UNS – The Green Campus Team of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta and the Center for Environmental Research (PPLH) Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) UNS cleaned up trash and provided alum for colloidal pollutant deposition in UNS Lake, Wednesday (31/5/ 2023). That was the initial stage of the purification process of UNS Lake with eco-enzymes. Eco-enzyme distribution will be carried out on Monday (5/6/2023) which coincides with World Environment Day 2023.

This agenda involved several parties such as PPLH UNS, S-1 Environmental Science Study Program UNS, S-2 Environmental Science UNS, S-3 Environmental Science UNS, nine Activity Units (UKM) of Nature Enthusiast Students (Mapala) UNS, as well as environmentalists.

The Chairman of the Commemoration Committee for World Environment Day 2023 at UNS, Prof. Dr. Drs. Pranoto, M.Sc., said that a precipitation process was needed by adding alum to UNS Lake before pouring the eco-enzyme liquid. A total of 200 kg of alum was sprinkled throughout the UNS Lake area.

â€œWe are trying (to make) our environment cleaner. This alum will later precipitate pollutant colloids in UNS Lake,” Prof. Pranoto said.

Together with several Mapala students, Prof. Pranoto immediately went down to clean the lake and sow alum using a rubber boat. They navigated every corner to make sure UNS Lake was clean before pouring the eco-enzyme liquid.

The Head of the Council of Professors (DP) UNS, Prof. Drs. Suranto Tjiptowibisono, M.Sc.Ph.D., who also opened the event, said that this activity was an attempt by UNS to become a pilot campus that is clean and green. UNS seeks to rely on the wealth of existing waters for shared pride.

“UNS has an extraordinary history with the environment,” Prof. Suranto said.

The eco-enzyme liquid that was prepared was produced by lecturers and students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) UNS. A total of 1,000 liters of eco-enzyme liquid were prepared for efforts to purify the lake water. This eco-enzyme is made from fermented vegetable and fruit waste. One of its functions is as a purifier. Besides that, eco-enzymes also function as pest killers, fertilizers, and carbolic acid.
