UNS — An amazing achievement was again made by students of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta. This time, a student from the Communication Science Study Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) UNS, Sabila Soraya Dewi, managed to win 2nd place in the Kusala Journalism Feature News Competition 2022. The Kusala Journalism Competition 2022 was organized by LPM Dinamika, UIN Sumatra Utara, under 2 (two) competition categories, namely a news feature with the theme of Dynamics of Women’s Struggle in Dealing with Sexual Violence and a photography competition with the theme of Human Interest.
When interviewed by uns.ac.id on Wednesday (18/5/2022), the student who known as Sabila, admitted to finding the competition from the Student Activity Unit she participated in, the LPM Kentingan. At that time, there was an offer to choose delegation as participants in the Kusala Journalism Competition 2022. “The primary reason as to why I am confident to take part in this competition is because I am very attentive to gender issues, especially sexual violence. Bringing these motivations as my provision, I finally decided to register,” Sabila said.
Participating in the competition, Sabila said that she enjoyed writing feature news. Especially in the interview process, which greatly opened her knowledge of the difficulty of getting justice for sexual violence victims. However, Sabila still finds difficulty in the brainstorming process.
“Because sexual violence in the educational environment has broad coverage and can be discussed from various aspects, initially I was confused about how I would keep my writing as a news feature and not transformed into an opinion because I think the structure and focus of the writing are very important. Other difficulties exist in processing data into writing. I find this subject very sensitive, so I am very careful in sorting out which data can be included in writing and which are not,” she explained.
From the difficulties she experienced, Sabila felt very happy that her feature news writings could be appreciated and even succeeded in winning 2nd place. The victory becomes a motivation for Sabila to write a more useful article for readers in the future, especially in raising awareness about gender issues and sexual violence.
“I think writing is inspiring. Once I read a piece, whether it’s a scientific article, news, opinion, or fiction, I’m always inspired to change my perspective, be more creative, and embrace new perspectives. When I write, I always write in the hope that people who read can be inspired and learn something from my writing,” she concluded. Humas UNS
