UNS — Vice-Rector for Academic and Student Affairs Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Prof. Ahmad Yunus reminded Eid prayer participants to forgive one another in his Eid Fitr prayer khutbah 1442 Hijriah Thursday (13//5/2021) on dr. Prakosa Building yard UNS.
“We want to clear the mistakes we made during the year. To go back into purity,” Prof. Yunus added. “people need to went through the cleansing process.”
The cleansing process is related to the merciful and forgiveness month, Ramadan, which prevents people from falling into impurity. Eid Fitr in Indonesia is closely related to people going back to their hometown and spending time with families to ask for forgiveness and grant forgiveness. This practice correlated with the concept of Allah and people’s rights. Sin or human mistake toward Allah will incite Allah’s rights to demand redemption from the human. “Fasting during Ramadan is our efforts to seek forgiveness from Allah,” he added. “Human life starts from Allah giving soul to us in the realm of purity. Then we get in touch with the material life which makes people impure.”
No human is immune from mistake to another person, and Allah will not forgive this mistake unless human asks for forgiveness from others. Forgiving is a tricky business as not everybody could forgive other’s mistakes. Moreover, if the mistake was significant and a simple sorry could not amend for it. Qur’an teaches about resentment in surah Al-Hijr 45-50 and surah Al-A’raf 43, which both contain similar meanings. The sign of resentment is an unwillingness to forgive others and is not a mark of faith toward Allah as Allah is full of mercy and forgiveness.
“Allah mentioned that people with faith are those who forgive amid their anger. Thus, forgiving has another moral level and quality (in Islam). Forgiving others mean saving them from their mistakes and saving ourselves from anger,” Prof. Yunus explained.
Before concluding his speech, Prof. Yunus reminded the participants to implement Prophet Muhammad’s message that a dispute should not exceed three days. Prof. Yunus also hoped that this year Eid would bring applicable wisdom and peace for people. “Wherever and whenever we are,” he concluded. Humas UNS
