UNS – As a shape of caring for the people in Riau and Palangkaraya who are polluted by wildfire smoke, lecturers from Medicine Faculty of Universitas Sebelas Maret (FK UNS) Surakarta invented a portable air filter named Surgeons of UNS (SUNS) Portable Air Filter.
The Dean of FK UNS, Dr. Reviono, stated that FK UNS would send a team to the two locations, Riau and Palangkaraya. The team would be led by a lecture of UNS and a doctor of dr. Moewardi Hospital Surakarta, dr. Darmawan Ismail Sp. BTKV. All the time, the people in Riau and Palangkaraya who got polluted by the wildfire smoke wore mask. However, the mask does not maximally protect their respiratory system.
“Thus, we invented a portable air filter whose function is better than the regular mask which is usually used by the people who got polluted by the wildfire smoke. On Thursday (9/19/2019) around 15 people from FK UNS will be sent to Riau, after that to Palangkaraya,” Dr. Reviono explained on the press conference at FK UNS on Wednesday (9/18/2019).
Besides, dr. Darmawan Ismail Sp. BTKV mentioned that the SUNS Portable Air Filter has basically invented in 2015 and tested several times. “We have tested and the result is better than using a regular mask. It means that using this tool, we can inspire clearer air,” Darmawan mentioned.
In Riau, the UNS team will cooperate with FK Universitas Riau. The UNS team will only bring several SUNS Portable Air Filters. “The team will conduct a training there (Riau and Palangkaraya) to educate the people to make the tool autonomously. The steps are easy and the ingredients are convenient. The cost is cheap only about Rp25.000,” Darmawan added.
The ingredients of the SUNS Portable Air Filter are cross-stitch fabric, thin fabric, Velcro, rope, elastic rope, aquarium filter, aquarium hose, plastic ball, sponge, and gloves. Besides, the tools are plaster, marker pen, scissors, cutter, ruler, and glue gun.
The mechanism of the SUNS Portable Air Filter is the air enters the humidifier box through the front filter which is moisturized by the water and detergent which has function as a filter, aromatherapy, carbon binding. Then the clearer air is breathed through the hose and the nether valve of the mask. Next, the bad air discarded through the above valve of the mask and discharge from the SUNS.
“We designed like a bag, some are like a backpack and side bag, with hose to the nose. Moreover, there is a special design having two hoses for mother and the baby. It is practice to carry everywhere. It is suitable for the firefighter either because the design is like a backpack,” Darmawan explained.
