal with it,” explained Ahmad Haidir, one of the team members.

He frankly spoke that their team did not have specific strategies for winning. They just discussed a lot of current issues and read various references before the departure day in the midst of each member’s activity.

“Read a lot of references about various things, such as law, social politic, economic, and issues related to industrial revolution 4.0,” he added.

The 2019 VOTDEC Debate Competition used the preliminary round system. A total of 16 teams from private and public universities competed three times. The top 8 teams with the most Victory Point (VP) qualified to compete in the next round.

“The frequently winning teams would automatically pass this round. The top 8 teams then compete with the knock-out system. Just do or die. Win or go home,” said Haidir.

Hereafter, he planned to participate in similar competitions with various considerations, such as the venue, organizer, and the rules. He further stated, reflecting on the debate, there was a list of things that he and his team needed to improve.

“We have to be more accurate in analyzing the motions, and of course elevating the understanding and knowledge,” he concluded, Tuesday (10/08/2019). Humas UNS/Kaffa/Try
